I just include my MIL in with Mother's day. She's a mom and a grandmom. I do the same on Father's Day with my FIL. So we don't celebrate grandparents day, but definately recognize them. =)
Just curious how many of you celebrate grandparents day. There seems to be a lot of people on here saying mothers day is all about them & not our mothers/MIL's and that's why we have Grandparents day, to celebrate them. So, for those of you who actually feel this way, do you really celebrate Grandparents day? I can't even tell you when it is!!
I just include my MIL in with Mother's day. She's a mom and a grandmom. I do the same on Father's Day with my FIL. So we don't celebrate grandparents day, but definately recognize them. =)
Every family has different dynamics and traditions, but for me, I don't even know when grandparents' day is, and since I have no living grandparents, I guess I don't need to know. If my granny were still alive, I expect I'd want to enjoy the day with her, but for me it wouldn't be a "special" effort, because I always enjoyed spending time with her and doing little things for her when she needed help.
As a granny, all I can really say is that I celebrate every day I get to visit my grandson, which has been a delightful Friday almost every week for the 5+ years since his birth. I don't expect, need, or want cards or gifts. Gestures are nice, I suppose, but for me, at least, don't come close to the actual love and appreciation that my daughter, son-in-law, and grandson give me. I feel so lucky!
We do. I think it's in September.
I send homemade cards (with either a handprint, or this year my son knows how to write his name all by himself so he will do that, and a new photo, usually just snapshots, of the kids) from the kids to my mom, grandpas, and my mil. I phone my grandpas, skype with my mom and mil. That's all. Everyone lives soooooo far away.
All grandmothers have passed away in our family (except my mom and mil-the boys' great grandmothers who they really never see except by skype), but we send cards and gifts on mothers day as well....because they are OUR moms!
Yes I do. Our local newspaper has it where you can put a ad in for Grandparents day. I did that plus got them a card and a small gift. My parents do alot for my daughter and what better way to say thank you then to recognize it on grandparents day? I do get my husbands parents a card also but they are not in her life as much as my parents are. And my daughter just loves my parents to death. My MIL has alzheimers so she tends to forget that she has grandchildren. Or one day she remembers the next she only remembers 1 or 2 and as of right now she has 3 (4 come this Oct). So it is pretty hard for my daughter to understand (she is 3).
So it's nice to have a seperate day just for the grandparents.
I DO! I love it because it reminds me of when I was little and ues to celebrate in school by having are grandparents come to class. and when I was in first grade I remember my grandma on my dad's side coming to recess with me and playing ball with me even though she was very sick with pancreatic cancer, she died several months latter. I get my mom a gift and my grandmother a gift from my son on both mothers dad and grandparents day (usually something small like a card and and candy for grandparents day)
We celebrate grandparents day. We celebrate our Mom and MIL for mother's day from just my husband and I, since they are our moms. But, our kiddos make them things for grandparents day. It is in September.
I sent the grandparents cards but that is because we are far away so I send cards for every holiday that I wouldn't if we lived close. I bought my mom and MIL gifts from our family, not something specific from my daughter. I did send them cards from us and cards from my daughter and I also sent my daughter's godmother a card. I think it's a little selfish for me to tell my husband that mother's day is no longer about his mother but about me.
We do both. My Mom is an amaing mother and grandmother and deserves to be recognized for both. I don't think you have to chose. I didn't know until reading today that some people consider Mother's Day to be intended more for mothers of younger children at home. I'm not saying it's wrong or anything, but I guess it wasn't until I grew up and left home that I really understood what an important thing a mother is. I always loved my mom, but I didn't know as a child the sacrifice, worry, and unconditional love that mothers give. My Mother's Day is usually spent showing my Mom how much I appreciate her, and showing my kids how thankful I am to be their mom.
I didn't even know that there was a Grandparents Day until I read it in another person's post. I think my parents would probably give me a strange look if I tried to do something for Grandparents Day because I know they've never heard of it either! :-) It's a nice idea, but it seems easier (and makes sense) to celebrate it all on Mother's Day and Father's Day, and plan ahead of time with extended family to prevent any conflicts or hurt feelings.
Mothers day is for Mothers and their children (adult children too) Grandparents day is for Grandparents and grandchildren, Ive never been aware of Grandparents day- likely because my parents dont choose to be grandparents & my ex mil passed several years ago. Now we have a baby& a new MIL so maybe. I dont think Mothers day should "end" when your kids grow up & move out, motherhood changes, but you are still Mom, you love & worry etc for your kids after they leave the nest... So many different opinions here, I guess.
I send my mom a card on both, but IMO mothers day is really for mothers with children still at home as far as special things. Although if we lived in the same town I would gladly invite my mom to dinner with us and let my hubby treat us both. I guess I am in a different boat than a lot of woman though, because I do not have a mil. My hubbys mother dies when he was a little boy and my father in law has since admitted he is gay. I supposed it would make it even harder if you were trying to split it 3 ways.
FYI, National Grandparents Day is celebrated on the first Sunday after Labor Day, so this year it is on Sept 11.
