Emotions After Surgery

5 days ago I had laparoscopic surgery. I had a 9 cm cyst removed from my right ovary. I did not have any problems with surgery. My right ovary was not removed. In fact I am going back to work in 2 days. But for some reason today, I am a complete emotional basket case. I have been crying off/on all day. My head has been hurting & I've had nausea for 2 days. Has anyone ever been emotional like this after this type of surgery?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your help & concern. This is the third surgery I have experienced in my life. In 1999 c-section with my daughter, 2002 brain surgery to remove a benign tumor, & then this. After having my daughter, my closest realitives were 9 hours away & my husband was clueless. So I did not rest at all. When I had brain surgery, I went to the grocery store 5 days later. I dont sit still. After brain surgery I had to go back to the hospital for a week because of a staff infection.

So this time I actually rested after surgery & my mom came & helped. So I think it was a combination of truely resting, crazy hormones, coming off of pain medication, and my mom going home. I did call my doctor because I couldnt stop crying. She told me to try giving it a few days, because it did sound like a combo of hormones & anesthesia. I also found out I have one of the worst cases of endometriosis, she has ever seen.

But I feel completely different today. More like myself, then I felt in the last week.

A dear friend of mine had her galbladder removed several years ago and had the same type of symptoms. After about a week of the nausea and crying she called her doctor. After talking to him and to a therapist they discovered that she was depressed. This is a rare but very real side effect to general anesthesea. If you aren't feeling better soon, I would research it.

I had laparoscopic surgery 3 weeks ago to remove a 10.5 cm tumor out of my uterus. I too had nothing removed but the tumor. I have a 6 week recovery & the 1st week was HELL. I didn't cry but I was stressed out, mostly because I couldn't care for my 3 little children (5,4, & 2) & lost control of my home. In fact I called a counselor the first week so my husband & I could go together. I knew I was being somewhat unreasonable but needed to go to counseling, it made me feel so much better:) I have never had surgery besides having kids but I had scary thoughts being put under & being in the scary surgery room, so maybe that has something to do with your emotions. Best wishes

A., have you called your surgeon about this? When my husband had post op complications, they first manifested as nausea, pain and a feeling of uneasiness. Your body knows. Call your doctor. I've had laparoscopic surgery and I didn't have any of those symptoms afterward. Hope you feel better soon!

You had general anesthesia. That makes people crazy. I am one of them. You are not feeling well, the anesthesia makes your pain last longer and be more intense. It is normal to feel as you do. Mentally, you also lost something, different people deal with that differently too. Ask for a couple more days, or go back and immerse yourself in your work, whatever works best for you. It takes me much longer to get over things when anesthesia is involved. I'm sorry you are having a hard time.

A.,

Maybe it's from the drug they used to put you out? I think it stays in your system for a long time.

Just a thought.

I hope you feel like your old self again soon.

I currently have a 6cm cyst on my right ovary that is going to be removed in Jan. Every other month, I am a wreck- crying, anxiety, etc, which passes as I start my period. Then I am completely fine for another 2 months. It could be that your cyst was affecting your hormones, and now that it's gone, you are recovering. Some cysts are just hormonally active. If it continues after about 2 weeks, I would follow up with your gyn.

the type of surgery may be less an issue than the fact that you were anesthetized. Anesthesia can have an impact upon our moods. You might want to ask your MD if s/he has any suggestions or ideas

I agree that you should make a call to the doctor or the nurse advice line. If it will help keep your mind focused and occupied, get on back to work. If not, give yourself permission that this might be more invoved than you thought and take some more time off. Be extra nice to yourself and don't feel guilty about being sick. It's ok to take time to get better. Take care and God bless.
