I have never had such itchy skin before and I dont know what to do. I have tried 4 different lotions and none of them are working. My skin(legs especially) is so itchy I cant stop scratching. I know it is winter and it is very dry in our house but this has never happened before. My husband tells me not to scratch it but when you are so itchy you cant help it. I even wake up in the middle of the night scratching. Anyone have any suggestions on what i can use? Can this be something other than dry skin where I should see a doctor? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for all of your helpful responses. I put a humidifier in my room and have tried a few new products and as they seem to help a little bit, the itching does still get bad at times. I have made a derm. appointment and if that doesnt solve the problem I will go to my regular doctor to get some blood tests done. Thank you to all of you moms once again!!!!!

Yes, go and see a doctor. Such intense itching can be a sign of other problems (liver problems) or a skin problem that can be helped with medication, not just lotion.

I started using skin conditioning oil and hand lotion made by Arbonne and I love it! I love it so much I started selling the products. I have very dry skin in the winter - my knuckles crack and get very sore. I put the skin conditioning oil on at night after I put on the hand lotion and it has rapidly repaired my hands!

Try drinking aloe juice! That helps with everything and id truly God's cure-all medicine! Also apply the gel, let it dry, then Aquafore. It can be pricey but worth it. Are you bathing daily? Don't. And when you do, make it an oatmeal bath with warm, not hot, water. Do not shave your legs, for as long as you can stand it! Go the natural route first before seeing an MD...Our bodies usually take care of and heal themselves if we give them time. Lots of questions for you....good luck!

i have tremendously dry skin, too. i have stopped showering so much, as water is drying, esp if it's hard water. i'm thinking of getting filters for our baths/showers to at least try to get the chlorine out of it. I think that would help us tremendously. anyway, i found great products from Trillium Organics, the Body (Shea) Butter. I love it so much that I'm selling it now out of my home. It's mostly organic and wonderfully simple ingredients. If you're interested, look at in on my website (www.bendickco.com/trillium_organics) or see more product details on Trillium's website: http://www.trilliumorganics.com/Shea.html

I would try using a good exfoliator...a sugar scrub would be very gentle. Do this in the shower. Then, when you get out, just play your body dry and then apply the lotion. This seals in the water, which is the best moisturizer. Do this for several days. If you can, wear something like sweats that will sort of keep your skin moist.

Hope this helps. You might also try putting out bowls of water near your heat registers to get some moisture in the air, too.

Try using baby oil or lotion immediately after your shower. I use a generic from Walgreens called Therapeutic Moisturizing Cream ( white tub w/blue cap). I got it when I was pregnant and my belly was itching like crazy. It is like vaseline, just not as greasy. I also switched soaps for the winter. Get a moisturizing soap--I use Oil of Olay. Normally I use Lever 2000, but I switched for winter and it has helped. Also, do you have humidifiers in your home? This will help and make sure you are drinking lots of water! If nothing helps you may have an allergy that is causing you to itch. Good Luck!

Have you been on any new medications lately? I once thought my dry itchy skin was just a worse case of the dry skin I usually get in the winter, only to find out that I'd developed an allergic reaction to an antibiotic I'd been taking. Otherwise, I would say to keep your showers as short & cool as you can stand them, dry off immediately, slather on the Eucerin immediately afterward & right before bedtime (& when you get dressed, & any other time you think of it), and buy a good humidifier for your bedroom. And maybe sleep with socks on your hands (if you can stand it) so you don't scratch yourself too badly in the night. If that whole regime doesn't work, I would suggest having your dr. refer you to a good dermatologist.

We had a humidifier installed on our furnace when we had to replace it. I have to say I noticed a difference of my winter skin. My legs use to get dry and patchy/white and itched like crazy. I could not go to bed without itching my legs like a madwoman.
A really thick cream lotion helped sometimes, like Eucerin, Keri. I really like the foot and hand lotion from bath and body, the stuff in the blue spa containers. The foot one you could rub on your lower legs. I like the milk bath soap and the cream lotion too that has the flip lid, but those aren't as effective.
You might also try udder balm.
I would probably also try getting a small humidifier that you could put in your bedroom at night, and maybe one in the main area of the house you spend your days in.
I have an older 4 gallon Holmes one if you want it. It worked last time I used it, but for some reason it discolored to yellow. We don't smoke. Or go to target/walmart and look for the $10 humidifier. Sometimes it is with the vapor medicines. It's not as pricey as others if you just want to test it out.
Have you checked your children's back, legs and arms to see if they are also dry?
Good luck.

