Couponing and Bargain Shopping

I have tried couponing in the past but found it only cost me MORE money than not couponing. Part of the problem is I cannot shop at a ton of different stores because my husband is never home and I have a son who turned 2 years old last month and a almost 8 month old daughter (17 months apart). They do not like shopping/cooperating for too long and so I stick with Sam's Club and Wal-Mart since I know where everything is and I can get in and out of the store quickly.

A second problem I've had is that I am not finding coupons for things I actually need or use. I know where all the cheapest things are at Sam's Club and Wal-Mart so I purchase those items.

A third problem is that I cannot find on sale deals at grocery stores that correlate with the coupons I have found. I am actually going to TRY couponing/bargain shopping again and actually TRY going to as many stores as my children will allow... but still, I am not finding these great bargains people are telling me they have found.

Please help!! Tell me everything you know about this... all your secrets... everything!!!

Thanks!

I combine the coupons w/ sales. That increases my savings. I often get name brand cheaper than store brand/generic. Then I stock up. I buy multiple papers (typically 4).. Alot of my cleaners and HBA items come from CVS and Walgreens. Got to love free stuff.

If it isn't on sale, I typically don't buy it. If it is, I buy as much as I can. Then, I have a strockpile bought rock bottom, and I don't have to pay outrageous prices. Go thru your grocery ads, and match them up w/ coupons at home before you go. The rare times I end up in Walmart, I find alot of their prices more than the grocery store sale prices. I'm not impressed w/ them.

I have 8 kids still at home, and a husband that works alot as well. Can't help you there. I often hit the stores 9 at night.

I hear you!

What I like about www.couponmom.com (which is FREE to join--forever) is that you can look at YOUR local stores (grocery and drug stores) and it tells you the current weeks deals and the % you save...it also tells you in which coupon insert from what date you can find the corresponding coupon for the sale items thereby giving you the best time to use the coupons. They suggest you save all coupon inserts in an accordion file, by date and then go retrieve the specific coupon when the recommend it.

My only secret is looking at the coupons on the paper and clipping EVERYTHING for any products we do or might use (including beauty/hygiene). I use Smartshopper.com and coupons.com for online coupons and am subscribed to the companies for any name-brand products I use to get emails about deals. Because I do not buy a huge number of name brand products I do not always find good deals. However, I find I use more coupons for snack purchases like crackers, granola bars, etc. I also sometimes find them for things I like to buy but rarely do. You can always throw away coupons if you don't use them but it is nicer to have them ahead of time. I take them with me to the one grocer other than Sam's that I go to (Wegmans!) and often the products are on sale. Even if they are not, Wegmans doubles coupons under $1. I also sometimes time purchases around coupons, so non-perishables we might use I stock up on. I also try to note the lowest prices when I see them and stock up then. I do not put a great deal of energy into this as we frequently make last-minute trips for milk when we run out, realize we have no bread, or whatever. So, I use coupons when I have them and try to cut them out when I can. Sometimes though even with a coupon the store brand is cheaper. It is not worth it to me to drag my kids into five different stores with the little time I have free after work and on my weekends. Most stores have their flyers online so you can see what deals and sales are coming up before you head to the store and plan your meals. :)

Update:

I should also add that mostly to save on groceries, I use cleaning cloths and cut up t-shirts instead of paper towels most of the time (my husband hates it), I make my own laundry soap, and I clean a lot with white vinegar and baking soda-based homemade cleaners. Just the laundry soap has been a huge savings and I never have to watch for a sale while our laundry piles up.

I probably buy 75% generic and it saves a ton of money. For name brand stuff, I try to wait for a good sale and then stock up. For example, this week, the toilet paper I like is about 40% off, so I'm buying 3 24 roll packs to store. Sometimes I'm able to hold a coupon til a sale and can use it at the same time. Unless it is a product I already buy name brand on, the generic is cheaper, so I just buy that. Even with coupons, most name brand stuff is usually more expensive than generic. I know the Walmart here price matches, so I check out the sale ads and take them all in to Walmart and don't have to worry about going to different stores.

A lot of great things to do is to actually go to stores and sign up for their mailers. Follow them closely and they often times email you or snail mail you coupons. I follow a couple site. I would link them to you but my computer crashed and so all my bookmarks are gone. Oh I found on of the sites
http://print.coupons.com/CouponWeb/Offers.aspx?pid=13306&...
I also like target's coupons (go to the bottom of the page and there is a list of pages and coupons are one of them) I am able to find a manufactures coupon and a store coupon for diapers and I save $5 or more that way. If you still use diapers then sign up for your brand's mailer. I am a cloth diaperer but I do use disposables for his daycare (I'm not happy that Utah state funded centers are not allowed to use cloth!) and I get a ton of coupons that way. They also have a rewards program too. At babies R Us they have some good coupons.
