LOL Thought that would grab a few of you =O

Anyways, I just finished reading 50 Shades of Grey and have mixed thoughts on the book and am wondering what others thought! It's somewhat disturbing but at the same time so hard to put down! A few of my girlfrends are going absolutely crazy over it and calling me at least twice a day to see how far I am and to discuss! I'm only admitting this on here but a few of the items listed in 'the contract' I had never heard of - I still laugh when I think of my husband's facial expression when I asked him if he had ever heard of &****** or &***** - he looked at me and asked what I was reading! LOL

Thoughts?

What can I do next?

I recently finished 50 Shades and am now about 30% through 50 Shades Darker. I liked the first one a lot, but, frankly, got a bit tired of it all towards the end. It just got to be a bit much, even though I enjoyed it :)

The second book is already better - more focused on their relationship as equals and their struggles as a couple rather than all the sex.

I have highly recommended it to my friends! I hear they are making a movie, and can't image how with a rating under NC17.

I also don't see the correlation with Twilight, except a passionate affair between a "perfect" man and "regular" girl.

I'm in the middle of "Princess of Glass" by Jessica Day George, which is a sweet and innocuous little novel that I'm not willing to put down.

But I've downloaded "Fifty Shades of Grey" to my Kindle. Because I'm curious.

I read the reviews and they seem to be mixed as well! Much like the reviews for the "Twilight" books (which I don't care for), lots of people love it, and lots of people hate it.

We'll see...

ETA:

So here's my review:

I'm about 3/4 of the way through the book...and I have to say, I am not seeing "Twilight" here. AT ALL. The twilight books are annoyingly void of decent description. 50 Shades is rife with description. The only similarity thus far is the lack of description of the protagonist.

Like Twilight, that lack of description is for a reason; it allows nearly ANY young woman to imagine herself in Ana's position. Ana really is a non-person. She's Slightly-Above-Average Jane; the kind of person every gal imagines herself to be. Not all that special, with self-esteem issues, but some redeeming qualities.

As enjoyable as it is to read, this book is also a sad reminder of how willing women are to completely lose focus on their own lives when some hot rich guy comes along. Then it's all about "What's he thinking?! What's he doing? Why's he doing that?" And God forbid that she actually communicate honestly IN THE FIRST PLACE.

BUT...despite these annoyances about young women in general, I find myself enjoying the book. Enough so that I'll probably read the second one.

So, tell us...what did you think?

I haven't read it and don't plan to ... here's why. something like 80% of that book is twilight ... word for word. AND the whole thing started as twilight fan fiction.

I'm not a big fan of twilight ... and if I want erotica I'll go read author's who write their own stuff not rip off someone else's work.

Edited to add: H&H I can't find it now (of course when I need it) but the text of the book has been compared via computer to twilight and the comparison came back as like 80% (ish). So I'm not MAKING UP ANYTHING thank you very much.

And yes I know twilight was a young adult book. THE AUTHOR has said the books started as TWILIGHT FAN FICTION. the only thing they changed when they pulled it from the net was the NAMES. It was originally written AS EDWARD AND BELLA.

I saw an interview with the author the other day on Good Morning America or some show like that. I'll admit that I was talking on the phone at the same time, so I only caught bits and pieces of the interview. I thought it was just a run of the mill romance novel, and thought, oh, what the heck, I'll check it out. Downloaded the e-book. OMG!! Yeah, I'm no saint, but there is some stuff in there I had never heard of or imagined before. Yikes. I'm only about halfway through the book, but yeah, I'm torn between reading non-stop until I'm done, or stopping before my innocent little mind is corrupted! LOL I'd be afraid to tell my husband what I'm reading, lest he decide he wants to try some of this stuff! Hahaha...

ETA: Okay, I'm halfway through the second book now. My take on book #1 is that beyond the racy aspects of it, it is not all that well written. I am getting really tired of "Oh my." Who says that? (75 times a day?!) Also, some of the conversations seem stilted to me. For instance, when is the last time someone said, "How do you do?" instead of "How's it going?" or "How are you?" or "Nice to meet you." Things like that interrupt the flow of the book, in my opinion. The other thing that bothers me is that Ana is apparently no great shakes in the looks department, which is not believable. Christian is not only gorgeous, but he's a self-made billionaire (also slightly unbelievable, since he rarely seems to work, and is only 27??) - I can't imagine that he saw a klutzy, disheveled college student and thought, "I've got to have her!" I don't know.

Anyway, the second book seems better. More plot, some danger (crazy ex with a gun!), more interaction with other characters in the book, and Christian and Ana's relationship seems slightly more realistic. So, there's hope for this series yet.

My thoughts?
I read it. It was a quick easy read.

My opinion of it?
I was slightly disappointed. I mean C'mon, they only went into the 'Red Room of Pain' like 3 times?!

I will be reading the other 2 in the series b/c I feel the need to finish what I start....and for the record, I have read all the Twilight books and I don't see the '80%' comparison thing that one of the ladies said??

It is hard to find any *perfect* book...I was tired of all of Bella's whining in the Twilights books just like I was irritated with having to read "my inner goddess" a million and one times in 50 Shades....but I love to read and like to keep up with what the masses are talking about :)

I have seen several of you post about it as well as just heard it mentioned on the news. So I just added it to my Amazon cart and will order when I get $25 worth of items so I don't have to pay shipping. =) Guess I'll see what all the hubbub is about. =)

I'm interested in reading it but I'm not sure if they writing will be any good? I'm kind of a snobby reader... I'm just curious what is in it. Hubs and I are familiar with the darker side of the bedroom, if you get what I mean. So I'm really curious just how far and dirty the book goes! And if there's anything in it I actually haven't heard of.

I shoudl ask a separate question but i'm being lazy.

I"m just wondering if there is a compelling plot to this or is it just a string of hot and heavy experimentation?? I don't want to fall for all the hype if it isn't a good read. But i'm curious so at some point i probably will read it .

my best friend read it. Felt compelled to turn/angle her Kindle each time someone walked by. Was "horribly drawn in & simultaneously repelled by the S&M".....that's her current statement on the book. Couldn't put it down, bought the 2nd one....& is contemplating NOT reading the 3rd.

At this point, I am not going to read it.

I'm reading 50 shades of grey right now and find it a very fun read. More erotic than I'm used to, some of that is pretty crazy. But I also read all of the twilight books and honestly find ZERO correlation between shades of grey and the twilight books. None.

I just ordered it, based on all the discussion on here about it. I'm not sure when exactly I'm going to read it. Not at work. Not while the kids are awake. Not when my husband is home and I can have his attention. It would be ideal to read a few pages every night before bed so I can be at my best. :) But haven't figured out how to fit that in yet.