I experimented an used a moisturizing body was cuz it smelled so good....but I started itching again.

I also took Aveeno oatmeal baths (witch gave temp. relief) and Aveeno lotion I can't remember exactly which one, I think it was oatmeal one or maybe itch relief anyway it was for really dry skin(you can read the labels). This just happened to my sister-in-law. After a few months went to the doctor and she said her skin was so dry from and showering every day was making it worse. The doctor told her to shower every other or third day completely (obviously she could clean herself every day, but not shower her whole body ) A little skeptical she did this and by the second day, she did not itch any more. Her itching was mostly on her back and it was so bad it would keep her up at night. Good luck

I have a couple of suggestions for you I get that way too where I would wake up bleeding because I was scratching so bad I don't have eczema just really dry skin.

My 1st the the Gold Bond Extra Strength lotion its in a green bottle with a red cap very menthol-y smelling.

The other is the Aveeno intense relief hand cream I put it all over.

The last one if you would like to make a trip to the Macy's on State street, in there is a small store called Lush. And they have body butters that come in a bar that you rub all over your still wet skin after your shower and it takes away any itching and dryness. I have one that exfoliates too. I love it. I have one without bits of almonds that I use on my daughter and its very gentle on her skin.

They also have a lotion called Dream Cream that I a lot when my skin is really dry. The Lush products are handmade and vegetarian and some even vegan

I have had this problem for years! I used to scratch so much I would bleed! Yuck. Fortunately, this is an easy problem to fix... you just have to look carefully at labels at the drugstore. Stay away from fragrances. The alcohol in fragrances can dry out your skin. Seems counterintuitive, right? Fragrance free is different than unscented, too. Fragrance free means that there is NO fragrance. Unscented means that the fragrances have been neutralized by something else. Make sure you get a fragrance free lotion. Steer clear of gels, too, as they have alcohol that will also irritate your skin. Dove Sensitive is a good soap to use in the shower. When you're out, pat dry and slather lotion on IMMEDIATELY. My dermatologist told me to get lotion on damp skin within three minutes. I like Aveeno lotion. I have the tan pump bottle with the green letters, and I just got the intense relief hand cream for my hands. I apply the hand cream right before bed, and I've noticed a huge difference. Make sure you reapply lotion whenever you're itchy. It'll help with the itch and it prevents you from scratching like a mad fool. I know, I've been there! Good luck!

I'm 7 months pregnant and living in Chicago - needless to say, it's dry and cold here so we have the heater on (which makes things even drier!). I began with lotion but that didn't help either. What I found to work was to put on some type of body oil (Baby Oil, Massage Oil...etc.) after I shower and before I dry myself. I pat dry after the application and am itch-free for the whole night and whole day!

Do you have a rash or anything on top of the itch, or is it just dry and scaly in places?

I have mild eczema and I use a brand of healing ointment called Aquaphilic. My dad and sister also use this for their eczema. You can order it online or from your local pharmacy. I generally use it about once a week or every other week to keep dry skin related itchiness under control. Another type of healing ointment is Aquaphoric - it is not quite as thick as Aquaphilic, but much more the consistency of Vaseline, so it is more oily. I've used that for moisture rashes on my son and it works great. My sister also uses it on her daughters who suffer dry skin problems due to celiac disease and it works really well for them too.

Another trick is to use baby oil - when you finish your shower, turn off the water, rub on baby oil and then pat yourself dry. My dad also does this and swears by it. I would try it on a small sensitive skin area first though, like stretch marks, just in case. I can't use baby oil anymore since I got pregnant - for some reason, it causes my belly to break out in a rash, but if that doesn't happen to you, then it is a really good remedy for dry, itchy skin.

Good luck!

Poor thing!

