Diaper Genie of Something Else?

Ok, we have a 18month old little boy, and from day one we have been using a plastic grocery bag on the back of his door for dirty diapers. When it's full, we take it out. This was working, but now that he goes #2 more, it gets a little gross. Now we take them straight to the garage trash, that was working ok, but now the garage smells horrible and we have gnats terribly out there, and they're starting to come into the house. Can you guys tell me about the diaper genie and if you like it, or any other ideas for storing dirty diapers?? Thanks in advance! :)

What can I do next?

I really liked my Diaper Genie!

I kept it by the changing table while my boys were in diapers (my youngest is now 7, so it has been a while). After my youngest got out of diapers, I moved the Diaper Genie to the garage, and actually occasionally still used it (there were some underwear that was easier to replace than try to wash clean!).

It did sit for a while in the garage, unused, until I started putting the scoops from the cats' litter box into a spare plastic grocery bag which I then placed into the Diaper Genie.

About two years ago, I cleaned it up real good and gave it to a friend (she had a teenager and found out she was pregnant). I was happy to see it not just thrown away.

BTW, I used bleach in my city garbage can to get bad odors out of it. What worked the best, when the weather cooperated, was to leave it open to be aired out. I would place it on its side and position it where the sun could shine in it real good. I have heard others say they put some regular cat litter (just "Oil Dry" clay product is great) in the bottom of their big garbage can (after each pick-up) -- to help absorb the odors.

My sister had the diaper genie with her first and I had the diaper champ with my first. I know we each chose not to use it when our 2nd babies came around. For us it was that the champ didn't smell while the lid was closed in the room but when you opened that lid to take it out, it was the most awful stench immagineable. I think my sister just got tired of having to buy the special diaper genie bags, but I'm not sure. Either way, we both went back to doing exactly what you are doing now, just taking it immediately outside.

When our garbage can got really bad we hosed it out really good to get it clean then sprayed it really thoroughly with Lysol. Now every week after the can is empty I respray with Lysol before putting any garbage in it. We still have to hose it out every couple of months, but the Lysol seems to help with the smell and the flies.

Good luck,
K.

It doesnt take a "diaper genious" to know that you empty a genie outside....

Good luck and I hope you find your answer.

P.S. Be warned that if you buy a used/old genie, you might have a hard time finding bags for them.

At this point I wouldn't invest in the diaper genie as your baby won't be in diapers much longer. I would either buy some cheapy ziploc bags from the dollar store, or some of those smell good diaper baggies that come on a roll. That way your nose won't be assulted everytime you walk into the garage.
