Hi... I have a 8 1/2 month old baby girl, she has gotten her fist diaper rash. I change her diapers often but yet she still has one. She was on antibiotics last week for an ear infection and I was told by a friend of mine that the antibiotics could give her a yeast infection. I have been using Lotrimin (that is what the doc said to use) and plus I use the A&D ointment on her. But all that is not working. Its starting to bleed when I wipe her and she screams her head off. any suggestions on what to use? Please help!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The doctor finally called me back and they are going to give her a prescription for nystatin. However, I am still going to buy some other diaper rash medicine. Thanks for the wonderful advice, I appreciate it all.

My daughter also got a bad rash after being on antibiotics. The dr said to let her go without a diaper after we change her and give her a chance to air dry, he also had us use cortizone cream 3 times a day. We saw a difference the first day! Hope this helps :)

If the yeast cream isn't working, try using maalox. It could be an acid type infection, and maalox works wonders very quickly. Good luck

Just one more... Cloth diapers and/or as much nakey time as you can cope with. If you know her elimination signals and patterns, you could get a bowl and place her over the bowl while she goes. The dryer she is, the faster the rash will heal.

If you let her go without a diaper for a while the rash should go away pretty quick. All of the moisture that is in the diaper, ie, any ointment and wet diaper, is going to make it worse. I know you'll have a mess to clean up once in a while but the end result is worth it.

When my son was little he got diaper rashes mostly because they didnt change him enough at the sitters and he had very sensitive skin. The stuff that I found worked the best was "BOUDREAUX BUTT PASTE"... I use to have to have the pharmacist make up some but I believe they sell it just over the counter. If not I am sure your phamacist knows what it is.

When my daughter would get diaper rashes like that, my doctor advised me to use monistat on her. Just a little, not a lot, and it helped out. Her rash had gotten to that point of nothing else working. We tried all the diaper rash creams and even powder but nothing worked until i used a little bit of monistat on her. It helped out tremendously

My son does the same thing. I am so sorry for you and I feel your pain. We used Monistat and it took care of it pretty fast. They had told me Lotrimin too and I'm not sure if it is the same exact thing or not, but the Monistat worked for us. Also, if you are not already, you might try just straight water to clean her off instead of baby wipes. Even the sensitive wipes would make my son scream like that and I think it is because there may be alcohol in them and burning some. We also gave our son Motrin or Tylenol to ease the pain and it took the edge off. The last thing we did was used Dove soap on him in the bathtub to clean him off. It always took about 5-7 days for him to completely get over it, and it seemed like we went through everything to figure out the right combination for him to get well. He always got them after antibiotics so now we feed him lots of yogurt when he takes antibiotics. Sometimes it helps. Best of luck and it will be over soon. Take care.

Lay some towels on the floor and let her crawl around without a diaper for a little while every day. Also I usually let my 7 month old lay around without a diaper once or twice a day. Once during the afternoon and once after her bath that way she can air dry. Then when you put the diaper back on completely cover her bottom with diaper cream (I use Desitin Creamy). My little girl seems to get a lot redder and irritated in the diaper area than my little boy ever did. Usually after a day or two of doing this the rash goes away. So I have just started letting her crawl around naked every day. Also you can try giving her oatmeal baths every once in a while to help with the irritated skin. You can buy boxes of oatmeal bath by Aveeno in the store.

Hey there Bobbie!! I know exactly what you are going through. I just went through this diaper rash thing last week. I highly recommend using Nystatin. You have to get a prescription through your doctor. It is for fungal infections. To help dry it out I am a "HUGE" believer in Corn Starch. YOu should be albe to find there in your kitchen!! Just sprinkle it on like a powder. As for using wipes.....I had to use wet, kind of luke warm wash clothes for her. I think the wipes stung her more. I use to do same thing with my other two kids when they were babies. Good luck to ya!!

Bobbie,
Give your little girl a warm bath and then use desitin diaper rash ointment one time when you change her and baby powder the next time, and keep doing this until the rash clears up. The Dr. told me to do this when I thought my grandaughter had a yeast infection. It turned out she didn't have one so I didn't use this treatment on her, but you can try it and see if it works!! GOOD LUCK!!

I would take her in to the Dr. If he says that he cant do anything get another opinion. That is not typical of a yeast infection and needs attention. I am not a nurse or Dr but I do have them in my immediate family and I am also in the health care field. The fact that it is bleeding concerns me. Your poor baby. Best of luck.

Bobbie,

Hi - I know it's hard when they have rashes like that. I used Balmex (sp?) on my daughter when she was a baby. It was the only one that really seemed to work and it cleared up rashes within a day. There's no alcohol in it - like other diaper creams so it soothes more then burns when you put is on her. You can find it anywhere with the other diaper rash creams.