Your body probably needs "good oils," water and gentle cleansers.

to work from the inside out, try eating avocados, olive oil, olives, and nuts. And take in lots of water not only from the tap but from fruits and vegetables! Pectin (like from apples) is great for your skin!

To relieve the itch, try using Aveeno products (face and body washes, and lotions) which you can get from Target -- they are very gentle. They even have an itch reducing lotion.

Lastly, it may do you some good to take a steam -- if your gym has one (like Lifetime) take 10 minutes to let your body soak it in and then cover yourself in lotion, Eucerin, Vaseline, or Aquaphor.

Best of luck!!

I know you've gotten tons of responses, but I thought I would give you my remedy since I don't think I've seen it in the responses. First exfoliate in the shower with one of those exfoliating gloves, but be gentle. Then apply AmLactin Lotion. They sell it in the drugstores. I got mine at Costco (I've seen it in the Glenview, IL Costco - I'm sure it's carried elsewhere). Basically you want to apply the lotion when your skin is still a little damp. It's main ingredient is Lactic Acid and believe it or not it helps retain moisture and gets rid of scaly dry skin (that itches like crazy I know!). You have to use it regularly - like every other day or so. It works amazingly well. I hope you try it!

Don't take a super hot shower; try a warm shower and be in there for a short period of time (like 5 minutes, 10 minutes max).

After you are done in the shower, PAT yourself dry. Do not rub yourself with the towel. Rubbing takes away a lot of your body's natural oils which serve as a line of defense against the itching.

Once you've patted yourself dry, slather on lotion. You may even need to reapply before going to bed.

If it still doesn't get better, go see a doctor.

Try to stay away from hot showers and put lotion on as soon as you get out of the shower. You may also want to change your laundry detergent to something that is fragrance free and for sensitive skin. If you are using dryer sheets they are not recommended for people with skin problems. I use the dryer balls to help with static and they seem to work. Taking Benadryl before bed should also help you get through the night. Good luck.

Have you ever heard of Arbonne? It is a swiss health and wellness company and they have some amazing body lotion that also includes anti-aging components which is a plus. It does not contain mineral oil, animal by-products or artificial coloring or fragrances which can sometimes irritate the skin. You never want to use a lotion that contains mineral oil as it is too dense to penetrate the skin and actually forms a barrier so good ingredients can not enter the skin and bacteria and toxins can not leave the skin. Just keep that in mind when purchasing any skin care products such as body lotion or facial products. I would recommend the re9 body lotion but if it is too expensive there is also a baby body lotion that should help. It is formulated for babies as it is very gentle but can also be used for adults. I know several adults who use the baby lotion for their eczema and love it. It really works! I personally love the re9 lotion though. If you are interested I can get you hooked up with a consultant. There is also a 45 day trial period so if you try it and don't see results you can send it back and get reimbursed. Please let me know if you want to try it. If you don't have a medical problem, there are are a few things to try. Go get a humidifier and put it in your bedroom at night. Put pans of water on top of your radiators, the wider the better as surface area is what you're after) and the heat from the radiator will evaporate the water. Get an oatmeal bath. In the skin care section of your pharmacy, Aveeno has an oatmeal bath for itchy skin. Try these and if they don't work, get back to me.

I had a similar itchy issue recently. But I had little bumps- naked to the eye and even my husband could not feel them. But I could because my skin is usually very smooth. I went to an acupuncturist who said the itching had to do with my liver. Ater a couple of acupuncture sessions, it went away.

It could be an allergy. Try using a different laundry soap, bath soap, etc. Even if you've used the same brand or years, you can develop allergies.

Also- to add to Jennier L's response- Lush is awesome. I've used their products for well over 10 years and there is a website http://usa.lush.com/cgi-bin/lushdb/index.html?lang=en_US&...

Been there, done that!

I changed my laudry products first off. That helped quite a bit, Changed body wash to something that isn't a soap, and used a shae butter cream to richly moisturize.

Once you try all those things, then see a DR. I also found a great aloe based shaving cream for my legs that helped a lot also.

I think after so many years we use the same products and develop a sensitivity to them.

