Diaper Rash Problems

I really like a product called Butt Paste. It works wonders. My kids had diaper rashes and I would use that and by the end of the day the rash was remarkably better.

A&D Ointment works wonders. I think every woman in my family kept it on had for each others kids. : )

I always used Bag Balm (find at drug stores, farm/ranch supply stores, health food stores--not very expensive either) and my daughter never got a diaper rash at all. I've talked to other people that used it when a diaper rash began and heard they had great luck with it. Good luck! Poor baby, hope you find the answer soon.

My son had diaper rash so bad that his crack was bleeding and my ped told me to us resynol...it is over the counter but you have to ask for it behind the pharmacy...I got my container at Target...Works like a charm...over night the crease had healed and no more bleeding...I still have the very first container and he is now 3, so a little went a long ways!! GOOD LUCK!!

Try Triple Paste. You have to get it from the pharmacy, but it doesn't require a prescription. I'm not sure why it's not on the regular rack, at least at my store, but it does work very well. It's a bit pricey but worth it. Good luck!

I know this may sound wierd, but my kids doctor told me that a hair dryer works for rashes. just at the lowest setting

Try Vaseline. We have used it on our chidren whenever they get a bad diaper rash. It is very protective and doesn't come off when they pee. Unlike a lot of other ones. Usually when we start using it, the rash clears up in 2-3 days. It comes off easily too, so don't be afraid to lube him up.

I have a 3 year old who hasn't had but two or three diaper rashes, but every time they flared up I would consistently use the Butt Paste. Sometimes it took a day or so before I could notice a visual improvement, but it did seem to sooth her more and then it wasn't long before it cleared up. I would definitely keep the dr appt though if it's still not getting better. Best of luck!

If the there are open sores then maybey you should show the Dr. There is a special mixture of cream and antibiotic called Aunt Beckys butt paste that my Dr. Perscribed a few years ago when my infant had open sores on her bottom. The sad part is trying to find a pharmacy to make it. For us it was the pharmacy right next to the pediatrician. The sad part is I ran all over town ( not knowing that there was a pharmacy at the pediatrians since I had always used my own) In the end it worked out and the Butt paste was a godsend.

My oldest (now 3) had issues like this also. On occasion he would bleed it got so bad. What worked best for us was to put a little Neosporin on the bad spots and cover it with diaper cream (put the diaper cream on thick). (The doctor may prescribe Nystantin or other antifungal for him as he did with my youngest. I still covered that with a good layer of diaper cream.) I found early on with my now 7 month old that the absolute best diaper cream for him was Aveeno diaper cream. It is absolutely great for him. Also, as far as the wipes go, use the sensitive wipes that have no perfumes or lotions. All the brands make a sensitive or "free" wipe. Pampers Sensitive were the softest for our son. At times we would even forego the wipes and I would use Viva paper towels (very soft) with warm water. Let him dry completely wheather you use wipes or water before applying any creams. We would pat him dry with a Kleenex or tissue to speed things up. Goog luck to you. I know those teary-eyed diaper changes are heart breaking...

Here's a recipe from our doctor.

Butt Spackle

1 tube A&D Ointment
1 Tube zinc oxide (I use Balmex)
2 Tablespoons Bacitracin ointment
2 Tablespoons Maloxx

Mix it up and spackle it on! I'd probably wait until those open sores are healing, though, using the antifungal cream.
This Butt Spackle is great stuff, the Maloxx neutralizes the acid in urine and that is soothing.

I hate to say it, but it sounds like a yeast infection to me. My oldest had one when he was about 2 years old. Very painful, didn't like baths or diaper changes at all. When you take him in for his appointment, they'll probably give you some nystatin cream for it. :) I'd try and get him in sooner if possible.

I am a nurse that takes care of sick babies. Sounds like a bit of a yeast infection. You can get Lotrimin cream over the counter for the rash. Apply it 4 times a day.

