Choosing an Elementary School

My daughter will be starting Kindergarten next year and I am looking into schools in our area. The schools that I am considering right now are Normandy, Westridge, Governor's Ranch and possibly Colorow. I was wondering if any Moms have kids attending these schools and what they do/don't like about them. Also, any additional information that you arewilling to share about the schools would be helpful. Thanks.

What can I do next?

You can check out great schools.com for some stats on the schools as well as parent ratings. I'd also visit the schools - you will get a feel for them and the fit for your child. We are a bit further west in Littleton, so we will be looking at Powderhorn or Bradley (KC Valley). Sorry I haven't heard much about those above, but check the website.

I'm not familiar with those schools, but have you looked at any of the charter schools? I have friends whose kids go to Littleton Academy and another one -- the name escapes me right now -- somehow connected to LA. My kids are at Sky View Academy and we love it. I don't know of anyone who's put there kids in any of these three that regret it. You have to act fast, though, if you want them. The lotteries are coming up soon. Last year, I put my son's name on the list without knowing about the school, and then did my research just so I could get in under the deadline. It was a great decision for us. It's a tough decision. Hope you get lots of good feedback.

Definitely, go to the kindergarten info night and if you can visit the classroom during the day. Also two pieces of info/advice:

1. Jeffco has great schools w/outstanding teachers, but South Jeffco schools are wonderful schools mostly due to the amazing parental involvement. So no matter where you go, as long as you're involved with your girls' learning, life will be good.

2. Jeffco is facing tough budgeting decsions that will affect the classroom (class size, teacher cuts, supply cuts, etc.) Please understand that schools will continue to open enroll students into their school, but I predict there will be few children accepted into these schools. There has to be a balance between the expected number of children and the ratio of class size to staff for the next school year.

Good luck with your family's education endeavors:)

Hi Z.- I'm a little biased because I went to Normandy 30 some years ago!! Just in random conversations with teachers etc where it's come up that I went there, I have been told that Normandy is really a fantastic school, with a superb reputation.

I don't know about the other three, other than if they are Jeffco schools they are probably decent or better. I second the other post who mentioned parent involvement. That helps any school! Good luck.

If you look at www.schoolview.org that can plot the schools out as far as growth and achievement. I like that website better than some of the other ones.
