I took something along those lines with my first pregnancy because I got strep throat. My daughter is five, smart, and perfectly healthy. I think it should be fine.
Has anyone taken erythromycin while pregnant? I am 14 weeks pregnant with severe Rosacia. During my first trimester I was not able to use anything, so the Rosacia has gotten pretty severe. Currently I am using two topical medications, which are helping some, but no enough. My dermatologist now wants me to take the erythromycin for a couple of weeks. The thought of taking an oral antibiotic while pregnant is really making me nervous.

Erythromycin is in the safest category as far as pregnancy goes:

Hi S.! When i was pregnant last year in my first trimester, i developed Rosacea. Still have it and probably always will now. Anyway, i went to a dermatologist and she gave me a script for Erythromycin ointment. My ob said it was definitly ok. The oral, i don't know. But i do know the topical stuff is ok. Good luck and congrats!
I would advise checking with your pharmacist or OB/GYN first. Drugs affect the baby differently at certain times/gestation periods.
Have you heard of Arbonne? The Intellegence products may help with that. Not sure if they will but they are awesome skin care. It would be good to go the healthy, botancial way first and not go into the RX. I can send you a sample if you wish.

The best thing to do is to talk to your OBGYN, he will tell you the risk and advice what to do. You will feel more safe this way. Hope your get better. J.
Talk to your oby-gyn before taking any medicine also your pharmacist and assist you. but your doctor should know about this.
Ask your OB AND your pharmacist. I know you can take some antibiotics while pregnant, but I'm not sure which ones you can't. Don't just take it because your dermatologist prescribes it, though. Be extra cautious and just ask.
What is your diet like? You might want to see a practitioner of natural medicine, such as a naturopath, or an acupuncturist, or a chiropractor. In my pregnancies, I suffered from PUPP, which is a condition where you get itchy hives all over your skin. Finally I went to an acupuncturist and she cured it (totally), but I did have to eliminate certain foods from my diet (in order of importance): sugar, dairy, wheat, oranges, shellfish, fermented foods such as soy sauce. I would try this before drugs. Taking antibiotics while pregnant or during labor may be associated with severe constipation or other digestive problems in your newborn (I'm on an email list with other moms whose kids have this problem), because antibiotics kill the good bacteria in your digestive tract, and your baby needs to get those bacteria from you during delivery in order to have healthy digestion.
If you do not want to try an elimination diet, try adding something healthy to your diet: green smoothies (every day if possible, or even twice a day). Fill a blender halfway full of greens (spinach works well), and add three bananas and two cups of water. Blend and drink. For a pina colada flavor, replace one banana with a couple of pineapple rings, and add some unsweetened shredded coconut. It will be shamrock green, but also delicious. This can help with skin conditions because it is so nourishing, that it gives your body nutrients that it may need to heal itself. I find that I'm not vulnerable to viruses and bacteria when I have green smoothies every day -- and those antibiotics your dermatologist wants you to take must be directed at bacteria, right? (Incidentally, my dermatologist wanted me to take antibiotics indefinitely for severe acne -- of which has totally cleared with a nutrition-based approach.)
Finally, if the pregnancy is making you constipated, make solving that problem a priority. Constipation can aggravate skin problems. Though, an elimination diet or adding green smoothies will likely help with that issue too.
Good luck!

P.S. Some topical approaches: you could apply coconut oil, or aloe vera gel, or even honey, which is antibacterial. Good luck!
P.P.S. Also, be sure that you have plenty of healthy fats in your diet (avocado, coconut, organic butter, flaxseed, chia seeds, nuts). You might even want to try an omega-3 supplement (most come from fish oil, so make sure you find one from a manufacturer that tests for mercury first). Omega-3s are great for the skin and are also absolutely essential for developing babies.
Your only pregnant for about 6 more months. The time will fly by and when you hold your baby in your arms, then take the oral medication. It's only my opinion of course, but its a very short time considering your baby's well being is their lifetime.
Consider the topical treatment for the duration. Who knows, once the baby is born it might clear up completely and you won't need anything. Stranger things have happened. Best of luck to you!
Don't do anything before you talk to your OB! And then talk to your pharmacist. I love this website and have gotten great advice and recommendations but most people here aren't MDs and even those who are don't know you personally or your medical history. Please talk to your OB before you make any decisions.

I have heard that some antibiotics are safe but I wuold check with your OB first. I have a couple of lotions from my comapny that are 100% natural and have been proven to work on Rosacia. I would love for you to try those first. Let me know if you are interested. I was one of those women who would not take any medications while pregnant; not even Tylenol. to taderstand our concerns. You can call me at ###-###-#### if you want to talk.

