I am looking for some advice on my elbows, they alway look dry and stained a darker color than my arms. I do use a lotion. Nothing seems to help. I am very embarrassed to show my elbows.

try 100% shea butter. You can get it from beauty supply stores (ones that sell hair and skin products for Afro-American women). You don't want the diluted stuff from bath and body works. You need 100%. Rub in you hands until it becomes clear and apply to elbows morning and night.

maybe get a foot exfoliant and use it on your elbows. then use a good moisturizer (not a lotion but a cream)... try aveeno or eucerine.. also a great thing to do to soften the skin is to use aquafor. i use it on my heels (because they are dry and cracked and i want my nice feet back lol). its very greasy though so i use it at night before bed. i hopoe this helps. avoid any moisterizer with a scent.

For my super dry, cracked heels, my dermatologist recommended I try Amlactin. It's a lotion that you can get at any Rite Aid or CVS. No prescription required. My Rite Aid didn't have any in stock, but they ordered it for me with no extra charge.

It moisturizes and exfoliates. I've also been putting it on my elbows & the backs of my arms (that get those little bumps) and both are now very smooth! I put it on before I go to bed and it's been working great.

Good luck!

I would try using a sugar scrub w/oil in it (bath n body/body works) to exfoliate the dead skin then i'd follow that up with palmer's cocoa butter in the jar not the lotion (target/walmart) to help tone the color. Good luck

I use Aquaphor on all the dry spots on my body. It is greasy so be careful to use it before you put on your clothes and allow it time to soak in or put it on before bedtime. Lemons also help lighten skin.

Try exfoliating your elbows when you shower...
then apply a good moisturizer.

Good luck,

Hi L.,

Do you have any health issues that you should talk to your doctor about? Dry scaly skin can stem from simple dermatititis that can be helped with moisturizing lotions that contain retin A, 20% urea, alpha hydroxyacids, and lactic or salicylic acids. It can, however, also be an external symptom of internal metabolic dysfunction. Since you're an older woman, you should ask your doctor for a thyroid evaluation, especially if you have noticed increasing fatigue and deepening voice, unexplained weight gain, and/or increased thickness in your neck. More women suffer from subclinical Hashimoto's thyroiditis than is currently recognized and can be helped with supplemental medication.

Because you describe the skin as being stained darker, your doctor might consider this a possible sign of metabolic disorder (acanthosis nigricans), which includes insulin resistance and can be an indicator or precursor to type II diabetes. Usually this "dirty looking" skin shows up on the back of the neck, under the armpits and the groin, but can appear other places as well. It is also associated with obesity, which can cause or contribute to metabolic disorder. Reducing starches in your diet and eating 1/4 - 1/2 tsp of cinnamon/day (no kidding!) can help reduce insulin resistance, which contributes to the darkening of skin.

Hi L.,

I have a friend that brings a lemon half to work along with a zip lock bag of coarse salt and she puts the salt on top of th lemon half and periodically throughout the day she rubs that on her elbows. She usually starts this routine before she is going to wear something sleeveless to an important event. She says it helps. This also helps make her elbows more smooth/softer.

Ever try A&D ointment? It's as thick and gooey as vaseline but after the skin absorbs it, your skin is very hydrated and soft. I think any pharmacy has it. It's for sure at any kaiser pharmacy. Great for dry feet too!

Sensaria Natural Bodycare is a line of natural-based skin and body care products that have been around since the 1970's. There are several products that we have that should help this and there is a one-year guarantee on them.

I would start off with one of the body scrubs, with Sweet n Smooth being our #1 product. The Sea Silk Mask is great for improving the appearance and texture of the skin and is used mainly for the face but many people have used it on their scars and anywhere else that the skin's appearance is not at it's optimal. For moisturizing, anything in our line would help but I would go towards the luxurious body butters as they don't have any petroleum in them and have wonderful, top of the line shea and cocoa butters and many other botanical ingredients besides coming in seven different scents.

Exfoliate at least three times a week and moisturize daily along with a mask at least weekly.

I give a first time discount also. Another way to try the products is through a spa experience in your home with some of your girlfriends. You may even earn everything you need for free and remember the one-year guarantee, as long as you haven't used more than half of it, otherwise we'll have to order you more:o)

I would see a dermatologist- he or she may be able to prescribe you a lightening cream. Also, if they are more darkly pigmented there may be something going on with your endocrine system. (most likely not but you never know) Good luck!

On one of the Tyra episodes, Tyra said she put a higher sunscreen on the darker areas so that when she was in the sun the skin around them would get darker, essentially blending in the already dark areas.

Hi L.,

I had the same problem even though I exfoliated and moisturized my elbows. One day I used the "Ped Egg" (which I use for my feet) on them. It removed the dry, dead skin. After that I put on a heavy moisturizer and they are 100% better. Good luck!

L.,

I started having that problem and since I started selling Mary Kay there is a product called Satin Hands, which yes is primarly for your hands well it's a 3 step process one is a scrub, the other is a daily lotion, and the other is a night emolient cream... it feels like if you're putting on vaseline but it isn't that... all you need is a nail size application and it feels great and also helps with the dry patches... I get patches on my shoulders when the season changes.

Good luck and let me know if you're interested...
