My bathroom is in desperate need of a makeover. Currently the walls are a dark blue, the trim is white, the cabinets regular wood color, countertop is off-white, shower tiles are gray, and the toilet, shelves, and bathtub are white.
I am wanting to paint the walls to match the gray tiles and am thinking of painting the cabinets a couple shades darker gray. I don't have the extra $ to change the counter so it will remain off-white....so the trim, shelves, toilet and bathtub remain white......I'm wondering - should I just forget about the off-white counter and let it go or paint the shelves and trim to match the off-white color?????

Love everyone's feedback. Funny-I had posed this question to my sister as well - she gave me the 'boring' comment too! I guess I think I have to work with the grey since it's the tile and I can't change that right now. She suggested a muted yellow for the walls and use the white/yellow/gray theme........hhmm decisions
If you're going for a monochromatic theme, it's fun to add in punches of accent colors like red, orange or yellow.
You can actually paint the counter, but you can't paint the sink. I painted my kitchen counters and they turned out great! Here is the kit that I used:
I was really nervous, but it wasn't as hard as it looked. I practiced on a piece of cardboard first. I did it over a year ago and they look amazing and haven't chipped or anything. It's very durable.
If you want a granite look for your counter and you don't mind having the actual bowl of your sink remain off-white, go for it! With the granite look you can combine the off-white and the gray color schemes.
I wanted to suggest that you look in your area for a "restore" place. Our restore store has granite bathroom counter tops for $5 they are new and beautiful. they also have many beautiful sink / cabinet combos for like $20. I didn't think we could redo the bathroom but redid the whole thing for less than a hundred bucks. and that includes the paint and a new rug, new sink / vanity combo and an over the toilet medicine chest. the only thing I really spent full price for was the oval mirror.
Didnt' read the replies, but I know you can paint countertops or decoupage them. You can google it, or I think I saw it featured on oneprettything.com once.

You can get sort of a "Nantucket" feel in the room with that coordination.
I love that idea of painting the cabinets a darker gray and the walls maybe a soft, dove gray. I would leave the off white counter for now and leave everything else a pretty crisp white.
I'm an interior design blogger and read tons and tons of design mags/blogs. You can incorporate the off white in the design through towels, a pretty shower curtain or a frame on the wall, shells... But having the pure white trims and suck will look stunning with the gray, and you can also incorporate that through accessories as well.
It's finally okay to mix shades of white, and make it look beautiful.

Of course I can't see the room, but gray walls, cabinets and tile sounds kind of boring to me. I think if the gray tile is just in the shower area, you can treat it as more of a neutral and you can do something like khaki (Khaki to the yellow/gold side of khaki) on the walls, paint the cabinet gray and then antique it so it's not so much a different shade of gray but more a different texture, like old barn wood, then look for a framed print that kind of ties that together. If the shelves and woodwork are off white, you could leave them but if they are a stark or bright white, than I would go to more of an off white trim. Another possibility is to go with a citrus lime color on the walls and paint the cabinet white and look for a fun graphic print in a frame or for the shower curtain. Another possibility is a white and black theme, paint the cabinet a distressed black, paint the walls gray and white stripes (slightly off white).

I think your game plan is excellent.... gray is a great choice! Right now, my younger son (15yo) is lobbying for charcoal gray in our great room. I'm against it because our current color is a distressed raspberry. I want something mid-toned....moving away from the darker shades. Who's the boss here, anyway? We have paint chips posted all over the room! :)
