Dealing with New Neighbors.

My upstairs neighbors moved in last Friday. I know that you are going to get noise especially in a older building like mine. But the first night they were up until 2am slamming things, vacuuming, and had 4 kids (not sure how many are theirs because when they were moving stuff they had closer to 10 but I haven't seen any since Sunday) running and jumping off their bunk beds. Everyday they blast their music all day long. They vacuum atleast 3 or more times a day. And things are still being slammed and dropped. We've had people upstairs before and they were never this loud.
My son can't take naps. They start all this around 7 in the morning and don't stop until around 11 at night. One of them is home all the time and always has people coming and going.
Is there any way I can tell them they need to quiet down without being mean? They moved from apartments down the street that always have police and fires. I really don't want to start something. These buildings were so quiet.

What can I do next?

bake them a pan of brownies, cookies etc. to welcome them to the building and gently tell them some of the quirks of the building..(this older building really lets the noise travel, so we have to be careful and courteous of others) etc. maybe the gentle hint will hit home. if this doesn't work..try the landlord!

this isn't easy! Could you talk with your landlord or owner about the situation. And ask that you not be mentioned but since they are new to the building... maybe they could address it as...management has rules and expectations of all residents esp about noise, loud music, upkeep of property etc?? hope that idea helps! good luck.

I say let management deal with it. You can go say something yourself but I assume since you live in an apartment building, there are other people who live in this building aside from them and you. I would call your landlord and tell them your problems, really pushing the severity of it, and have them deal with it. That way they don't have to know the complaint came from you.

Maybe you could bring them some cookies or banana bread or somehting and welcome them to the building. Then you could very politely inform them your son is having difficulty sleeping and taking naps. Maybe you could ask then to be a little mindful of the noise when he's napping (tell them what time) and after his bedtime (again tell them what time). It is possible they don't realize how loud it is for you.

Good luck!

I would tell the landlord. If you have been a good tenant, then he/she should back you up and speak to the people on your behalf. Have you spoken to any other neighbors about it. There is always power in numbers. Good Luck
