Cookies: Sprinkles Before or After Baking?

My daughter and I are making cookies for her class Valentine party. We are making basic sugar cookies. Heart shaped, of course! She got some little heart sprinkles that she wants to add. Do we put them on top prior baking or just after? We aren't going to frost/ice the cookies.

I usually sprinkle sugar on just after baking and it sticks but will sprinkles stick? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sadly we did not get to make the cookies. My daughter had her little finger slammed in a door at recess. The school didn't bother to call me. I ended up taking her to Express Care. It is broken. Poor kid. So we just bought some cookies on the way home and she enjoyed her party and showing off her splint.

I have to say I am SO JEALOUS!!!
We are not allowed to bring home baked treats to my kid's classes and it was one of the things I was REALLY looking forward to as a mom!
The only treats we can bring are store bought. booo.
I think you put the sprinkles on after?

After, while the cookies are stil soft. If you put them on before, they will blacken in the oven.

I usually sprinkle immediately after removing from the oven, or a few minutes before pulling them from the oven.

If I'm not frosting, I put it on before.

Huh? I always sprinkle first. I roll out the dough, cut out the cookies, place on the cookie sheet, sprinkle, place in the oven.

I've never been happy with the results any other way.

I usually put them on after, right away when they come out of the oven, when they're hot, and then yes they stick.

IF they are the small sugar sprinkles (shaped ones) they will not stick mostly. I did this once and the best way I got them to stick was sprinkles about 5 minutes before the cookies were done. They melted just enough to still have the shape but not fall off.

I usually apply after. I put them on once before and they baked a little. If they don't stick, you can mix up a little milk and powdered sugar to brush on top then apply the sprinkles.
