i was wondering, my baby is almost 5 months old. when he was born my husband did not want him circumsized. i did. i had our first son circumsized and he about had a heart attack. am i supposed to pull the skin back to clean him each time i change him and bathe him? the doctor said no that it will eventually start to go back on its own. my husband said that i need to pull it back each time i change and bathe him to clean him.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

well, thanks everyone! it seems all my responses are 50 50 so i am still in the same place.

i am not going to circumsize him. i would have done it at birth if i was going to. i will just continue what i have alwaysbeen doing which was just cleaning him without pulling the skin back. i am afraid of pulling too far and tearing him like the one lady said.

thanks everyone!

I know you asked this a long time ago but I thought i would give my opinion anyway.....
right now it may not seem like a big deal- but in the long run, he may have problems not being circumsized (when he is older- teenager and up...) you definitely need to keep it clean because if you dont he can get build up and his little part can get infected inside-
my nephew got circumsized when he was born but it was done wrong i guess-there was too much skin still--- and he got an infection then he had to get another circumcision done before he was one!- my brother and his wife were so upset over this but I would suggest to get it done.

I haven't had my baby yet, but if I have a boy I will NOT have him circumcisized (and my huband totally agrees!) and everything I have read says do not pull it back!

It will eventually happen on its own when he is much older... I think you can really hurt him and rip the skin if you pull it back now because that doesn't naturally happen until boys get close to puberty. Hope that helps! Good for you for leaving him as nature intended!

My son is intact. I pulled back his forskin to wash until he was old enough to do it, then I reminded him to. The skin didn't separate until he was about ten, so I was worried that I would have to have one for him anyway. Nature takes its happy course, but he does need to clean it. I suspect that if he takes daily soapy baths, that is enough. If he starts to have ichyness, it isn't enough.

I am a nurse and I would just like to tell you that you should definitely pull back the extra skin to clean...b/c if you don't it may start to smell...the truth is at a certain age it should start to retract on it's own but until then you definitely want to pull back to clean

I have a boy who is now almost 4 years old and is not circumsized. I have never pulled the skin back, you can pull gently but chances are it is not going to budge very much. I just make sure that when I wash him that the area gets a LOT of soap.. My pediatrician said as he gets older the skin will move back and as soon as it starts to do that and gets looser then you need to pull it back and wash. My father is not circumsized either (although my husband is) and my mother has told me (we had the same dilemma when Jacob was born, circusize or not)that my father never had any problems but that he did make sure that the area got a lot of attention with soap.. I hope you do not feel bad about your decision not to circumsize...way back when it was a health issue when people only took baths once a week, now it is mainly a society thing...some countries circumsize girls, our country does boys...although it is changing with our generation.... Good luck and don't worry so much...God made him that way. Please email me with any questions and I hope this helps.

I would do it. It is better for him in the long run to do it early.

I have two boys 3yrs and 7 mo. neither of them are circumsized. The doctor told me just to pull their skin back everytime I bathe him and that just worked fine. I never had a problem with it. Everything should be fine and from my understanding you have to pull his skin back to clean out all that white stuff that acumulats so it wont get infected. So thats what the dr. said. Good Luck.

I have a 3 yr old son who was circumcized the next day after birth. I followed my dr's instruction to only clean around the exposed area during diaper changes and only pull back at bathtime for a thorough wash. I have had no problems with smell nor infection...so I would suggest no pulling except at bathtimes (and maybe NOT ALL bathtimes, depending on how often you give him a bath; my son for instance gets 2 baths a day and I only pull back with the morning baths).

I agree with another mum who says since you circumcized the first boy, you should the second. You don't want him to think there's something wrong with him or that he's different from his brother ! Goodluck.

I have a 2 year old and he is not circumcized. I went with what the peditrician told me to do that i didn't have to pull the skin back to clean it. Then at 18 months old he got a urinary tract infection. So we took him to the hospital and they said that I am suppose to pull it back to clean. All I have really been able to do is just poor water over it after i pull the skin back to clean. He won't be still for me when I try to clean it after every diaper change. So I think he could possibly have another UTI. So we are going to circumsize him after my husband gets his health insurance at work which will be in a couple weeks.

Hi H.,
I have two boys, 9yrs old and 5yrs old. I did not want to hurt my 9 yr old when he was little and did not pull his skin back. When he was 3 and 1/2 his father took him to the urologist for another reason and he told him that his skin needed to be pulled back. My other son was an infant at that time. So I started the painfull task of pulling his skin back a little every other day at bath time. It does rip and it hurts but it needs to be pulled back. Now with my baby boy, I started when he was like 3 months old and it was much easier on him. You need to pull it back sooner that later. Now when the boys take a bath I tell them to pull there skin back and they do it all by themselves, and the memories of the incident are long gone and they can clean themselves regularly.

PLEASE DO NOT retract his skin!!!!!!!!!It will cause the skin to rip and possibly severe infection. The skin will break away on its own in time and by the time that happens,he will be old enough to clean himself properly.Just wipe for now.

I realize that you posted this months ago, but I thought I would throw my opinion out there! Since you had your 1st son circumsised I would go ahead and have your youngest son done too. I wouldn't try to make a difference with your boys, especially since they're so close in age (I'm assuming that they're the 20 months & 4 months).
