Excess Saliva?

One of my kids always seems to have excess saliva in his mouth...he's constantly swallowing...we're constantly telling him to swallow...especially when he's talking. Seems like it's always been like that... (??) At least for the past few years (he's 6). I don't know why I keep forgetting to ask the doctor about it when we go in...I should make a list like those organized mom's do and bring it with me to his well-child checkups. Generally I figure it's just one of those things that annoys me but is really no big deal...but every once in a while I wonder if it could mean something. Anyway...anybody have any thoughts?

What can I do next?

My 7 year old is the same way. For years I was looking for answers until one day I took my youngest boy to his ENT appointment. I mentioned that I had concerns about his drooling. She noticed he was a mouth breather. She recommended that we take him to a myofascial therapist. She will help strengthen the muscles around his mouth. She also mentioned that it takes an extra effort for him to swallow his spit. We plan on doing the therapy this summer. He also receives speech therapy because his speech is not as articulate as it should be.
Best of luck!

My mom has that. She had to go to a specialist, they put a little camera down her throat to see what was going on. The muscle flaps don't work as well and can't always regulate the saliva. It's kind of weird, fairly common and is an actual condition, but I don't remember the name. There are some simple treatments you can do at home, including some dietary changes and muscle excersizes. It just depends on if there is an actual increase of saliva, or if his ability to swallow and regulate the flow is difficult, that is the depending factor of what is happening, then they will try and figure out why that happened in the first place. Anyways, don't know if that is what your son has, but it never hurts to ask.

He's most likely getting his 6 year molars in. Teething causes a lot of saliva. Go ahead and get him in to the dentist. They'll likely want to put caps on his teeth when they do come in.