Hi T. - Try putting some Neosporin or other antibiotic ointment on those sores. Let it air dry for a minutes, and then cover with the diaper rash ointment. Change him frequently during the day like you've been doing. You may want to see if you can get into the doctor before next week. If those sores turn an angry red and start to ooze, get him right in. I fought diaper rash for 2.5 years, my girl took and antibiotic nightly for a medical condition she has, so she was VERY prone to the get it.
1- Do not use wipes, get paper towel and get it wet, the stuff in the wipes is terrible on little butts.
2-Air is his butts best friend, try getting some small training pants; they will help let air in while protecting your carpet!
3-Try lotrimin anti fungal-NO MORE THAN 2 TIMES A DAY
4-Hydrocortizon 2 times a day
5-Diaper cream every diaper change (my favorite is triple paste-pricey but it works)
6-Don’t uses soap in the bath till he is healed, it will irritate it more.
7-Sounds kind of weird but put Mylanta on his butt before diaper cream. It will neutralize the acid in is pee, and poo that has started to eat as his skin. Make sure it is dry before putting on the diaper cream.
8-Feed him yogurt, it will add some natural bacteria to his bowls, to help straiten things out.

Okay stop using the wipes and switch to just a very soft wash cloth and warm water to wipe him up. I never had much luck with the butt paste clearing up my little guys rash so I just stuck with the desitin. If your little guy has open sores than definitly get an ointment that has no scent or alcohol base in it, that's what's causing the stinging. Good luck and hopefully this helps a little.

Have you ever tried Eucerine Dry Skin Therapy (original moisturizing creme). That works wonderful!! Doesn't sting on an open sore! I have also used it on the older kids when they have the 24 hour flu. They ask for it when they have a sore bum!

My daughter got really bad rashes when she was little, and my Dr. told me to use Domboro- if I remember correctly it was a powder that you put in water and had them soak in. I also found that pure lanolin cream ( the same kind that you would you on sore nipples during breast feeding) was better than any diaper cream out there.

My 26 month old daughter has fought the diaper rash wars for over a year, and I can tell you that we have had to use an antifugal cream on a number of occasions for open diaper rash sores. When it gets as bad as you have described, only a prescription medication will do. I realize that you said he had an apppointment for next week, but I would call the doctor's office and ask for a prescription or the chance to bring him in for a sick baby visit this week--then ask if you could also cover the well-baby questions while you are there.

Hi T.~I know your post is quite old, but thought I would let you know I use Boudreaux's Butt Paste for any type of diaper rash. My second son had severe diaper rash and this worked wonders. I also LOVE plain old Vitamin A & D ointment. It is great for diaper rash and chapped skin or lips, as well as treating cuts and things like that. Very multipurpose!!! Both of these are available at Wal-Mart. You really should one, if not both of them! Good Luck!!!!

Ask your doctor about Laniseptic - it is a skin protectant commonly used on the elderly when they are incontinent. I use it on my 2 year old daughter and it works great.

Try egg white. My doctor recommended it years ago, and it worked for my kids!

My daughter had this as well--open sores and all...and at about 13 months of age. I took her in and they said it had been a yeast infection/diaper rash that just aggrivated itself into the blisters. They told me to go to the pharmacy and pick up Lotrimin (the box will say it is for athletes foot). I also stopped using wipes and just used a warm, soft washcloth (the baby washcloths that are thin work best) and dried to dab as oppose to rub. I did still use sensitive wipes if it was a messy diaper as opposed to urine. Anyhow, after dabbing or wiping, allow the butt to dry really well--continuing to let him run around will help. After that, rub on the Lotrimin and then put on the Desitin as a barrier. Change diapers right away as well. They will still fuss and it will still sting a bit when you apply the Lotrimin because you are still rubbing an open sore but it will get better within a day or two. Ps. Even if it doesn't turn out to be this, I asked the doctor and the Lotrimin won't hurt anything either way. Good luck!

Your son has a yeast rash, as others have stated. When my daughter got this way, I got athlete's foot ointment. Talk to the pharmacist if you have a hard time finding it. But put just a little bit, enough to cover the rash and then put desitin or other diaper rash ointment over the top of it. This will keep the medicine on the rash and you should see the rash starting to clear in a day or so.

Another good remedy, since the spots are so sore is to use gentin violet. My sister thought she tattooed her daughters bottom, but it really doesn't say permanent and it works really well for yeast too. I use it when my daughter gets yeast in her mouth.

