Crib as Teether

I had the same problem with my girls. I'm not familiar with the Gummi Rail, but all of the other ones I tried did not work, because it went over the top, but my daughter would use her bottom teeth to knaw into the wood, too. So I happened to have an extra strip of some fleece fabric from a blanket someone made me, and I cut little strips along each side, laid it over the railing, and tied the strips in between the slats. It worked great, and she just had no interest in chewing anymore...I know with my daughter, even if you put something else that she could chew on, she would just stand there and chew forever if it was something worth chewing on, like plastic. So the fabric worked well, because she didn't want to chew on that.

Dear Michele,
It is very important to not let the little Boy chew on the railing,of the bed.Maybe you could tie his bumper pad on top. some of the older beds have Lead in the paint. Which is very toxic of babys.

We have custom cribs with the really wide rounded rails, get the gummy rail protector at Babies-R-Us. it is a self adhesive stick on that did not dammage the cherry or mahogany wood on our two cribs.

Babies R Us sells something called "Gummi Crib Rail Cover" and it adhers to the rail to protect your little one from eating the paint! I haven't used mine yet because my baby is only 7wks old...

I agree with Amanda re: the gummy rails. My son just chewed them right off as if they were never there...then the adhesive was useless. I'm going to try the site Amanda posted.

I'm not sure how to get him to stop chewing on his crib rail, but I would recommend getting him an amber teething necklace. You can find them online. I got my daughter's off of ebay.

Had the same issue! gummyrails! worked great - now I just have to figure out how to repair the chew marks under the gummyrails....

Check on line with 'one step ahead'. They usually have all the hard to find items and unusal things.

I did the same as Brooke D. I got some fleece, laid it over the top of the rail and cut slits inbetween and tied them together. I still have that on his bed! None of the others worked for me because his crib rail was too wide. I even had to put fleece on all sides! He would chew everywhere! It works like a charm!

There are fabric covers for the crib rail - Bite Me Bumper (http://www.rtkidworks.com/Bite%20Me%20Bumper.swf) and Leachco Easy Teether (http://www.amazon.com/Leachco-Easy-Teether-Cover-White/dp...) are two of them. They look easy enough to make, too - that's what my sister had done by her mother-in-law so she got to customize fabric and the size. Good luck!

Have also been using the gummy rail. It is adhering fine to the front rail, been having trouble with the two side rails, they angle up because crib is higher in the back, but has worked so far. She chews on the rubber gummy rail that covers it. Would be skeptical of the safety of making something up yourself, kids have a way of getting things apart and could be harmful, but the fabric thing someone mentioned specifically made for cribs sounds like it may work. Good luck, my son never did this, so was caught off guard when my daughter started at 6 months.

I second the gummi rail! I spent way too much money on teething guards. The gummi rail was the only one that fit our crib.

GummyRail! Ours did the same thing at about the same time! We are having another one in Dec. and just yesterday I went out and purchased a couple more boxes. Found some at Babies R Us in the safety aisle and they also have it at Right Start.
You can mould it to any crib...not like the Prince lionheart skinny ones at all...way better.
It SAYS that you can remove it with a hairdryer and not leave any sticky stuff on the surface, I have not tried it, but my husband is skeptical. That is really the only drawback we have run across

i'd use two strips making one big one. that's what i did back when my daughter was doing that also. good luck.

My son did chew on his rail much, but we never left him in there too long when he was awake. I heard from a friend that the Gummi rails work. Be thankful that is all he is chewing on, because my son loved to chew on the window sill and his walls. Talk about a mess and that was not fun to repair!

I fastened a rolled up beach towel to the rail. I used zip ties, but that left sharp edges so mayby tying it on with some type of nylon string would be better. good luck.

We also have a crib with a wider than normal crib rail, and I bought 2 gummi rails and never got them to stay on. My son kept pulling them off and ruined the adhesive so they were useless. So please don't waste $12 on a gummi rail. We ended up gettting this product on this website listed below, and then I sewed it on in 4 tiny spots to make sure he couldn't undo the velcro. Let him use it. My kid did it too, and it didn't hurt him one bit. His crib is wood, and now there are a bunch of bite marks in one spot where he preferred to chew. Everytime I see it I have to laugh.

My son did that as well. I could not find a rail protector since he was using the head and foot part of the rails not the one that already had a teething guard. I just let him do it after a couple of weeks he was done with it. The bed looked horrible I just ordered a touch up paint pen from potterybarnkids and it fixed the problem. It doesn't look exactly perfect, but it did a good enough job to hide the problem.
