I could only do my left hand cause for some reason my right hand wouldnt work! When it was time to prick my finger I would lightly rub each finger tip and see what one hurt the least!
So I got diagnosed with gestational diabetes and got my testing stuff to test my blood 4 times daily. I was curious for those of you out there that have to test, how do you decide what finger and stuff. Seems like a stupid ? but I do the sides of my fingers and notice that the ring fingers are sorer than pointer and middle. How do you switch off, just go down the line ro what. Thanks

I'm right handed so I never used my right index finger. I also never poked in the center of the finger. A great trick that worked for me was to put a rubber band arround my finger before poking, that way I always got a good sized blood droplet.
Massage your hand for a minute and shake it while holding it downward to get a nice rush of blood going. You can alternate fingers. I did pointer and middle finger but none of the ohters as they were more senstive.
If your doc agrees that this will be accurate enough for you, use the outside/heels of your hands. I've compared, and get the same readings. Generally less sensitive than fingers, and little or no residual soreness. I've used this area for years, and even when I test many times a day (I occasionally test on rising, before and after every meal, before and after exercise, and at bedtime – my fingers would be so unhappy on those days!)
I have no pattern.
If you are a methodical kind of person,
you might prefer having a pattern that you like . . . .
pinky on Fridays, middle finger in the mornings, whatever.
I generally just look at my fingers
and see which one looks pink and plump in that moment.
I rarely use my thumb because the skin is thicker
so I would have to use a higher setting for a deeper poke.
I generally use either my pinky or my ring finger or my middle finger.
I find poking the fattest part of (the last joint of) my finger
is less uncomfortable than poking the side or the tip,
but that may just be me.
BTW, the alcohol swab they tell you to use?
I don't. I wash my hands with soap and water before I poke.
Remember to drink a L-O-T of water.
Good luck!
