People with carpet...tell me if this is normal or not: We have 5 bedrooms with carpet, a long hall and stairs. The rest of the house is all tile and wood. The carpet cleaners were her for less than 45 minutes. There was 2 of them. Doesn't seem like they did a good job. I called the owner and he said they have very good machines and they should have showed me how dirty the water was when they were done. I told him I'm sure the water was dirty but I felt like it was a quick job and they didn't actually "clean" the carpet but just quickly went over it once. He offered to come back and do it again for no charge but I wanted to check to see if everyone else is only 45 minutes. If so, then I won't have him come again. So please let me know. Thanks friends.
***This house is a rental and my prior houses all had tile, no carpet at all...so I've never had to use professional carpet cleaners before now so I don't know what's "normal" and what isn't. The carpet is chocolate brown so it's hard to tell but doesn't "feel" clean or look clean like you see in the ads with 'before and after' pics.
We paid $204 and change. Not sure that was a deal or not. lol We used someone in my husband's networking group so we thought not only would they give a discount, but would do a great job since the point in networking is to get business from each other. Guess that won't be happening now for them.
The house is very large, with another bedroom but it has tile. The bedrooms are all big, only one being on the small size and even it isn't really small. So it looks like I will be having them come back to do it over for no charge. Thanks friends!
ETA: Lilym, I didn't go upstairs because they said to not walk on it for 4-6 hours and I have bad knees. So I didn't see it until I went up to go to bed.
They didn't move any furniture at all. I had everything off the floor. But they are large rooms so there was a lot of carpet. They are coming back next week. Thanks for the info, it helped me decide they did a crappy job and I won't use them again after this.
I think that is too fast, too. We used a professional cleaner for just one room, and it took about 25 min or so just for that one room (it is a standard size of like 12 x 16 and square - no nooks or crannies).
If you aren't happy, I would take them up on their offer and have it redone and maybe tip the guys who redo it for their trouble . . . that way everyone is happy :) I hate paying for stuff and not getting my money's worth.

Yes, 45 minutes is not enough time for 5 bedrooms, a long hallway and stairs. My stairs alone took 25 minutes. (I was curious and timed it).
I would get a redo because that is not long enough to do a thorough job.
I used Stanley Steemer in early May for my bedroom, living room and stairs. They were here much longer than 45 minutes.
We used to do it ourselves with a Bissel Pro Heat for years. Hubby did it and it worked well but after the last machine wore out, we just went with the professional cleaners.

That sounds really fast. Obviously only one person was operating the cleaning machine so the other was, perhaps, moving furniture and putting those little pieces of cardboard underneath the legs to keep the furniture caps from rusting onto the wet carpet or leaving an imprint. I doubt 2 people could vacuum in 5 rooms, a hall, and stairs in 45 minutes, let alone move furniture, deal with dirty water, and everything else. Have them come back and ask the supervisor to come by.
Ads are notoriously enhanced to show the dramatic change, and chocolate brown carpet may be tough for a radical color change (you see beige or light gray carpet in the ads, right?). Still, if you're not satisfied, have them come back. And 45 minutes is kind of ridiculous, in my opinion.
I used a cheap one that had a deal and it was quick like that. It didn't seem to make much difference. Decided next time to get recommendations and went with a more expensive, owner-operated place. He's here a couple hours when we have them done and we can see a difference when the carpets dry. You really get what you pay for with carpet cleaning.
If it doesn't look or feel clean, it's probably not clean. Every time I have had my carpets cleaned it has taken about 1.5 to 2 hours. Have them come back.
I only have two rooms that have carpeting and they get cleaned. The people that come clean them are usually here for almost 2 hours.
Ours is beige (urgh) and I truly hate it. Wish we would have put the hardwoods down when we had the chance in January....any way - ours you can SEE the difference. And smell the difference.
I think there are different kinds of carpet cleaning. The steam kind (which we had done at our old place) was the deep clean kind. And they worked at stains and high traffic areas, like our stair case. So I'm pretty sure it took longer than 45 minutes. I feel like we booked off a morning.
I think there's something called dry cleaning (?) which doesn't use as much water and doesn't do as deep clean a job.
Do you know which type you had done?
We had a room with dark rose carpet in it at our old house. I can't say that it looked much better after we had it cleaned - I think I was hoping for a miracle. But it did feel springy and clean underfoot and just looked newer if that makes sense. They were able to get stains out completely too. For me, the big thing was it looked clean and smelled fresh. Then a toddler blew through his diaper with diarrhea and we ended up tearing the carpet out about a month later ... it was a sign to us to finally get rid of that deep rose.
Wow, it takes me 30 minutes to vacuum the area rug in my living room once a week. Granted, I only do it weekly (I'm out of town for school & husband has reaction to the dust vacuum kicks up), and we have 4 dogs that contribute fur on a daily basis, but the rug is only 9' x 12'. I can't imagine 45 minutes to thoroughly shampoo 5 bedrooms, hall & stairs!! Definitely have them come back. Maybe carpet will be cream after a 2nd wash, haha! T. :)
my dad has a bissel carpet cleaner. it connects to the tap so the waters always hot. it takes him about 30 minutes for a 13x13 ft room. and carpets always look cleaner when hes done.

We use a steam clean company that runs in long hoses from the truck that they park outside. The carpets look and smell clean when they are done (we have light color in the front rooms) but I never see the water. They also move the furniture unless instructed to leave it. It takes about 45 minutes just to clean the living room.
I don't know that I'd bother having these cleaners back. I'd want a refund, then call a proper cleaning company. If they do come back, ask that the owner come in person to handle it and you should also be home to supervise.
It takes me about an hour to do a 12'X12' empty room. BUT I am constantly having to go and dump the dirty water and refill the reservoir with hot soapy water. One cleaner I used had a truck and hoses came from the tank on the back. It was the cleaning fluid/soapy water. He had a vacuum like deal on the inside end of the hose and his action was much like running a vacuum but he was cleaning the carpet as he went. The dirty water went back up one of the hoses into a tank under the truck bed.
So, did they have hoses that came into the house from a main truck with tanks on it? Did they bring in big carpet cleaning machines?
If they actually had to dump water and refill machines and they didn't do a single machine to a single room, meaning that one person cleaned each room with one machine, then I'd say they didn't do a good job.
Are you sure they didn't just do a main room and hallway? That's about how long it takes me to do those rooms IF I don't move the furniture to clean.
just wondering, did they even have time to wet all the carpeting? could you tell that the edges were dry but the middle of the room was wet? even not moving furniture and just doing high traffic areas, 45 seems way to quick. I love the idea of asking the owner or supervisor to attend if you use them again.
That seems way too quick. I can barely vacuum in that amount of time. We had carpets cleaned in a townhouse we rented that had 3 bedrooms, a living room, and 2 sets of stairs. It took them about 2 1/2 hours. Afterward it looked way better than when we moved in! I'd call the manager back and see if they'll come back out.
Did you go with the cheapest quote? Usually you get what you pay for. 45 minutes sounds pretty fast and not very thorough for that many rooms. The guy I've been using lately for my place is about 25% more expensive than most of the others around here but he takes his time and also makes sure to not leave the carpet sopping wet (which can attract more dirt and it smells bad when it's too wet.) Last time he was here for a little over an hour, did the living room, short hall and two bedrooms, it was $160 and well worth it.
I can't imagine doing it in 45 min. I have a cleaner. Granted it's not a big commercial one, but it would take me almost that long to do 1 room thoroughly.
