They have a website for Essure which is very informational I think it even has a video. I am considering this myself just procrastinating going in.
Hello! My husband and I are looking for permanent birth control, and I have been waiting nearly 15 months for him to get it done like he said he would URGGG!! My Dr had recommended Essure to me. I am looking for more information on this product, has anyone had this done? Side effects? Thoughts/Concerns?, Recovery time Etc.

I had the same situation. Finally, I broke down and told him that I completely respect if he's scared and doesn't want to do it. My husband finally smiled and said that he feels stupid but he's just not comfortable with it. Please respect this since I can only imagine how this would hurt your marriage if you "made him". I also looked into the Essure just long enough to know that it's a metal coil that gently scrapes your tubes to then create scar tissue to keep you eggs from moving down for fertilization. This creeps me out, personally so I just went in for a tubal ligation- (somehow it seems more natural-eh :) Good Luck with your decision and please remember how new some of these are so very little is known about the side effects.
i dont have any information on essure but if you are looking for permanent birth control he should get a vasectomy. make the appointment for him and all he has to do is show up. there wont be any side effects unless he doesnt listen to the doctor and trys to do things within the first couple of days.
I had the procedure done when I was living in Canada about 5 years ago. It was a brand new procedure that they were "testing". They had brought physicians from the US to take the local doctors through the procedure as a sort of "hands on training". I think I was the 3rd person to have it done in the city I was living in. Unfortunately, it did not go smoothly for me. The first tube was blocked fine, but when they went to do the second tube they had a hard time inserting the coils. I was under significant pain as they tried to insert the product (almost worse than childbirth). Eventually, they gave up and stated that the tube was curved in such a way that did not allow them to insert the coil properly and since I was encountering alot of pain they decided to not continue.
A month later I ended up have a traditional tubal ligation.
They certainly may have perfected the procedure more than it was in the "early days". But, I would still ask lots of questions to your doctor about side effects, pain control, and situations which may not allow the procedure to work as expected. Become as informed as possible.
I do think that in ideal situations it is an excellent alternative to tubal ligations. Otherwise, I would not have agreed to try it.
Regarding your husband having his procedure done instead...The way my husband and I made the decision of whom should do it is that I asked him if I were to be killed by in an accident and he eventually remarried would he possible want a child with his new wife. He stated possibly. When the same question was posed to me, I stated definitely not. Therefore, I had the procedure done.
Please reply back if you have any other questions.
Best decision I ever made. My friends are probably sick of hearing me talk about it - I'm nearly a poster-child for the procedure! :)
I went to my OB to have it done. They gave me a shot of high-dose ibuprofen, and I sat for an hour while it kicked in. Then we went into the procedure room, and in about 10 minutes the implants were in. It wasn't any more "painful" than a pelvic exan (and I don't have any pain with those), although I could feel her inserting the springs. It didn't *hurt* I was just aware of my fallopian tubes. :) Then I had some minor cramping for a couple of days, kind of like menstrual cramps, and some light spotting the same day, but I went shopping afterwards & back to work the next day... no problems. My OB did have me on hormonal birth control until the hsg showed 100% blockage to ensure there would be a pregnancy though.
Fast forward 3 months to my hsg to determine if my tubes were blocked. It was even less annoying pain-wise than the implantation, and I only took 3 Advil before going in for that procedure. 100% blockage, and I don't have to worry about pregnancy again.
I was 100% sure I was finished having kids, and I have absolutely no regrets. My friends tease me about "womb-ache" when I see babies, but I don't have it. A crazy 5 year old son & a beautiful 11 month old daughter are great birth control, but now I have Essure to back that up. Ha!
Anyway - no recovery time, no pain, no side effects, no hassle. I'm 1 month out from my hsg, and I haven't had any problems. So, I think it's a great choice if you're looking for something permanent, and I'd have to guess that it's way less painful than your husband having a vasectomy.
Good luck, and if you have questions, I'm happy to answer them! :)
J.--make your husband get a vasectomy already! It is so much harder on your body to go through this than his. My husband finally had his done....after some threats and coercion....it is a simple out-patient procedure, and a very quick recovery. He was uncomfortable for about 4 days, and then was back to himself. He hasn't suffered any difficulties or complications, and I am so glad he had it done, rather than me. I had an IUD prior and had really horrible issues with it, and the idea of a permanent implant type situation was terrifying. Good luck....but seriously, you've had two kids...it is his turn now! =)
Simple, in-office procedure. No side effects. Minor discomfort during the procedure and a day or two afterward. Not a big deal at all. Only difference I've noticed is lighter periods -- a good thing! (although I had an IUD before which caused heavy and long periods, so maybe I'm just back to normal now). Highly recommend this procedure. You'll have to use alternate BC for 3 months while scar tissue forms to block your tubes but after that you'll be home free! Good luck on your decision.
Hi, I haven't done the procedure yet but I am in the same boat as you. My husband is not wanting to get the "procedure" done. I am currently on a Mirina IUD and love that but really want something permanant. Anyhooo my doc just recomended the ESSURE AND my good friend just had it done and said that is was painless and works great. Good luck...I think I am going to go for it. Take Care.
Hello-
I had the procedure done several years ago. In and out, serious. It took longer to find a parking spot and walk in then the procedure took. Some pain (very little) but manageable, and then I went back to work- I have a desk job. The follow up procedure to make sure "it worked" was a little more pain but not bad, and again back to work. I have not noticed anything different in my cycle. I recommend it!
