My son will turn 11 in December so this always makes it difficult since Christmas is right around the corner from his birthday. He hasnt really found anything that he is really in to. He plays video games and reads some but not really a sports fanatic or has any major hobbies yet. I m having a hard time trying to figure out what to get him for Christmas and his birthday. I have thought about some tickets to an aquarium near by and maybe tickets to a major sporting event, just to give him something fun in the cold winter months. Anyone have any ideas?

What can I do next?

Since they are so close together I do like the idea of giving him an event for his birthday. What about even some sort of indoor camp or karate class or something? Maybe your local community center has a basketball camp or something...it might be nice to get him active and see if he's into any of that stuff, I mean he doesn't have to be fanatic but he might enjoy it! I do like your aquarium and sporting event idea too, maybe even look into a membership to the aquarium if he likes that.

The 11 year olds I know really like Legos, video games, science projects and sports. Good luck!

My son is 11 - but his bday is in March....

He loves baseball....XBOX, Wii and his DS...he LOVES to read so books for him is a great thing!!!

If there is something you think he MIGHT be interested in - try it - like a new hobby - something he said about school - liking science or one of his other classes!

Good luck!!

This idea list was actually made for families with children with special needs, but a lot of it may be useful for other families:

I especially like the idea of "coupons" for going places, and the active types of computer simulations (good exercise).

my sons always rode their bikes year round.....they just bundled up!

Does he have a bike or a scooter? & as a heads up: our rule is "outside before any electronics are turned on". So even for my 15yo, he has to head outside with the dogs before he can start gaming....& this rule is year-round.

What about checking out the activity kits at Barnes & Noble? What about car/truck models? My sons loved them....still do!

Is he totally out of the Legos age group? My sons were by age 11, except when they were doing movie marathons.

Does he have any pets? Fish tank, gerbils, etc...would any of this work? :)

I bought my 11 year nephew and niece Play Station gadget or whatever you call it, "The Move" they love it.
How about paying for a full year of sports activity. Get him to take lessons in golf, or learning to play tennis. Try to get him involved in sports, maybe he'll develop a true liking for it, and possibly a future hobby.

Give him coupons for time with you that includes buying a video game, a book or go to a movie. Many kids love time with a parent better than anything and getting something during that time is just a bonus.

Our daughter loves Kinect for X-Box... if he doesn't have that he might like it. I haven't seen a kid yet who doesn't :)
