Creative Ideas for Boys Bedroom

My husband and I are trying to decide on a creative bed for our son. He is going from a small toddler bed to a full-size bed. We were going to get a bunk bed but changed our mind. Now we want something different, like those tents/structures that go over bed or a special headboard, etc. Any thoughts? Our son is 5 years old and loves sports, especially hockey.

What can I do next?

What about those loft-style beds? Some of them look pretty industrial, very boyish! He could have a fort or play area underneath and as he gets older, move the desk/study area under there.

I like to look at the Pottery Barn Kids catalog for ideas (but I'm too cheap to buy there!). Have fun with this project!

Well I don't have any ideas for a headboard, but an easy and relatively cheap way to make a kids room fun is the vinyl decals. They are completely removable for when you want to change it or move (the glue is sort of like a post it) and really make the room fun. I've seen lots online for a sports theme and they are very easy to put up.

I know you said you've decided against a bunk bed, but check out this bed from ikea. It's called a reversible bed. You can construct it as a loft bed, with play space or storage underneath, you can make it a typical bunk bed with matresses on top and bottom, or you can make it a bottom bunk only, with the "starry sky" tent on top for more of a canopy/tent feel. And one other cool thing about it, as if the versitility of it isn't enough, is that it's not as high as a typical bunk bed, so for little ones, it's safer, plus, for older ones, they're not as close to the ceiling!

My son has this bed (he's 4), and it is so cool. He LOVES it. He plays endlessly in the bottom of the bed, because with the matress on top, he plays like the underneath is his cave, house, tent, etc, etc. The only thing we did to make it a little safer, since my son was below the recommended age for the bed (I think it was 6), we screwed handles onto the sides of the ladder at the top, so he would have something more substantial to hold onto while climbing up and down, instead of having to hold onto the bed itself.

Have fun choosing!

we got a bunk bed for mine & he loves it. I took his crib skirt, bumper pad, etc... & ripped them apart & cut out the designs. i then bought cheap sheets, cut them & sewed the designs on. I then Stapled the edge of the sheet to the inside of the top bunk on all sides, but the wall, then rolled & tucked it in where you can't see it.Now when he wants to "camp", I just unroll the material on each end and the front & you have a tent. The outside has th same matching design as his curtains & wall, so looks great. His theme for his room is boys bugs & my daughter we did girly bugs. We did the same for her as well. Very cheap & fairly easy.

What about a soccer/hockey net as a headboard? I saw that online and it looked amazing! For a sports themed room it was really cute.

I was going to suggest a hockey net as a headboard but saw that someone beat me to it! If he has a favorite player, what about creating a fabric headboard and making it look like a jersey with the players name (or your sons) and a number?

If you do the hockey net as a headboard, I'd suggest painting the rest of the wall to look like an ice rink! Not sure how detailed/complicated that would be but sounds cool!

Another idea I love is the pirate theme - make the bed look like a ship or at least add a 'sail' in the corner of the room with some fabric. You could do a mural of the ocean behind it. If you did a loft bed, you could probably figure out a way to make it look like a ship with sheets and stuff.

I also like the idea of a camping/outdoor theme - with a Berstein Bears type wooden bed and you could always get a bed tent (not the baby ones) to go over it or just buy a pup tent and put it up in the room. Do a mural with trees and the forest.

Other ideas for headboards for a regular bed would be a basketball hoop (just attached to the wall above the headboard), fabric headboard that resembles a baseball diamond or football field).

Good luck and have fun!