Get your thyroid tested. Itching skin with no relief is a common symptom, as well as, fatigue, weight gain, and hair loss, to name a few. I like to use, Cetafil in the shower and the lotion for after and during the day. These were both recommended to me by a dermatologist for our daughter with very red and itchy skin.
Hope this helps.

I know you've gotten ALOT of replies, but i have to chime in and say definately do the humidifier! Also, try some Benadryl along with Eucerin or Aveeno lotion. And, as others have said, a nice Oatmeal bath will help. My 4 year old son just got over a bout of hives, and he was SO itchy...but we did all of the above...and it relieved him tremendously. Also, i had severe itching in my legs as an after effect of an epidural i had giving birth to my now 6 month old, they gave me Benadryl, and it greatly helped. But #1, get a humidifier (Or two!) and keep it going at all times! Good luck...let us know what you tried, and what worked for you!

This may sound strange but I got the idea from one of my patients years ago. I also have itchy skin and opted to try this before going to the doctors. Walmart carries a aloe gel (Ocean Potion instant burn relief ICE) for sunburn pain reliever in it. It's blue. I keep it in the house for burns, ouchies, and my itchy skin. The pain reliever is called Lidocaine. It dulls the itch so it is tolerable and the aloe is great for your skin. I also seen on TV the other day one of the lotion companies has added it to their new lotion. I believe it was called Itchy Skin formula. If you opt to try the lotion please let me know how it works for you. Since I have found something that works so well I really hate to even try something else without PROOF. I think you can understand that one,lol . Happy Not Scratching L..

L.-It sounds like maybe your body went thru a change which is not uncommon. Usually that seriousness of a skin issue is attributed to something in your diet. Any kind of lotion with mineral oil, petroleum or lanolin will only irritate it and those products are very bad for your skin and most over the counter lotions have those or all of them in there products. The best remedy you may already have in your house extra virgin olive oil -organic preferably will help. If you can not do that you need to go to a health food store and get a lotion that is pure. It could also be a reaction to toxins in your body.

You also may want to eliminate completely certain foods from your eating regimen dairy being one of the main culprits. I am not a doctor, however I have been studying the effects of environmental issues on our bodies for a number of years and have much success with helping people with problems such as yours. This can very well be due to the added heat in our houses, low humidity levels, intense cold weather outside and the ingredients in the products you are using. If any of your body products contain alcohol, that is drying and aggravating your skin even more. If the lotions contain mineral oil, that acts as an oclusive and won't let the moisturizing ingredients below the surface of the skin to the epidermis level. Your body wash may contain ingredients that also may be contributing to the problem. You need some good products for washing and moisturing that will get deep into the skin and not wash off. If any of the products that you used contained these ingredients, that is why they are not working for you. I use a Swiss skincare line that are only pure, safe and botanically based products which are second to none. I would be more than happy to share them with you or other posters who have any type of skin condition. They can be purchased online and shipped to your home in 2-3 days! You don't have to suffer. Just educate yourself on the type of products that you are using. Truly, they are not made the same and the Europeans have much higher standards for personal care products than we do in the US (sad, but true). Here's to your health and itchies!

I know you ahve already had a lot of advice but a friend of mine was just saying the exact same things. She used the body serum adn body lotion from Arbonne and her legs felt better within a couple of days. If you would like to try a free sample let me know. Many of the lotions on the market contain animal by products that can irritate skin or mineral oil which acts as a seal over your skin preventing it from breathing as well as preventing other important botanical ingredients from absorbing into the skin. I'm not sure of all the products taht you have tried or if you have found relief but if not let me know and I will run a free sample over for you to try.

Hi L.,

Try running your clothes through the rinse cycle twice when doing laundry. I use to have the worst time with dry itchy skin during winter, but one year a pediatrician suggested running clothes through an extra rinse when doing laundry. Apparently, the extra rinse gets rid of any leftover detergent residue. Amazingly mine and my children’s dry irritable skin problems went away.

Also, taking warm to cool showers is good. And, I love Dove’s Gentle Exfoliating Body Wash. I use it everyday. It’s not harsh, leaves my skin smooth and soft, and it’s not too expensive.

Hope this helps!

