We are in the market for a new digital camera. I bought the one we have now before our 4.5yo was born and it has not been a very reliable camera. Can anyone recommend a good, small digital camera that's under $500? Also, please share any experiences with digital cameras that you've not been happy with. Thanks!

I have a Nikon CoolPix 3100 and love it. It is 3 years old so not available anymore but the CoolPix line is great! Nikon is a very good brand too. Many people have commented on the quality of my photos and I don't even have it set to the finest setting. I mostly use it for the kids and keep the photos at 4 x 6 size so I don't really think about the ability to blow them up large. Go to Best Buy and sample the cameras there.

Hi, we have had several digital cameras over the years and our favorite by far has been our Casio. It's very small and versatile, yet easy to learn the settings, takes great photos AND can take movies with sound (not super high quality like you'd get with a movie camera, but still pretty good) and was well under $500. We got ours at Target just before Christmas last year. Some of my favorite features are that the battery stays charged up for a long time, it has a large viewing screen and the capability to replay your photos as slide shows. This has gotten us through several restaurant experiences when our 2 year old daughter was ready to leave long before we were finished eating our meals. We'd whip out the little camera, set it up to play the slide show of photos and buy ourselves enough time to even have dessert! Check out the Casios, I don't think you'll be disappointed. I will second the other readers thoughts on staying away from Sony products. Have fun! N.

My canon powershot S500 has been a dream. Great pix. Canon is highly recommended by dealers over other brands due to the increased resolution. Good luck.

We bought the Canon Elph, and it is perfect for keeping in your purse (I bought a small protective case), pocket and takes decent photos. Just make sure to learn about the settings, otherwise you will end up with grainy photos. I learned the hard way. :)

One other bonus, is that the memory card goes directly into any 2005+ Dell laptop or computer to make saving them on the computer VERY easy and no cables to worry about!

As for a camera we were NOT satisfied with ... our Sony.

Hi J., Which ever camera you decide on do not go below 5 megapixels. This means that a photo can be blown up and still be nice and clear. Another tip is go with a camera that is within your operating saavy. If you want a point & shoot, look into a Kodak with the printer dock. If you like to fiddle with settings and different lighting etc, go with a Canon or Sony. I have had several over the years and both of these have been reliable, sturdy and take wonderful shots. Good luck with your choice.