Hope this helps!

Good Grief! There's a lot of diaper rash experience out there, huh? You've gotten some good advice, some to take with a grain of salt...mostly...it tends to vary from one baby's skin to another as to the magic solution. Budreau's Butt Paste did zilch for all three of mine, but I tried it, and maybe it will work for you. I bought everything I could get my hands on with a yeast infection for our youngest once and here's what helped us... A & D in the ointment - not cream, baking soda baths, corn starch (never baby powder due to risk of inhalation by the baby), yogurt is good, and keeping it dry. Don't use the wipes for a while - if you can. Try rinsing her little bottom with water...it's very painful right now and the wiping will hurt like heck! Probably after the antibiotics she does have a yeast infection and the monistat, or other OTC preparation will help. I hope she gets better soon!

I had a daycare kid do this back in 1998 and it bled so bad that the DHS inspection people made me drop the child as a client. His mom used Ammen Powder on him to finally clear it up. When my younger two had the same problem most often from yeast infections after antibiotics or after rounds of diarrhea. We used Ammens Powder.

You can find it at Walgreens in the real powder isle.

If your really careful, you won't spread the powder around in the air. Don't use any other ointments or creams with this stuff.

Apply a thin layer of Maalox or Mylanta to her bottom, let it dry, then put a heavy layer of Desitin or other diaper rash cream. The antacid forms a barrier to protect their skin from the acid causing the rash. Works very well to clear it up quick! Very strange, but works like a charm! This info was given by a triage nurse. Hope this helps.

My daughter is 9 months today. She got her first diaper rash at 8 months. We got bag balm at Wal-mart in the pet department. Her diaper rash was 80% better in 12hrs. In 24hrs. it was 100% better. The doctor, today at her visit, said it was a great thing to use. My daughters butt was also bleeding. Also when you wipe try to pat her butt instead of wiping. Use soft cloth with water or the wipes that are unscented and nothing added to them. They will burn less. We use the unscented plain parents choice from Wal-mart. They are the safest for a dialy use.

Hi Bobbie,
We had that problem several times with our baby, and every time we've done the same things that the doc suggested, and it went away pretty quickly.
Get her in a tub and pour baking soda in the water 3 times a day. I know that's alot, but it really does help. When she's out, blot Maalox on her bottom with a tissue, even the bleeding parts. It eats away at the rash. Yes, we thought this was weird too, but it really works. You can use a hairdryer to lightly get her bottom really dry, or you can just air dry her well. Then, really dab on the Desitin, or whatever diaper cream you use.
This has helped our baby alot. Unfortunately those stinkin antibiotics really do a number on their poor little bottoms! Hope this helps.

Blessings,

We used Bordeaux's Butt Paste on my daughter's diaper rashes. It is a little on the expensive side but so well worth it. It is very thick and it seems to have soothed her and it usually started making a difference within the first or second use. I will tell everyone in the world that it should be a staple that you buy along with diapers. It is awesome stuff! My daughter rarely got diaper rashes but when she did they were doosey's. Seriously, try it!

In addition to all the advice you have recieved I would suggest not using diaper wipes until she is better. They are really made out of a rough material and can aggrevate an already bad situation.
I once had a problem with my daughters face being chapped and red and the daycare was really getting on my case about it. I was trying everything to get the redness to go away. One day while I was there I watched a daycare provider take a baby wipe and start washing a childs face with it, I instantly realized that they were creating the situation. I made it very clear that they were not to use baby wipes on my daughters face again and the problem was solved. My point being that most wipes are harsh and contain irritants.

Hi...one of my sons has always gotten a yeast rash (at times very bad to the point your daughter's is) when he takes antibiotics. First of all, don't use wipes on your daughter, no matter how sensitive they say they are...they all still have alcohol. A wet paper towel does just as good of a job & after they're wet, they're not rough. Just be very gentle, as I'm sure you are already. Second, Lotrimin alone never worked for me. I got this prescription (all over the counter medicine) from my dr. & I use it everytime. You can notice a difference in sometimes than less than a day...just apply it everytime after you change her diaper, and remember, no wipes until she's better! ...

Butt Cream Mix (as so eloquantly called by my son's Dr.):

-Maalox Regular Strenth liquid (does smell minty) 60 ml
-Hydrocortisone Cream 1% Cream 60 gm
-Lotrimin (Clotrimazole) 1% Cream 30 gm
-Bacitracin 500U/15 gm Ointment 30 gm

My suggestion...mix the Hydrocortisone & Lotrimin together, then add the Bacitracin, then when throughly mixed at the Maalox. It does smell minty, but it works wonderful & the cream itself does not hurt. Where she has the open sores, anything's going to sting a little though until it heals, but I swear by this stuff. It's wonderful!!