I agree it sounds likes yeast. I would stop using wipes and use wash rags with warm, slightly soapy water. Coconut oil, you can find it at a health food, will clear up a yeast rash really quickly.
When he is able, a warm bath with epsom salts will also help draw out infection, but wait until the rash isn't as irratated because it could sting.
A yeast diaper rash is a sign that there is yeast overgrowth in the body. I would also give your son lots of yogart, if he will eat it. Yogart contains good bacteria that will help get rid of yeast in the body.

I know that Rosie O'Donnell once recommended letting a dog lick the bottom of a baby with Diaper Rash once. Whats really funny about that is she was serious!! LOL Well I dont recommend that, I just thought I would send you some humor on this. My doctor high recommends Triple Paste. You can find it at Walmart. Its hard to find other places and its not cheap, but it works wonders. Its made for more yeasty type diaper rashes. Good Luck!

I have never dealt with fungal or yeast infections, but if you find it is a normal diaper rash, I may be able to help. My daughter has VERY sensative skin, and use to get horrible diaper rashes. I use all Arbonne products now, and because of the drastic difference they have made for my family I started my own business. If you can't get Arbonne, atleast make sure to use something that doesn't have mineral oil in it!!

have you tried bag balm? thats the only thing that works for my 16 month old.. you can buy it at rite aid, feed mills. maybe walmart or walgreens. or at tractor supply. it really does great for me / baby. nothing else works. you can buy a little container to see if it wor ks. but for the money i would buy more. you can use it on other areas too and animals...

Hi T., we have used a layer of aloe vera(fresh from a plant or out of a bottle) then cream , then powder. Aloe has a natural pain releiver and helped clear up both our childrens rashes when then were little(now 2 and 5 ourgirls).
Also daily baths, and some bare bottom time to let the air in to help dry it out is great!!! Good luck!! Also, we put wet paper towels in an wipes box, and used just wet towel to clean bottom at diaper changes.

Aquaphor (made by Eucerin) is the only thing that works for us. I have even switched daycare kids to it and it was miraculous. Kinda spendy, but worth it. Sold in the lotion isle at Target, but most places have it with the baby butt creams.

Both my daughter and my son have suffered from different types of diaper rash. My daughter was prone to skin yeast infections. She once had a rash like you are speaking of, open sores and stubborn rash. I tried everything. I felt HORRIBLE. She would cry as soon as she saw me take out a new diaper. I stopped using wipes because I thought the lotion inside was irritating and switched to using a warm wash cloth with just water so it wouldn't sting. Here is what SAVED me with my daughter... Often in children (and adults) our bodies go haywire. Anything can trigger it-colds-new weather-slight stress-teething... hormones go slightly off. I'm NOT big into homeopathic stuff, but a friend told me that plain, not vanilla, yogurt smeared on the rump a couple times a day would clear it up. AND IT DID!!!!!! Same as that it works to keep certain female infections away, the culture in yogurt helps to neutralize the skin. Give it a whirl! Hope this helped, let me know.

This should save you time from going to the Dr's. Buy an anti-fungal cream similar to one you use for feet. The cream heals it so fast! This was advice given by my Dr for my son and it was healed in no time!

In the meantime, use warm washcloths and leave the diaper off to air out the baby. Another suggestion is after the infection heals, try vaseline with every diaper change as it will put a barrier between the bottom and the bowels. It makes for a much easier cleaning as well!

He might have a yeast infection. I would call his pediatrician, and describe the symptoms. Often times a yeast infection will be more red then a regular diaper rash. they can give you an ointment that is specifically for yeast and it will clear it up quickly. Good luck!

As soon as a rash starts, I stop using wipes and start using baby oil and a cotton ball to clean the area, then I use Tripple Paste. The kids actually like the oil, non stinging and it cleans and pre coats the area before using the paste. If the rash is bad, see the doc. It may be a fungus.

