You definitely need to cover it with something, or he's going to get splinters in his mouth. Why not try ripping up an old, clean T-Shirt into strips, and wrapping the wood with that. If you wrap it very tightly, I doubt that he could bite through the cloth, and it would probably feel good on his gums.

There are lots of different types of covering for the rails of the crib. Google search it - but I also know "One Step Ahead" had things to cover the crib rails also (catalog). My dgtr did the same thing and her crib looks horrible!

hi D.. you can get the crib tent 2. its overkill for your problem, but you will probably love it anyway since your son is getting to the age where he is gonna try to climb out. i dont know how i lived without it with my 1st baby. they sell it at one step ahead. it will keep him safe, keep his stuff and his arms/legs inside the crib, and keep him from chewing. but mostly will keep him safe.

I had the same problem with my son and his crib had a curved railing. We bought Gummi Rail. It's clear and easy to mold to any shape. It also doesn't ruin the paint on the crib. It worked great. One piece of advice...if you use a humidifier in the room often it may not stay on too long. We use one daily and after about 2 months it detached from the crib. The moisture made it come off. Other than that it worked wonderfully.

Get the softer, rubber-like cover with the sticky back. The sticky back doesn't work well, but a little super glue will fix the areas that curl up!

We tried the gummy rail many, many times and had bad luck, even with super glue. I like the idea of just taking the kid out of the crib. He can play elsewhere. The foam that you use on the edge of a table is bad b/c he could eat the foam in pieces.

We bought crib" bumper 'strips at Babies r us. They are a long strip of cloth that fits right over crib rails & attach with velcro underneath. These did the trick for us with chewing issues as well as added protection from baby slipping & hitting head/chin on railing when standing. good luck

Take him out of the crib he is bored. thats the bottom line its only a matter of time till he climbs out

I had the same problem with my son a few years back. There is a product called LEACHCO Easy Teether. It is a padded cloth covering that velcros over the crib rails, it comes in different colors and even has little velcro loops off of which you can hang appropriate teething toys. Best part is that it is machine washable so when it gets gooey from being chewed on you can just wash it and it's good as new. I have them on the crib again for my daughter even though she doesn't have teeth yet!! I'll be ready for her when she does. This is by far the best product out there for this, I have no doubt. I believe they sell them at Babies R Us and can't recall whether they are sold individually or in a pair. Google it... you won't be sorry.

Tell him NO and give him something appropriate to chew on. Try different shaped teethers until you find one he likes. They sell bitter apple which you might try putting on the crib, but the best way is just to tell him no. I found what works great with that age is to startle them. Try to catch him chewing and let out a VERY loud gasp followed by an equally loud NO.

Hi D., Most cribs should be painted with non toxic paint. I'm sure a few of my children also chewed on their cribs. Try getting him some other things to chew on and also put something on the bar that does not taste good. This could stop him from chewing on the crib. Grandma Mary

I would try another brand of the crib rail, if you can't find anything that fits I would buy the roll of soft foamy stuff (they sell it a babies r us or toys r us. It is supposed to be for the sides of coffee tables and such but it would shape itself to the crib so there is no reason you couldn't use it there unless you think he would bite off pieces of that too.

Hi D., In case you're still looking for ideas ... I used the Gummi brand "crib rail cover", which is a soft, bendable material that adheres to the crib rail. It worked pretty well for us for a few months, but on occasion I needed to re-stick the material, since my son figured out how to pull it off.

I bought this and it's great- washes well in the laundry and I'm so happy that it's made of safe cotton fabric. It does the job. My son chews it and there is no more damage to the crib anymore. I bought two. One for the front and one for the sides, that can be cut in half and then just sew the edges up.

So happy that you did.
I have had the same thing happen with my daughter just this month!
I had called babies r us and the person told me they didn't have anything for the crib rails.....hmmmm. I guess that person was not very aware of the products in the store.
My solution was that I went to Walmart and bought 6 yards of a really soft fleece blanket material and I wrapped and wrapped it through all the posts so that the entire top of her crib is covered with the material. It is real cushiony and this helps for when she "wants to dance" so that she does not hit her mouth on the hard rails. Later on when she does not need the material there, I plan to make her a blanket for her bed with it. Just another suggestion if you find that what you purchased does not help as much over time.
