I have a 2year old and he has always had a hard stool. Even while I breast fed him. Now its getting to be so big to pass and the doc just says feed him apples with skins. Has anyone had this problem before? and if you did what did you do about it?

What can I do next?

Apple sauce and apple juice helps. If he's eating too much iron, then that could be part of the problem too. Iron will make you constipated, along with cheese and too many bananas.

Try orange slices, orange juice, fruit cups, prunes, prune juice.

Apples, pears or plums - natures constipation cure. I ate an apple every day during my pregnancy and never got constipated. I give my son applesauce when his poop gets real firm, and within two bowel movements it's back to normal.

If he doesn't like apples, or applesauce - I jazzed up my daily apple by coring it, putting it in a shallow bowl, putting a little butter inside the hole left by the core, and packed it with brown sugar... microwave for a minute at a time until it's soft and warm, and slice it up and serve warm - YUMMY!

Try giving pruns to your 2 year old, give him one or 2 eveyday or every other.

Probiotics might help. Doctors only recommend them for diareah, but I think constipation can be caused by some sort of imbalance in your intestines. So giving your son good bacteria (that he may be missing for whatever reason and causing his problems) could help him as well. Probiotics can be found naturally in yogurt, but you can also find them as a supplement for kids at health food stores. A popular type of probiotic is acedophilus (sp?).

I think at age 2 their little systems are still adjusting to table foods. My aunt used to tease me because I would give my daughter chicken nuggets with graduate green beans instead of french fries. I thought getting in as much veggies and fruit with every meal would be the key to stopping the constipation. We started out giving her Little Tummies but then I was afraid too much of a laxative wasn't good. So we switched to giving her apple & prune juice mixed. [Not Gerber, those little bottles were starting to cost the same as a 64oz bottle of Motts.] Afterwhile, she was normal. Oh, water...make sure he's getting some water throughout the day also. Another thing, fiber. I give my oldest daughter Fiberwise Bars. They are so good. When she asks for snacks, she reaches for these.

Our chiropractor said to give them coconut milk for constipation. You can find it in the oriental food section at the super market. We haven't had to use it, but he said that's what people in China give their kids.

Hi. I have 2 nieces with the same issue. My sister-in-law is a nurse and she gives her kids fruits that start with a "P" (peaches, prunes, pinapple) the juice is good too. The other thing she does is uses molasses in things. I'm not real sure how that works I know she's mixed it with peanut butter and she's mixed it with milk (which sounds gross to me but her kids like it) Well that's all I've got.. Good luck...

We had the same problem with our daughter when we switched to milk from formula. Try fruits with seeds ie: strawberriers, blueberries etc. stay away from bananas. Apple and prune juice are supposed to help. We also added small amounts of Benefiber to her juice which helped. As a last result we had to get a prescription for Miralax. Good luck, it should get better over time.

We had this problem with our now 3 year old daughter. She was constipated all the time because she loved her dairy products and bananas. Every time she seemed a little constipated I would make sure she drank a lot of water. I also would give her apples or plums. She would drink at least one glass of apple juice during the day. It would regulate her once again. I still have to be careful because she tends to get constipated really easily. And she still is a dairy lover. I never had to give her prune juice or an over the counter medication. The at home remedies worked great and tasted great as well :)

I still have this problem from time to time with my son. It's even been so bad I've found blood in his stools from it being so big, hard and difficult to pass. Grapes!!! Grapes work GREAT!!! Lots of grape juice, and chamomile tea help with the stomach pain. Don't give him/her any milk during constipation, and don't feed bananas either. They only make it worse. Lots of water, grape juice and grapes. Works for me!
