My 11 month old daughter has a patch of cradle cap on the top of her head. It has been there practically from birth. I never did anything about it, thinking it would eventually go away. This week I started thinking maybe it never would and that I probably should have done something about it from the beginning. So I have started attempting to gently scrape it of with my finger nail. When I can get her to sit still in my lap to do it. Which isn't going to quickly. Does anyone have any better advice on how to remove it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for the advice. I applied aura glow oil a little while before her bath. When I got it wet I then used her baby comb and it all came right off with very little effort. Now it is all set. I wish I had done it sooner but she seems no worse for the wear!!!

Hi Kristen,
I have found putting baby oil on her scalp daily, sometimes even a couple of times throughout the day, has taken care of the cradle cap. My hairdresser swears by using Paul Mitchell Baby Shampoo. She would put it on the baby's head at the beginning of the bath and let it sit there while she finished bathing her. She would then rinse it off. I have also read doing the same with regular dandruff shampoo, letting it dry, rinsing it off and then using a baby brush to slough it off. I would not use a finger nail but a brush might be a littler gentler. Good luck.

There are a few products on the market specifically for cradle cap - don't waste your money. What I did for both my kids was what grandma did years ago and my friend who is a hairdresser still recommends today. Rub a bit of Johnson's Baby Oil on her scalp and comb it through with a very fine tooth comb (the baby comb from the hospital always worked best). It will lift the dry skin right up without scratching and it will also keep her scalp moist. Follow up with shampoo. Do that a few times a week when you bathe her and you should notice a difference. Although it seems like it will never go away, cradle cap is temporary. Good luck!

Our pediatrician suggested just using regular dandruff shampoo. We used it on my daughter, and it worked perfectly (oil never really worked that well for us). Just be extra careful when rinsing that it doesn't get in her eyes. Avoid baby shampoo, since it is harsher & more irritating that one would think. Baby wash seems to be much milder - and fine for their hair. Someone suggested tea tree oil shampoo to me when we were working on my daughter's cradle cap. I didn't try it, but it is worth a shot.

Try massaging baby oil on it, combing it through & then washing it out. Adult dandruff shampoo helps too. Good luck

cradle cap is just dandruff on babies.... and it can last for a while so don't worry if it doesn't go away right away.. my kids had it until they were almost 1.... the best thing is rub baby oil on her head and massage it in with your nails (it will get under them and it's gross) then about 5 mins. later wash it out in the bath with your shampoo you use... then take a comb and brush it out after.. it'll loosen it up. good luck.

Hi
I had the same problem with my daughter, and thought it might go away on its own, but it doesnt.
My sister in-law told me to try baby oil, and a mens comb, or any comb where the teeth are close together. I did, and it worked pretty good. I've had to do it twice now, and there is still a little bit left, but most of it is gone. It all depends on how long your daughters hair is on how much you use. My daughter has a lot of hair already so I used a good amount, probably the size of a quarter.
Oh, and it will leave her hair greasy for a couple days, I just bathed my daughter everyday untill the greasy look went away.
Good luck with everything!

Gentral Naturals Cradle cap treatment worked wonders when my son had cradle cap. We used it twice and it never came back. You just comb it through her hair and then bathe her.

K.,

Use baby oil, my son is 16 years old and still has psoriasis not sure on spelling lol and I still use it and works wonders. I put a capful on his head when he was a baby and then wet a face cloth and gently rub it until it loosens not everything will disappear right away but eventually will get less and less. It does leave the hair greasy so I shampood his head after with baby shampoo. Good Luck

Hi K.,

Put some baby oil on her head about 2 hours before tub time. then use a baby shampoo scrubbing brush and shampoo...it will work over time. You can use a fine tooth comb to remove some of the flakes as well after they start to lift. Good luck!

I would go for the gentle naturals for cradle cap too. My daughter had it really bad and I tried that twice and it went away and never came back. I had tried other over the counter products, but they did not work. If you cant afford it,I heard baby oil and combing will work. That was going to be my next resort,so good luck.Personally, I would try olive oil over baby oil first(more natural and less ingredients).

Put some baby oil on her scalp. Then take a baby brush and move it in a circular motion thru the cradle cap. It helps lift some it. I was a picker too! Hope this helps.

My daughter had horrible cradle cap from about 3 months to 9 months, basically until her hair started to grow on top :)

I would brush (with a soft bristle brush) baby oil in her hair 2-3 times a day. If you keep brushing it the oil won't get too messy. Then after bath I would use baby oil with a comb. Don't just pick out the flakes with your fingers, and definately don't scrape it off. You will make it worse and more irritated. Keep up with the oil everyday and before you know it it will be gone. If it doesn't go away consult your ped, as it may be eczema.

I have 3 year old triplets and they all had cradle cap. I had thought the it was going to go away too and it did not. I did eventually go to CVS and got a kit for healing cradle cap. It has a shampoo, an oil and a scraping comb. It worked well. I have also heard of people trying baby oil.

Hey K.,
Start with this:

Before her bath - taek some olive oil in your hands and massage her scalp. She will be oily (but is a great moisturizer). Then, when her scalp is saturated, take a baby comb and gently scrape a few layers of the cradle cap off. It will flake off into her hair. Just do as much as you can without her wigging out. I sat my daughter in her busy chair with a few toys to distract her while I did it. Then, give her a bath, and shampoo her hair 2-3 times to get the oil and flakes out. This method will not get everything the first time, but it is gentle is proven to be a good first step.

My 2 daughters never had cradle cap, not sure if we were lucky or if it has something to do with this... while your baby is taking a bath, shampoo her hair..with the shampoo in her hair take a baby brush and brush her scalp in a circular motion. The brush releases the oils in her scalp and helps break up the cradle cap. It seems like the other moms swear by baby oil on the scalp too...Good luck!

I would put olive oil on my daughter's head 10 minutes before her bath and then use a very soft toothbrush to comb a little bit of it out each bath. It took a couple of weeks, but worked and I didn't irritate her head at all. I was always worried about picking off a piece that wasn't ready yet - but this seemed to just gently comb off the pieces at the right time.

Good luck - I know it's frustrating! I had my daughter's 3-month pix taken wearing a hat because it was so bad.
