Concerned About My Cycle

My son is 7 months old and I am still nursing him full-time. I am also taking the mini-pill. So I thought I wouldn't have my period, but it is here...and it has come with a vengence! I have been menstruating for about a month straight now. Has this happened to anyone else while nursing? Do you think I should be concerned? Does anyone know of a great OBGYN in the Akron area?

What can I do next?

Obstetrics & Gynecology of the Reserve. They have offices in Bath and Green. I recommend Dr. Ross Marchetta or Dr. Sejal Pederson (female). Bath: ###-###-#### Green: ###-###-####.

i had a period like that when i stopped nursing and went on a birth control pill. not to sound gross, but i would soak right through a tampon and pad combination in about an hour. it went on for a month or so. i called my obgyn and she changed my birth control and i stopped bleeding the next day. it might be something as simple as the wrong type of pill. the pill i was on was the lowest hormone type. it wasnt right for me.

I had my period for a whole month once...definately go to the doctor. Turned out progesterone helped me; it was after the birth of my 2nd child and after I was done nursing for a year. Not healthy to be losing that much blood, so definately go see a doctor.

I would recommend seeing your GYN or nurse midwife. They might be able to help.

I breastfed full time with my first son, as well. But I was on the depo shots, and I bled the entire 9 months I was on the shots!!!!!!! It sucked! I think it's more to do with the birth control, than the breastfeeding. I would definitely talk to your dr. about it, but it's probably nothing to really be concerned about.

I have a history of a lot of "female" problems, but have never breastfed so I can't give you info on that. However, I second the recommendation that you call Paragon Women's Health. I see Dr. Tara Scott there and absolutely love her! They seem to have really quality docs there!

I did have my period for the first three months that I breast feed and then I took the mini pill and it slowed down but never really went away until I had to have a DNC. My doctor said it was the only way to have the bleeding stop. My son was early and I was induced so this may have been an added factor...who knows. Just make sure that you are getting enough iron I know that this was a major concern of my doctors and eating regularly. Hang in there -T.

I didn't get a period while nursing but my first one after that was a doozy! But it did not last a month! Call your ob, if you don't have one check with your insurance to see if Paragon is on it, if it is make an appointment with Alice Gordon, she's a CNM. She's fantastic! Or just call and speak with the nurse and tell them what is going on.