My son had a really bad diaper rash when he was a baby and it would not go away until (1)we stopped using wipes (they irritated the open skin more) and only used warm wet washclothes to wipe. (2) then we used a cream called Calmoseptine. It's the only cream that worked and wouldn't irritate him more (we had used Desitin and Butt Paste and A&D Ointment etc.) (3) along with the calmoseptine we used plain old cornstarch. We saw results within a couple of days. Good Luck!!!

When my kids were younger I remember my aunt telling me to go to meijer or kmart whatever and get the same cream i would use for a yeast infection or even athletes foot... It is all lotrimin and works even if its just a rash and not yeast, but works for yeast also.... Then she said that even tho i would probably ended up with a cpl messes "a naked baby is a happy baby" lol Let him run around and air it out...
On top of soda bath (as someone else said) try the oatmeal bath works wonders for chicken pox, poison ivy etc....

It sounds like it might actually be a yeast infetion and they need to give him medication for that. I would call again and ask if you can get him in sooner or talk to a nurse about doing a phone consultation so you can possibly get a precripton for the medicine and try it.

My son has to have surgery due to a cyst on his bottom and what they had us do was give him baths like 4 times a day in water mixed with a little epsom salt and let him soak for about 10 min at a time. I realize it is a different situation but you could possible ask a nurse or doctor about trying that as well.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for the little guy. Oh and one more tip... they had me instead of using wipes use a spray bottle of warm water to just spray his bottom off when I changed his diaper so it was less irritating.

I feel for you. My daughter had the same thing, where it was spots that were open sores. My doctor actually had me go to a dermatologist who told me the very best thing for it was to air it out, use a wet washcloth to wipe with instead of a wipe (water is much more gentle, I just went and bought a package of wash clothes just for her that I could bleach), and to use desitin regular...he said to look and make sure it was the desitin with the 80% zinc in it under active ingrd. he said the higher the zinc the better protectant that it is...then after applying the desitin very heavy to sprinkle with corn starch on top of it, and also the most important thing to do is to change the diaper when it gets wet and really try to keep him dry dry. I hope this works for you. I now swear by this method with our baby that we have now, at the first sign of a diaper rash I start this routine and I can usually get it gone before it even becomes a diaper rash. Hi T.. It sounds like your baby may have a yeast infection. my friend's baby had this and it was patchy and oozing. I believe the doctor told her to use a topical anti-fungal cream as desitin won't clear this up. Make sure to read the labels or call your doctor's office to ask what kind of cream you can use on the baby. Good luck!

It could be more of a yeasty diaper rash. My son has one right now and we're using Lotrimin. It's helping and it doesn't seem to sting like a diaper rash cream would. I'd try that and if it doesn't work, then see if you can get in to the Dr. sooner than later!

It might be a yeast infection on his bottom. Try an antifungal cream (like the kind you use on athletes' foot). Generic versions work just as well as the expensive brands. Put it on at least 4 times a day. You can also put a cup of baking soda or more into his bath. Try to avoid the wipes for awhile, these can aggrevate the spots. Use a damp washcloth or damp papertowels when you change him.

My son is also 14 months and he had a very very bad diaper rash about a month ago, and I could not break it. His whole butt was red. For him it seemed it was whenever he would poop it got worst. I believe I narrowed it down to something he was eating, well actually anything that contained Red Dye 40. And believe it or not I have found a lot of things on the internet stating children have problems with this dye. I am not saying that is what it is, but if if seems to get worst when he poops it is probably something he is eating. I hope that helps.

Triple Paste is great to use for those problem diaper rashes. You can now purchase at most Target stores. Another thing to try is using aquaphor and desitin original mixed together.

I recommend baking soda baths. Just dump a bunch in the bath tub (no bubbles/soap) and let him soak. Do this 3-4-5 times a day. You can even do this in the kitchen sink. Try not to use wipes- just let him get "cleaned off" in the tub.
Both of my boys (now 9 and 10) had this. I noticed it when they started eating lots of crackers. My pediatrician said this could be from the yeast in the crackers and the baking soda neutralizes the acidity that is causing the rash. Good luck!

I have had excellent results with Aveeno diaper rash cream. Aveeno also makes an oatmeal bath that helps soothe irritated skin (Walgreens has a generic version that is much cheaper). It comes in packets that you add to the bath water. I think Desitin irritates the skin more. Butt Paste works fairly well, but like I said...I have had the best results with Aveeno.