I have exczema as well - sounds like that is what you have. I have to have Eucerin, Aquaphor, or the blue and beige Aveeno lotion. Also - what worked the BEST was Walgreen's generic version of Eucerin with the royal blue lid - I would apply RIGHT after a shower and it was the only time my legs did not bleed from my scratching all winter.

I will add that one Dr. I worked for informed me that I had to stop taking hot baths - one of my greatest JOYS in the winter. I just can't give them up, but if I did I think it would help alot!

This happened to me too, after never having a problem. I would scratch so hard, I would bleed! Crazy. I actually went to a dermatologist and got steroid cream which fixed it. Now when the dryness starts to creep up, I use Cetaphil Cream (not lotion) and it is great. I use it on my kids also. I would try the Cetaphil cream for a couple weeks (3 times per day) and see if that helps. If not, head to the doctor. I'm completely fine now.

You need to also look at it from a HYDRATION stand point. You didn't mention whether you drank water or not. You should be getting AT LEAST HALF YOUR BODY WEIGHT IN OUNCES DAILY!! If you exercise......even MORE!

Are you getting enough OMEGAS?? That ALSO plays a part in the health of the skin.

Have you considered an allergy? Laundry soap? Bath gel? Certain foods? There are ways to determine if it is in fact, an allergy.

PURE ALOE GEL is about the WONDERFUL for your skin. VERY HYDRATING. You also might try UDDER CREAM or AQUAPHOR. Aquaphor is uses many times for wheelchair bound patients for bed sores. Bed sores are LARGELY due to dehydration. It only takes 3% water loss to be dehydrated. If you're thirsty....you're already dehydrated!!

It's amazing what hydration can do for the body....organs, energy, skin, etc.

I deal with eczema on a regular basis and go through exactly what you are describing! It's terrible! In fact just last night I woke up scratching my leg. I mean...I was scratching my leg in MY SLEEP and woke up WHILE I was doing it. A good quick cure is Cortizone cream or ointment. You can pick it up at any drugstore or grocery store. Most likely you have started eating more of something or a new product has caused this itchy skin. Mine kicks up if I eat too much sugar or dairy. It could also be caused by a new detergent or fabric softener. Perhaps a new perfume?

Oh, I also use Avenno bath and shower oil. After you're done in the shower, put it on and then wash it off. (Warm showers instead of hot showers help to not dry out your skin.) It keeps the moisture in and you can still use lotion after that. Just make sure your lotion is unscented as to not aggrevate the problem. :o)

Hope this helps!

Wow I am not the only one out there, my skin itches like crazy in the winter, its the dry air. It could also be stress, and poor diet, right now on top on itchy skin I have scalp dermatitis which is dry ithcy scalp too. ugh.. I was interested to read the post about diet sodas, thats what I have drank for years I just got used to them from doing Weight Watcher way back so I think I'm gonna bite the extra syrupy taste bullet and switch and see how that works out. Anyways after seeing the over commercialized Eucerin calming cream I went out and bought some, it doesn't work. I actually itch mostly on my neck and chest, I think its stress nerves and anxiety although every time I try to tell the doctor hey I itch and break out in hives from itching they say just keep applying the 2.5% hydracortizone which is temp relief and only avail by precription. It wasn't until I asked my dermatologist that they said to use Allegra for allerigies, its the Histamine casusing your skin to itch and Allegra has the blocker for that. So I got a prescription from that and it works wonders as long as its taken. As far as my legs I do take hot baths, they do get dry and itchy but I dont itch till I bleed so I guess thats just something I can deal with till winter is over.

It sounds more like an allergic reaction that a skin condition. Have you tried taking Benadryl? Have you used a new laundry detergent (clothes, sheets against your skin)...

Have you taken any new medications or over-the-counter stuff? If four different lotions arent curing the problem its probably time to seek the advice of a medical practitioner.

Some times drug reactions can take a bit to happen as the substance can take time to build up in your system and than you start itching like crazy!

It may be eczema (sp?). I have super dry, itchy skin in the winter too. I use Oil of Olay Quench. It's the only lotion that seems to work all day long. Also, try taking lukewarm showers instead of hot ones and apply lotion immediately after getting out of the shower. If none of that helps to relieve your itching, go see your doc.
