Donating/Selling Books

I have a ton of books that I was going to bring to Half Priced Books. After thinking about it, schlepping all those books to get barely any cash back, it might not be worth it to wait for them to offer me $1.00 for 50 books.
Does anyone know of a good charity that NEEDS books? My books range from old psychology textbooks, to biographies, to just plain fun books.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you! I think I will do a mix of Book Crossing and Better World Books. My husband wanted to trash all of them! So I needed quick action. I would love to see my books being read by people all over.

Another Option - go on www.bookcrossing.com and register them with a number, leave them in odd places (bathrooms, shopping carts, benches at malls, etc...and see where they end up). Totally free website where you make the world your library. I LOVE the website.

You can see anytime anyone registers finding them on the website, see what they think of the book, and see when they release it and where if they journal it...they end up all over the world. I have books all over South America, Central America, Europe and the USA. You can also trade, swap and follow them on their journeys. It is a blast!!!

It is fun to leave them places...and even more fun when you get local alerts telling you that someone dropped one of...you can "hunt" for it.

All free and you will never be spammed or anything.

Your local library probably takes donations. On of our city libraries is the drop-off point for all of the libraries. There is then a book sale that benefits the libraries.

I always have an easier time donating beloved but unneeded books to the library - because I KNOW the folks that come to the library book sales love books!

You can donate or sell through Better World Books http://www.betterworldbooks.com/ They are making a global impact on literacy, while keeping 53 million pounds of books out of landfills. It is a very worthwhile place for your books! Info here: http://www.betterworldbooks.com/info.aspx You might even be able to find a donation box in your area where you an drop them off.

When I read the title I immediately thought "better world books!"

But Rachel beat me to it! So I second that motion. Your books will be greatly appreciated and going to a great cause.

I definately found it not worth it to sell them to half price books.

Call your library (ours takes donated books and resells them). Call Goodwill or ARC (most of the books in my home library come from those two places). I love Half Price book stores, but I know they don't pay much at all.

Call the local public library. They will accept your donations and give you a receipt for your taxes!