My sister is a nurse and has 3 kids of her own. I have two little ones and we both swear by Calmoseptine Ointment. You have to ask for it behind the Pharmacy counter. I worked at daycare centers while in college and used all the other diaper rash creams on the kids. This stuff really works! It stays on very well and heals things up in just a couple days. Older kids sometimes will say it stings a little at first, so I don't know if you want to put it on big open sores or not. My daughter has never complained though. It claims it "protects, soothes, helps promote healing". I'd give it a try. It doesn't wash off very easily if you don't want to rub over the area. Try using baby oil to remove the extra if the bath doesn't remove it all before putting fresh on.

I think your doing the right thing by letting your child go without a diaper for short periods of time. It helps air it out. I have used triple anti-botic ointment along with butt paste to make a barrier. It worked well with my kids. I just used the store brand like Target. You can find the ointment in the same isle as band-aides.

My daughter had the same type of problem. I stopped using wipes for the time being and used wet wash clothes. It wasn't as convenient as wipes, but that really helped. I also used vaseline and really put a VERY thick layer on it, and then dumped another layer of corn starch, and that was the only thing that worked for us. I also let her get air to it whenever I could--that helps too. Also, really dry the baby off after bathtime, so the diaper and wetness doesn't feed it more!

His rash could be candida. My little girl had a similar problem. They gave me nystatin cream and it worked well. Please take him in especially if the blisters are open the earlier treatment is instituted the better. Good luck!

For yeast rashes, we used the 7 day monistat cream twice a day for three days and also tried to cut down on the sugar intake. Hazel (19 months) doesn't get very much extra sugar but we really tried to watch so she didn't get more sugar than usual. Sounds weird, but it worked!

For plain ol' diaper rash, naked baby and lots of yogurt to eat. Preferably yogurt that does not have high fructose corn syrup in it. YoBaby! is good as are most grownup yogurts, like Yoplait.

For fungal diaper rash, I don't know, as Hazel has never had that. I would have to agree with the rest of the folks that you should try an anti-fungal (athlete's foot) cream like Lotrimin. Don't use a spray.

Also, talk to your doctor before the appointment next Tuesday. Sometimes they want to see the baby to rule out anything else.

ok now this happens in my famly a lot with the babys, we take care of it doing what you do but also by useing bag balm. you can get it at tracter supply stores. rub it all over the bum even the parts not hurt. do it every time you change the baby. and after baths and just if you think its time. also your on the right track useing the corn starch. good luck.

the diaper rash may not be just "diaper rash"...it might be thrush...kids usually just get it in their mouths....but can get it on their bottoms too....could also be a yeast infection or some other fungal infection....do show it to the doc as soon as possible!

meanwhile try to have him without a diaper as much as possible...put layers of bath towels etc in his crib when he naps etc....change his diaper at the fist hint of wetness....perhaps consider buying him some 'big boy pants' even tho he's not trained yet....the cotton fabric is softer than the lining of the diapers....

instead of using wipes just use wash cloths with warm water.....and go as natural as possible...not meaning you should be buying 'natural' products....just the less stuff you put on his skin the less there is for his skin to react to..cornstarch is good....it not only absorbs but also sort of 'waterproofs' the skin ...

i'd be careful about using products not specifically meant for use on babies, as they're meant for tougher adult skin and could irritate his sensitive skin even further....

my son had a horrible diaper rash that sometimes even bled when he was little....the doc recommended giving him cranberry juice to drink as it made his urine less acidic....wasn't a cure but it made his urine less irritating while he was healing....

my son had a similar rash and the doctor had me get an antifungal cream (1% clotrimazole--store brand) and mix 50/50 with a&d ointment. within 3 days it was gone, but we continued to put it on until the 5th day and it didn't come back.

My daughter had something similar about a month ago, she even bled a little from the sore. I used A&D ointment and it help her clear up within a couple days.

I suggest TriplePaste - our pediatrician gave us samples, we now use it when diaper rash gets worse. We use Desitin with almost every diaper rash, my son has very sensitive skin and we also use Pampers Sensitive wipes.

