Dogs Peeing on the Floor!

I have two dogs that are about a year old and have been housebroken for months now. All of a sudden they no longer use their pet bells to be let outside and are more than happy to just spuat on the floor! I can't figure it out, we've never ignored them when they need out, we don't leave them outside for long and they have a water dish, there hasn't been another dog over to leave a smell, and the only thing I can think of is that I've been watching a friends baby that likes to crawl around. I can't steam clean ever spot every time anymore, it's exhausting. Why would this happen and how do I stop it?

What can I do next?

Sounds like they are marking. Has nothing to do with whether or not they are housebroken. If you have a new baby crawling around and that's where they're marking that's definitely it. They're putting their scent there to establish their dominance. Keep them gated out of that area and it should help. Dogs see children/babies as threats sometimes and if they fear losing their spot in the pack hierarchy they will do things to show their dominance, like marking.

Jealous of the baby? My inlaws dog is 7 and only has "accidents" in the house when grandkids are there. I swear he's acting out because of the competition. I'd try and take them out at set times. I stay home and take my dogs out every 2-3 hrs.

Is their favorite spot on carpeting? You may want to get some Nature's Miracle (at a pet supply store). You need to soak the area not only all the way through the carpeting but also all the way through the pad.

Call your vet - a checkup may be in order.

If they're healthy, then you may want to do some re-training. Go outside with them, give them the command, and praise them all to pieces when they answer the call of nature in the right place. A reward may be helpful. Keep reinforcing until they do it again on their own.

Oh - I just noticed where you live. Could it be that your dogs feel it's too HOT outside now?

You should find a way to lock them out of the area they have peed in and make them form a new habit of going where you want them to go, such as outside. Give them shade and water, and even a small swimming pool to keep cool, and a fenced in area they can potty in. They will form the new habit and then not go in the house anymore. But yup, youll have to get that flooring cleaned so they dont smell it again. We had to do this with our dads 2 dogs who where pooping on his carpet while he was gone all day. We gated them out of everything but the lanudry room and they had a doggy door to the outside. It took about 3 weeks and they stopped messing in the house by the time we let them back in.

Just to be on the safe side, I would say to get the dogs checked by a vet. One dog might have a UTI and the other might think, "Well Misty is peeing in the house so its okay" (Yes we have one dog, whom I love, but she is a few bricks shy of a load, and when our one dog has accidents, she dogs too. No kidding).

We use Odo Ban (I've gotten it at Costco before, but 1 gal lasts a long time, so you might have to search for it online). If it's carpet, you'll have to steam clean it, or pull up the rug and throw it out (if that's possible).

I agree with the others that say to crate them or confine them in a very small area on either linoleum, tile or laminate floor (easy clean up), and start them back at Potty Training 101. If you don't have the time to devote to it, then put them outside during the day (make sure they have shade and water, and do expect that they may dig out of boredom), and crated at night or when you can't be with them.

Maybe one has a urinary tract infection and had an accident or two, and then the other wanted to mark the spot with its own scent....creating a back and forth pee all over the house mess.

Call the vet.

You have got to get the smell out of the carpet or it will continue to be a vicious cycle. We had to replace our carpet at our old house, bc the previous owners had a dog and our two dogs had a ball remarking everything. :(

You MUST get the scent OUT of the carpet or they will continue to use the carpet as a potty ... you need to go back to potty training mode and include puppy pads if needed. OH and are they fixed? That may play a role.

That is curious. I would ask about taking your pooch into the vet to test for urinary infections, but if it is TWO dogs suddenly doing this, the odds are against medical and in favor of environmental causes... so yes, the crawling baby. Are they peeing where the baby has been crawling specifically? If so, I'd say they are trying to assert dominance over the baby and "mark their territory" by peeing where the baby has "dared to tread".

What happens on the weekends when baby hasn't been around?