I do not have sever rosacia, but I have it mildly...gets worse in winter, stress, etc. Also I have broken capilarries and really sensitive skin. That being said I have found much releif with Dr. Weils skin care regime at orgins. He makes a mega mushroom line with shitake mushroom complex that is great for reactive/sensitive skin and has some anti-aging benefits, which I don't know if that is an issue for you or not yet in your life, but the fine lines by the corners of my eyes were pretty much gone by the end of a month. I will say it is expensive, I bought a starter kit, that cost me $75, but it lasted me three months and it include the cleanser, the daily protective serum, and mositurizer. Anyhow,my mom said she likes the aveno version just as well, for a third of the price, and she has moderate rosacia. The other thing that is great too is Bio Elements Keraphal Mask once a week. It's very intense, but skin looks great after. An estetician I used to work with (who also used to work with a dermatologist) told me that reactive skin needds to be "exercised" so to speak and that is what Kera Phal does. Both Bio elements and Dr. Weils's are alos all natural and organic if that matters to you or not. Good luck with your pregnancy and hand in there.
Try checking www.safefetus.com The have info on side effects, and drug safety during pregnancy. It is a class B drug, which is basically considered safe for use during pregnancy & breastfeeding. I know it helped me a lot when I was pregnant.
I have a bad reaction to erythromycin. Erythromycin makes me horribly sick (vomiting, nauseous) when NOT pregnant. I refuse to let my doctor presribe it to me. But I know everybody responds to medications differently so maybe it won't affect you badly. But my doctor did tell me that ALOT of people respond badly to it because it messes up the stomach.
I took it for a urinary tract infection. No problems. There is a list of drugs that are OK to take while pregnant. I'm pretty sure no doctor would give you a drug that's not safe.

please make sure what ever medication the other doctor wants you to take - get it approved by your OBGYN! then you will know it will be safe for you and the little one.
I may be too trusting of doctors, but wouldn't a dermatologist know whether a medication she prescribes is safe to use during pregnancy? If anything, I would think she'd want to avoid malpractice suits at all costs. Have you done any research about it on your own? There are certain medications that you can safely take after the risky first semester, so it's possible that this is one of those medications.
S.-I can completely understand your dilemma. I am a naturalist. I have 4 children, one being a newborn. I have been practicing holistics for 7 years. For many conventional doctors they don't try to get to the root of the problem-they try to treat the symptom. Your rosacia is a by-product of toxin build-ups in your body. The toxins are coming out thru your skin. What you can do is add some omega3's and 6's into your diet which should help immensely. You want to do this thru a whole food supplement and unfiltered cold pressed cod liver oil and organic virgin pressed coconut oil. Please go to a health food store (I highly recommend A way of life in Niles off of Milwaukee-see Marlene and she can help you with some other options). Antibiotics only are a short term answer and don't deal with the entire issue at hand and severely compromise your internal body. For topical have you ever tried using organic virgin olive oil or the coconut oil? They have helped some people that I have known. You can also get discount products at www.naturalwebstores.com. Dairy is a huge culprit in this type of skin disorder along with a Vitamin B deficiency being the most common. If you would like further info on this send me a personal message.
Make it a great day!!

Hi S.:
During my pregnancy (at about 20 months) I picked up a severe flu. I was so sick that my OB put me on bedrest for a week and prescribed a Z-Pak (which is an antibiotic) for me, as well as Nyquil for 5 nights. I was a wreck!! He assured me that it wouldn't harm the baby and he was right. My son is nearly his 3rd birthday and was unharmed. I have rosacea (not pregnancy related) and I have tried many topical prescriptions over the years that never really helped. I can recommend some skin products, although I don't know if they'll help since it sounds like its pretty severe right now. In any case they are made by a Canadian chemist and they are called B. Kamins. These products really tame the redness and bumps. www.bkamins.com They have a special rosacea line. Sometimes I can find it on Ebay, but otherwise I buy it at Mario Tricoci. Make sure you wash your face twice a day with a mild cleanser (B.Kamins makes one). Good luck to you!
P.S. I should also mention that your diet will have a major impact on your flair-ups. Stay far away from sugar and spicy foods. Everyone's different, but those items are typically triggers for most people.
The best thing to do is to ask your OB. You can take some antibiotics while pregnant. In fact, I'm 8 weeks today and had to take Zithromax about two weeks ago. Just ask your OB--that's what they're there for!
I agree with Bonnie J. What you eat comes through in your skin as well as your health. There is no such things as a safe drug, sorry, drug is a drug, but a time and place for it. If you have taken a lot of antibiotics in the past you may have a bacterial overgrowth. Have you ever been tested for a bacterial overgrowth? Rosacea has been associated with at least four different types of bacteria:
Helicobacter Pylori
Chlamydophila pneumoniae
Propionibacterium
Bacillus oleronius
If not, get tested, seriously and insist on getting tested.
If you do, you typically feel bloated after eating carbs, fiber, sugar, are constipated or have really loose stools, get migraines, severe acne are just a few signs. You may also have some food allergies or food intolerances that is triggering this. People with bacteria overgrowth need to supplement with B12 because they do not absorp this vitamin anymore (it also helps absorps folic acid) Vit B5 aka pantothenic acid (which supports the adrenal glands-take 500mg daily), a fish oil (to help reduce inflammation and saturates the neurons of the fetus..making for smarter babies!) and probiotic (to help improve the immune system and fight the bad bacteria). Whenever you take an antibiotic it not only kills the bad bacteria, but the good stuff too, when it does it results in overgrowth, showing up in your body as acne, migraines, bloated after eating carbs, sugar, fiber, dandruff, sugar cravings, stinky feet, etc. You should always take a probiotic after taking an antibiotic!!
Good luck and seriously consider changing your diet, your baby will thank you later! If you want more info on supplements and which brands are good quality, feel free to email me. I don't sell them or get kickbacks, just recommend places you can go to get them (like whole foods)
I had pneumonia while I was pregnant, so you can imagine the drugs I took. Just be sure to check with your OB or have your Dr. check with them first for everything.
