Hi, I have a major problem with where I live. Back in May, my husband and I moved into these apartments that were close to my parents and in a very good area, so it seemed like a good decision. Well, now we find on average 4 cockroaches and sometimes a few crickets a day. It has gotten so bad, to the point that I even found one floating in the bathtub while giving my 6-month old son a bath. Needless to say, I freaked out! We're not dirty people at all and keep our apartment very clean. I'm at my witts end! I can't stand living here, especially with a baby...It feels like we're sharing an apartment with hundreds of cockroaches! Does anybody have any advice on what I can legally do? We've talked to the office at our apartments about this problem, and all they do is have their guys come spray (which obviously hasn't helped). Now they said they're going to have pest control come (but it's been 2 weeks, and no one has showed up). What can I do? Can I report them to somebody, or threaten them to let us out of our lease? We can't afford to pay almost $2,000 to break our contract. If anyone has any advice at all, I would appreciate it SO much! Thanks, and have a great day.

A lot of apartments communities they have the same problems with roaches, crickets and a lot of ANTS, unfortunately we live in the deset where we are surround it by different kinds of bugs and insects. I live in a house, but when we purchase the house we used to have a lot of bugs, Pest control can help (pest control goes to the communities ones at week, so call the office every week to put your name and apt.# on their weekly pest control log so pest control can go to your apartment every week for at least one month so probably you can resolve the problem),also I notice in the past that roaches travel thru the water pipes in bathrooms turbs/showers,sink and also in the kitchen sinks.
so try to buy something to put in the sinks and tubs so you can stop them to come in.
Unfortunately you can do much if you try to break your lease, since your have a lease contract they expect you to pay to break the lease if you decide to move out, then if you moved out and break your lease they send you to collections and anyway you end up paying them even more.
the floating, sorry to hear that too, they will send their maintanance people to try to fix it... good luck!
Chelsev, they will try to work out something with you even they will even suggest to move to another apartment if they can not resolve the problem, the only thing that I can tell you is stay were you are, try to speak to the manager try to keep a record of all the request, times, dates and if they not resolve to the problem, find out which management company they are under and probably you can talk to the property manager, manager.

I grew up in New York and lived in apartments my whole life and have dealt with the similar situation. My recommendations are as follows:
1.) take pictures of the roaches
2.) Keep a log of when you have seen them, how many and when you spoke to the apartment management and how they responded.
3.) Put your request to the office management in writing and keep a copy for your records.
4.) After you have done all this and they still have not gotten rid of the situation, then contact The Housing Authority to file a complaint. (I am not sure where you live but if you are in the City of Las Vegas then the number to call is ###-###-####.

The roaches are comming from the drains in the bath tup and sinks in the house just keep them pluged and you should be fine. I have the same problem and I find baby ones all the time in the house. It does'nt bother me now because I know everyone has the problem. you'll never really get the to stop comming but you can eliminate the way they come in by investing in raid spray. I keep at least 2 cans in my house at all times. the one with the freash scent and no scent work the best and you can use them inside and out. spray the door ways and all along the walls where the rug meets it. you could also ahve broken cement below your carpets from the ground settling that invites all sorts of bugs in. I know mine is and my apt is only 2.5 years old. I'm the second tennent and the apt was empty for about a month or 2 before I moved in. when I first got here. in the first 2 weeks I had an infestation in the corner of my livingroom. I remember I killed at least 25 roaches in 2 days. but the sprayers dont work. raid really does. just make sure you spray it yorself every week untill you stop seeing them and then every month after that. make sure the drains are plugged also at all times when there not being used. and spray the windows too.
Sounds like you have got some solid advice so far - I have also had a plummer tell me to pour bleach down my drains once a week minimum. Something to do with the pests and the bacteria...not sure why.
Also, put your request for pest control in writing to your landlord. If they do not respond you then have back up for your records. Request a professional to come out and give you a quote and inspection - a true professional will look for a faulty flooring, infestation on the walls etc. They may need to move you if you are infested.
