I had the ablation done (Novasure method) a little more than a year ago. I had extremely heavy periods too, the kind that put a stop to normal life. There would always be at least 1 day (couldn't predict which one) when I might need to run to the bathroom every 10-20 minutes (and in a good month it was only every hour). I found myself afraid to work or go anywhere, so I finally decided to do something about it.
The procedure was relatively quick and I went home the same day, but the pain for the first day after was excruciating. Still, I'm glad I had it done. My periods since then have been much, much lighter, and different in length and other symptoms than before, and still seem to be changing slightly as time goes by, but very livable. I never achieved "period free" status, but I am so happy with the results.
My doctor said that it was possible that in 5 years or so I may be back to heavy periods again. There's really no telling. But if so, I can make the decision then whether to have the ablation again, or go for a hysterectomy, or just manage until menopause (I'm 39 now).
