I just heard about this patch. We now have health insurance (so grateful), and are getting ready to put our 10-year old on ADHD medication again.

Just wondered if any of you knew much about the Daytrana patch, and whether you felt it was effective? Would love to hear your opinions about Vyvanse or Strattera or Adderal, etc.

Thanks.

My son was on Daytrana, 10 mg, from April-October. It worked very well for him, but he did have the typical stimulant-drug side effect of a decreased appetite (he went from 65 to 61 lbs). He also got pretty bad skin irritation at the application site.

We have recently switched him to Vyvanse (20 mg), and he is doing well on it. It is a capsule that we can sprinkle on his food (I put it on pudding). It is still an extended release drug, which is what he needs at his particular school. The appetite suppression isn't as bad as it was on Daytrana. However, he does seem more emotional (cries easier). I am hoping that as his body gets used to it the emotional effect will lessen.

We've stuck with Ratalin for a few years now. He gets a whole pill in the morning and a half at lunch time. By the time he gets home he has no meds in his system. I like this because it's totally gone, no build up, no residual effects.

The only think I can say is that his case manager is pushing us to try a time released version of it. She says he'll stay evened out longer.

I don't know much about daytrana. But I know that adderall and Vyvanse are stimulants and Strattera is a non stimulant. Sttratera needs to build up in your system and I have heard from our doctor is not as effective for focus as the stimulant medication is. We have tried Vyvanse and even though it helped with hyperactivity it was not that helpful for focus. It had the least amount of side effects in terms of insomnia, appetite loss, and anxiety.
