And don't forget to seal them. The shower should be sealed at least once a year, lower-traffic areas every 2 or so years.
I just read the post about cleaning hardwood floors with vinegar and hot water and am going to give that a try. Now does anyone know how to clean slate floors? Mine are black and have white spots on them from our hard water. The shower floors are especially bad with white mineral deposits all over. Thanks, Mamas, I get the best cleaning ideas here!

I haven't fond a great way to clean ours to be honest but I do know you are not supposed to use vinegar actually because it will wear away the stone. I know, and I use vinegar for everything too! No bleach either - same thing - will eat away the stone. So, I read to use a small amount of detergent (not soap as it leaves a white build up on the dark grout) in water or just plain water. I am not satisfied with this method but haven't found a better way. I do know that slate needs to be resealed.every few years
too - apparently it is a really stinky process. We haven't resealed ours yet.
Best of luck. I'm hoping you get some good answers because I'd love to find a better method for our floors as well!
I clean mine with vinegar. Or pine sol if out of vinegar. Vinegar works great!
I think you're uppose to clean slate floors the same way--with vinegar.