Good luck & I hope she's feeling better soon!

Hello Bobbie,
My daughter had a bad diaper rash when we came home from the hospital. The Dr's tryed all the cream to see if it would work. I came home and asked my mom what to do she went in the kitchen, and put flour in a pan and started cooking it. She let it cool down then put it in a salt shaker, and said try this. I used the brown flour for a week and her rash was gone. So you might want to try this on your daughter. Hope this is some help. Good luck!

Check her every half hour put a litle bit of cornstarch in with every diaper change and strange though it may sound let her run around for an hour or so per day with out a diaper if you have a pack and play put down a couple of chucks ( pea pads ) and let her nap without her diaper on. I know that last suggestion sounds strange but it worked when my 11 year old stepson was a baby it worked for my little girl and it has worked for several of my friends. when you change her give her something sweet to eat or a favorite toy. It may also be the brand of diaper and or wipes your using.

I had the same thing happen. My doctor said to by gyne-lotrimin cream and also some diaper cream(I chose Desitin Overnight and works great!). Wipe only with water. Let air dry ten minutes before diapering. Rotate between using diaper cream and gyne-lotrimin. If it's diaper rash it will start to go away within 24 hours. If it's a yeast infection it may take a couple days. I followed the doctor's orders and it was completely cleared up in two days.

If you want to try a better wipe, use either Lansinoh brand wipes or Target's "generic" version of Lansinoh wipes. They are in a purple package and soooooooo gentle! Alcohol free and they contain lanolin to protect baby's bottom. You find them by the breastfeeding products (nursing pads and milk pads). They are intended for breastfed babies b/c b.f. babies poop so much, they get irritated from all the wiping. We used those for awhile but switched to pampers due to the cost. About 2 weeks into the pampers use his rash started up again. As soon as we swithched to Lansinoh, the rash went away. I was at Target on 9-17 and they were on sale at $3.09 for 100 wipes, so I stocked up! The generics cost $2.49 for 60 wipes.
You could also ask for an rx from your doctor...Nystatin will clear it up; and it's on walmart's $4 rx list. if you get the rx, make sure you use it sparingly b/c a little goes a long way.

OMG, I'm so sorry about your daughter's diaper rash. I can sympothize. My daugther had one that lasted nearly 2 months when she was first born. I also did the lotrimin. What finally worked for us was a bacterial cream prescribed by the doctor. I can't remember what it was called but it was for a bacterial infection. Her pediatrician also suggested taking Malox or any anti-acid liquid and blotting it on the rash area with a cotton ball. I know that sounds weird but if you think about it cuts the acid so it keeps her bottom from burning b/c it's keeps the acid from getting to the rash area. Also, I had to quit using wipes for a while. I set up a changing station in our bathroom and used a warm wash cloth to clean her. So, all in all, our routine was like this; wash with warm wash cloth, dab some prescription cream on the area, put a little bit of butt paste (I loved the A&D for this) over the cream, and then blotted the Malox on there. It worked great for us. You might talk to your pediatrician about a prescription cream. Good luck treating the rash!

I have a wonderful "recipe" for a diaper cream called 1-2-3 paste. You need Zinc Oxide paste (cream will work, but paste form is better), Aquaphor and a solution called Burrow's Solution (which is an astringent). I have the Burrow's, which is expensive, and if you'd like, you can contact me and I can provide you the full recipe (and give you some Burrow's) so that you can mix your own. It works well, and you only need a thin coating of it. This was given to me from a pharmacy in Anderson, SC.

My son had the bleeding bum for 3 years (thank goodness he's potty trained, FINALLY) so I can TOTALLY relate to you. I've tried pretty much everything, and this is one of only 2 solutions that actually worked.

Hi Bobbie,
Watching your little one scream because they hurt so bad tears you up inside. My son Colter has had his share of diaper rash (18mo old). Rinse out the wipes before you use them. They have soap that can burn really bad with open sores. I know that Academy of Pediatrics doesn't recommend Baby Powder but as long as they don't inhale it and it is only for short term use it is perfectly fine. It was the best advice anyone has ever given me. Baby Powder with cornstarch. Works for my son everytime. By morning his rash looks sooo much better by the end of the day it is almost gone. I also bought some of the "Butt Paste" and it works well too. Good luck..

Yogurt. If you can get organic yogurt somewhere would be best and Stoneyfield Farm's Yo-Baby (made just for babies) would be even better. You can feed it to her and applying it topically would bring relief as well. Use some cloth diapers at least until this passes.

Also, put a small amount of apple cider vinegar in her bath water.

And thirdly, some pure aloe gel on her sore little bottom would help cool, heal and relieve her pain. If you can put a drop of pure essential Lavender oil in the aloe or a few drops in her bath that would also help. Aloe is an anti-septic as well as having soothing and healing properties.

