My son and DIL gave their daughter a "kid's camera" and there were definite problems with it - both with the camera and with the computer part (I think it tried to override some of the other computer programs). So when they gave up on that, they gave her an inexpensive regular camera. She takes care of it, and it works so much better. The previous advice is good - if you can find an older model that is waterproof, all the better.

When my son was 3ish I got him a Nikon CoolPix camera and couldn't be happier with the choice. It takes great pictures, and has survived 5 years of kid handling perfectly.

Got it during Amazon's crazy black friday deals for about 50 bucks and free shipping (as opposed to the typical $200-$250 price tag).

We finally gave our three year old our first digital camera because he LOVES taking pictures. That way, if he tosses it around, no harm. But he doesn't, because he really enjoys seeing what he framed up in the photo.

I can tell you DO NOT get the Fisher Price kid tough one. We got it for my daughter when she was 4 years old and the picture quality is HORRIBLE. Most of the pictures she took we have no idea what they are. Plus the batteries were ridiculous. We had to change them almost every time she used the camera.
I agree with the other posters. Get her a regular point and shoot. My kid (now 5) uses mine constantly and she takes great pictures. She is very careful with it and even knows the different settings, and how to change picture size and everything.

I bought my daughter a vtech and was very unhappy about it. Don't waste your money. Awful pictures (though there are some fun features - still not worth it). This holiday season we are giving her an adult camera - last year's model on super sale. I am also getting a neck strap for the camera instead of using the regular wrist strap (in addition to a well padded camera case). This way, if it accidentally slips out of her hand it will not fall and break.

Good luck.

If you want one that takes good pictures you need to purchase a regular camera. Look around and see if you can find an olympus (maybe a slightly older model on ebay or amazon) some of them are shock and water proof.

I purchased a FP camera and it takes very small images. I really thing that is the problem is that the image size is so small. If you dare try to enlarge it it is going to fall apart.

With a childs camera, there is no need to be careful as they are rubber. If she is ready and already taking pics with your camera, I would just buy her a cheap camera with good reviews.

We were also very unhappy with the kids' cameras, so on our son's 6th birthday last March we bought him the Kodak Easy Share camera. It is easy for him to use and takes good pictures. He loves it, and uses it all the time. They have it at Target, and it's not too pricey. I hope she has a happy birthday!

I would say just buy her a regular point and shoot digital that doesn't cost too much. Children's cameras are notorious for poor picture quality.
We gave our 4 year old one of our old ones and it is great. I love the pictures she takes!
