Ducks in the Tub

My daughter has a collection of ducks for the bath, and they all seem to be collecting mold on the inside. Any advice on how to clean them? I was thinking just to place them in a bucket of bleach for a few days, but don't want to do anything that could be unsafe to her.

What can I do next?

I clean them with bleach (not when baby is around) and then rinse well with warm/hot water. let dry and they're as good as new and you little one won't be harmed by fumes of the bleach.

N.,

Put it bleach + water solution for a couple of hours. Rinse well. Then just throw them in the dishwasher for a wash cycle. That will rinse them out further and clean them very well. If there isn't a lot of mold, just put them in the dishwasher and if you have a cycle where there is a hi-temp rinse then use that. Thats what I do with my kids tub toys.

Good luck.

Don't think the ducks need to be in the buckets for days - maybe just an hour or two with maybe a small brush you can get the remainder of the mold. You can always throw that type of toy into the washing machine and let them air dry in the future!
Love those ducks !

I found that they didn't do that as much if I just made sure that all the water was out of them when the bath was done. Good luck!

They have a tendancy to do that. Just throw them out. Get her something else...hopefully ones that don't have wholes in the bottom. If they do, make sure you squeese them out all the way so that no water collects. Or, what I did, was cut a small slit on the bottom where the whole is. Sure the ducks don't squeek but they are more easily washed and mold free.

10% bleach in water (1 cup bleach, 9 cups water) is more effective than straight bleach for disinfecting. just make sure you give the toys a very thorough rinse afterwards. like another mom mentioned, the dishwasher afterwards would be great.

I would just toss them and buy new ones without holes on the bottom. We had the same problem and you don't want your daughter putting them in her mouth with mold on them. Even if you don't see mold on the exterior of the toys, it doesn't mean there aren't mold spores on them. There are several tub toys on the market without holes in them.

Don't bother with the bleach - toss them. Bleach has been shown to cause breast cancer...scary stuff!

Hi N.,

Please whatever you do, DO NOT USE Bleach or a Bleach and water combination. Bleach is dangerous all people, however, babies and young children are much more susceptable because their respiration rates are 3x that of adults.

Bleach (Liquid)
Danger! Causes severe eye injuries. Can burn the skin, mouth, throat, and stomach. Vapors irritate the nose, throat, and lungs.

Chlorine’s by products are organochlorines and dioxin – dangerous to health and the environment. Dioxin is 300,000 times a more potent carcinogen than DDT. It bio-accumulates in the body – we cannot detoxify it. Vapors have been shown to interfere with brain function. Vapors have been shown to aggravate heart conditions and asthma. Suspected to affect the reproductive system.

Once I became educated on the dangers in household products, I made it my mission to inform others. Major manufacturers are misleading the public and using their deep pockets to lobby congress, so they can keep us in the dark. Canadians are much more aware and have been able to air information about the dangers. Here is a CBC, (Canadian Broadcasting Company News Clip:

I purchase environmentally safe products, (they work better and cost less than name brands), from a co-op shopping club. I would be happy to pass along the information to you.