Good luck!

Call your pharmacist...I work in a pharmacy here in Topeka and the pharmacists are SO good about helping people with problems like this. I know that they tell adults to eat yogurt to help...but that is internally...I dont know what the solution is externally. The only other thing I could think of would be to try Desitin instead of the A&D...I always found it to be very soothing and protective on my girls.

BAG BALM! You can get it at Walgreens or in the pharmacy section of a store and Babies R Us. It comes in a green square can, can't miss it. Gob it on, and I mean just gob it, put a diaper on and do diaper changes often over the next 24 hours. You'll definitely see a difference. Also, if you can, take the diaper off, gob it on and let her go 'all natural' for a few hours. This will also help tremendously. Be careful of the balm though as it is very oily and can stain. It's an old farmer's recipe from way back, but it's absolutely fantastic. Sometimes those 'grandma' remedies are the best, and this is one of them. :-)

I know you've gotten so many answers, but one more never hurts:) I buy all of my home products from an online/catalog business that makes it a point to make their stuff with only natural ingredients or non-toxic chemicals. I have found that their lotion is the only thing that will help when my daughter gets a diaper rash. I use it with every diaper change. If you'd like the info on it, I'd be glad to send it over. Hope the baby gets better, ASAP!!

I've had the same problem lately with my daughter. A&D has never worked for us, and up until now Desitin was the ticket. But even Desitin wouldn't touch the last rash my daughter had. A friend recommended Boudreaux's Butt Paste. It's awesome! I just put it on after every diaper change (a lot at night)and she cleared up within a day. I now use it at every change to prevent the rash from comeing back. Good luck!!!

I know this is going to sound crazy but it will work, use plain yogurt. My 3 year old suffers from yeast infections continuously even under her arms and before potty training she would get them frequently not matter how often I changed her diaper. Monistat starts to get expensive so I had a nurse recommend plain yogurt and it worked. Good luck

My oldest would get a rash every time we put him on antibiotics and bad ones like your talking about. The only think that worked for us is something called Triple Paste. We have to ask for it. It's not a perscription but I have found that most stores hold it behind the pharmcy counter. This stuff is not cheap but it works wonderfuly for us. Hope this helps your little one.

If at all possable let her go diaper free for a while after you change her. Try to pat with the wipe instead of wiping. Also try wet cloth instead of babywipes it may be the chemicals in the wipes that are making it hard to clear up.

okay , if it is a yeast infection. You need to put her bottom in a tub of water everytime you change her. Let it air dry and try Balmax. The Dr. can give you other stuff for a baby, for a yeast unfection too. But, never swipe it, blot it. Good luck!!!!!!

My daughter had a horrible one from some meds she was on that gave her chronic diarrhea. The doctor prescribed her some diaper rash stuff. I don't know what it was called because it's been so long, but it was a creamy yellow and smelled alot like cake mix. The warren clinic at 31st and memorial has a pharmacy in it, it's the only place that has the stuff to mix it. It's wonderful, just that first day it almost completely gone. No one that I've talked to has ever heard of it, but I'm telling you, you HAVE to try it!! Also, just wash her with warm water, not wipes or wash clothes.
The doctor that prescribed it is Dr. Cohen at the interchange plaza (31st and memorial) his number is ###-###-####.

It is definately a yeast infection. You need to stop using the diaper rash medicine and just use the Lotrimin. When my daughter had one we used Monistat and applied it 3 times/day. If the Lotrimin is not working maybe you should switch to Monistat. Good luck, it should get better soon.

Just as a little side note; my mother also suggested to give your baby at least five to ten minutes of naked time to give their skin some air. Skin needs to breathe, and keeping it covered in a smothering diaper all day doesn't give it enough dry time. It will help reduce the chances of rash coming back. Same with the powder.

Bobbie, you may try a powder that had corn starch in it. I use to use this on my daughter, she use to have ear infections all the time and was always on antibotics. Hope it works for you.

The best thing is to keep it dry. After you change her, pat cornstarch on he bottom to help dry the area, & let her run around without a diaper for a little while everyday. This will help it dry & heal. I've also heard cloth diapers help because they breath better & allow it to dry. This might be safer than letting her run naked. :-) Good old fashioned Boudreaux's Butt Paste is also good at protecting the bottom from moisture.

My sister's daughter had a horrible diaper rash with bleeding when she was a few months old and her doctor recommended she use this ointment called CORONA. She did and it worked great and that is all I have ever used on my two kiddos. Some Walgreens carry it but it is behind the counter. You can also get it at feed stores. It is in a yellow tube with black letters. It is actually for horses but it is so thick that it protects them better than anything else I have seen. It is around $8 a tube but the stuff lasts a long time and is well worth the money.