Definitely go to the doctor. Doesn't necessarily sound like diaper rash to me. Could be yeast infection. Triple Paste is the only thing I've found for diaper rash that works great and doesn't irritate even more. You can find it at Target and some drug stores. Friend also said try bag balm.

I have used an ointment on my kids bottoms for years and it works great. It is called Corona Ointment. It is actually made for small animals but it is really really great on diaper rash. I know it sounds funny but it was recommended to me by more than one daycare provider. I usually by it at a local drug store. My husband has used it on his finger tips because they get dry and cracked from some chemicals he uses aat work. I have used it on my toes, especially in the winter when they get dry. We have used it on all four of our kids and even a bad, raw rash is gone in a few of days. Another thing to do is rinse the soap out of the wipes with warm water before using them and it won't sting his bottom and the warmth can have a calming affect.

It sounds like a yeast infection. They are hard to get rid of, but hoprfully your doctor will proscibe you with a yeast medicine. If that doesn't work you can always try vaciline, it locks out the moisture so the rash can heal.

Take him to the doctor it sounds like it may be a yeast or fungal infection. Neither is a big deal and all babies get them, but it sometimes takes a perscription to get rid of.

My daughter Claire had the same thing and the doc said it was a topical yeast infection. He gave us a medication but I have also used triple antibiotic paste which is near the butt cream at Walgreens.

It might be a yeast infection. It happened to my son this year too. It acted exactly like a diaper rash, except it wouldn't go away no matter what I did. The Dr prescribed Nystatin cream for it.

You can put some epsom salt in the sink with some warm water and let your child just soak in it once or twice a day til it clears up. Triple paste is by far the best rash cream ever! My daughter got a horrible rash that nothing would heal (including perscription creams from the dr.) then after usig every kind of cream and ointment I tried triple paste and it cleared right up and ALWAYS prevents her from getting rashes now.

I know the answer to this is long overdue but I am going to answer it anyway in case another mom has the same problem in the future. My son is famous for this type of rash. When a "diaper rash" becomes this severe and seems to not be curable, more then likely it has developed into a yeast infection or "jock itch". All you need to do is grab an over the counter remedy to fight the fungus. You can find it at any grocery or pharmecutical store located in the same section as the treatments for athletes foot.

On top of the cream, as a twist of my own, I sprinkle Johnson's baby powder with cornstarch. Baby powder is softer on their skin than just pure cornstarch. It works well to keep the moisture off the wounds as they heal.

My daughter got a rash like that too. You would be suprised but your doctor will have you buy a diaper rash ointment a long with an antifungle and use it both on his bottom at the same time. There is bacteria like fungas that is not going away so you need an antifungle. The suprising part is that the antifungle cream is actually a foot ointment for bad feet. You will find it at any drug store over the counter in the foot ointment section. My daughter is now 6 years old but we have a baby in the family that had the exact same thing perscribed for his rash within the last year so I know they are still using this remody. I know this is going to sound odd, but our 11 week old had some bad diaper rash a few weeks ago and nothing seemed to help. We looked it up online and found out that Malox, the same stuff you use when you have heartburn. Or any other brand as well. You pour it over the rash and into the diaper when you change them. It cleared our babies up like the first or second time! It works great and doesn't sting like some other things we've tried. I also asked my doc about it and she said yes that helps because of the acid in the pee or something. But give it a try and you'll be surpirsed!

This time last year, I was in TN for a month and my twins were 14 months old too, and my son started having this diaper rash that sounds just like that- it hurt too bad to even wipe him- he cried every time he got dirty, as if the "poopie" was burning his skin- which is did seem as if it was for some reason.

We tried narrowing down what he ate- never came to any conclusions- it still happens every now and then but we tried everything you can think of on his bottom, til finally a Pharmacist pulled a jar from behind the counter called "Resinol". It was the MIRACLE cure for him!! It doesn't take much, but it makes the sore spots go away in a matter of 1-2 applications! And it takes the pain out of it. Ask a pharmacist for it!

If you haven't seen this type of rash yourself, you may not understand it, as it is the only time I have seen it and I have 4 kids and am the oldest of 7 kids!
