So What Happened?

I am Babysitting. I have worked in a two daycares before. You do not need any schooling to take care of children, however I am CPR and firstaid certified. I supply the food, and I also teach the 4yr old. I teach signlanguae and basic pre k ie colors alphabet shapes and do all this in sugnlanguage as well. Taking care if children is an all day thing now if I was a teenager watching for a few hours I could understand not making so much but this is from 8-6 and I'm an adult with a child of my own who I don't need any training to take care of. I have worked with my child since before he was born and is in 1st grade with a 3rd grade reading level. Teaching children is easy, it helps when you know what your child is interested in and go from there.

A babysitter is an untrained person who takes care of a child occasionally. Not a trained professional care giver therefore should only make a few dollars per hour for babysitting.

Depends.

Occasionally or regular?

Teenager, college student, friend of the family, professional sitter, daycare provider, nanny, au pair?

How many kids? What ages? What bedtimes? What hours? Schlepping? (classes, school, etc.) Cooking? Special needs? Homework assistance? Other duties?

Does the sitter have children? Will the sitter be bringing them?

All of these things will change the price.

Bare bones basics in our area is $10 per hour for 1 child for an occasional teen/young adult babysitter with no other responsibilities.

Wow - reading the other responses makes me yearn for a raise!! I charge $20/day or $85/week for one. I serve lunch and 2 snacks (keep track for your taxes!) and I don't give breaks for days off (I tried that once but got taken advantage of). Of course, I only watch them up to 3/4 yo, then I encourage parents to put them in an 'official' pre-school so there is little doubt about their child's progress. My rates are low because I have to remain competitive. In our town there seem to be an excess of daycare providers.

In my area it's generally $8-10/hour, depending on how many children they are watching, whether it's a teenager or someone more qualified, etc.

In-home to the daycare provider means HER home. In-home to the parent often means nanny. Nannies- 9-11 per hour. MORE if the person comes alone (without her kids) and has many years experience. According to Sitter City, if I went to someone's home with 3+ children, with my years of experience, I should be getting 13-15 per hour.

In MY home.. $120 per week. I'm way over due for a raise. I won't give it to myself unless or until the gas prices get back in the 2-3 dollar range and stays there.

Weekly here, anywhere from $100-$175 a week for one child. Depends on the experience, if food is included, if they are doing any type of "preschool", etc. I live in the midwest, so prices here are much cheaper than you'll find in some of the other parts of the country.
