my husband is FINALLY buying me a DSLR camera! yay! ...except when I went to go choose one I couldn't. there are soooooo many and the reviews are all the same. Now I don't plan on taking pictures as a business or anything. I just want beautiful pictures so I no lnger have to take my kids to the studio and pay a ton of money. I'm looking at nikons and canons. so if any of you ladies can recommend a few cameras I would be so grateful! :)

I have taken a few photography classes in highcschool and my sister is a photographer so I know my way around the camera pretty well. I plan on buying a book and reading the manual I just want to know which camera is going to last me a long time and takes great photos. thanks in advance :)

budget: no more than $1000 :) right now I'm looking at the Nikon D5100

What can I do next?

I have a Cannon T3i And i LOVE it.

It takes great pictures and with the 55-250 lens I can take clear shots of the moon.
This is the camera I decided on after months of research and review reading
Here's a site I used. You can see sample pictures from the cameras

I chose the T3i over the Nikon because I could get more for my money. I got the T3i with 18-55mm lens , 55-250mm lens , SD card and very nice sling carry bag for under $1000.

I have the D5000 and I love it. I love being able to take rapid pictures since I'm not very good at capturing a moment, so the rapid fire lets me catch the moment. We go the 18-55 mm lens and the telescopic lens that 55-200. After getting it, we ran into someone that had an 18-200 lens and I wish we got the all in one lens. I'm still learning, but I didn't read the manual. My husband and I have taken some wonderful pictures, some do look professional, and I haven't gone back to a photo studio since, and I don't plan on it. We got the 5000 as opposed to the 3000 because the 5000 takes video and I think has more megapixels than the 3000. We also got it at Best Buy on our credit card for no interest for 18 months. We go it around memorial day and got a sale which included the camera, both lens and a bag. We also got the large memory card. For all of this we paid around $850. As for the memory card, we have gotten upto 1500 pictures on the card and were still not given any warning that we were out of memory. Also, the battery life is awesome. We took it to Austria took pictures every day and still didn't need to charge the battery.

Ritz offers free classes with a camera purchase there. I just bought my small point and shoot there (to take to amusement parks when the big camera is too big to cart around). The teacher told us that all the base cameras are similar in what they are able to do now. What you want to do is price the accessories (lenses) because each is specific to the brand you buy. I ended up with a Canon because of the price and love my camera but my best friend went with the Nikon and she loves hers too. I would get the best base camera you can afford and then get the most versatile lens you can afford. Take some basic classes and go have fun. Don't over think this or it will drive you nuts.
