What's the safest way to sanitize teething toys? My poor baby is teething and has a yucky cold.

What can I do next?

I use Basic G. It is not toxic and concentrated.

I know many people use bleach and really that is horrible for all of us. Very toxic!!

If ther cloth through them in the laundry if there plastic through them through the dishwasher and if they have liquid in them you have to hand wash with dish soa and rinse in very hot water. If the vibrate do the same.

C.,

Running plastic toys through the dish washer is a great way to sanitize them, but the heat breaks down the chemical bonds in the plastic and causes the plastic to leach carcinogens like BPA. The best way to sanitize the toys is to use a mixture of vinegar, water, and baking soda (if you want to deodorize) in warm - not hot- water. The vinegar dries out the cell walls of bacteria and causes them to die through dehydration.

If you use bleach make sure you use the bleach from its original container or an air-tight container and mix it well with water according to the directions. Bleach breaks down into water and other chemicals when exposed to air and becomes inert within 24 or 48 hours - I can't remember the exact amount of time. Bleach causes bacterial cell walls to explode, thus contributing to the death of the little buggers. =)

Good luck and I hope your little one is feeling better soon.

Good morning; I used to put all of their teething toys in the dishwasher. Safe, sterile and ready in one hour. I also kept 2-3 clean ones on hand, or washed them all at night time. Good luck!

Hi C.,
I found the best way to sanitize teething rings was in the dishwasher. They are sealed and should not leak. (Some of mine were filled with a gel and could be put in the fridge) Or, a mild solution of water and bleach works, too. It was just easier for me to pop them into the dishwasher each time I ran it. Hope this helps! By the way, great job, Mom! D.

I usually run them through the dishwasher, but then always rinse them with hot water after to get any residual soap residue off.

I used to just wash my daughters teethers a few times a day with soap and hot water. Soak it in vinegar water at night. But you could tie a knot in a few baby wash clothes dip the knot in water and refridgerate, once it's used untie and tos in washing maching and not worry about the chemicals in plastics at all.
Hope he's better soon. A. H

I second the vinegar and water. 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water once a week should do the trick (or more often, if you feel like it).

Vinegar and hot water. The vinegar doesn't leave a residue like soap or bleach and it works great. BTW... this combo is great for cleaning anything... bathrooms, kitchens.... safe and a great cleaner. Add a little lemon juice for tough grease and a fresh lemony scent.

C., I used to do it the old fashion way-boil them! sometimes depending on the type of dishwasher detergent you use, it can leave that white residue on them. So I always boiled my children's teethers before I let them use them, and once a week. Those things can get very gross so you also have to watch for the liquid seeping out because it's not water in there. I hope your precious baby gets better, this Michigan weather isn't easy on the small ones/

Take care,

A
