Hi Moms,
I read a request here a while back for information about labs. Many who responded suggested a certain chew toy. I could not remember what it was called and I was unable to find the request/responses. We have a two year old lab that is chewing up anything he can find. If anyone knows of the toy recommended or can make other recommendations I would be very grateful. Thank you so much!!

What can I do next?

Great suggestions so far. I would add that if you put peanut butter in the Kong toy, to put it in the freezer in a plastic bag. If the peanut butter is frozen, it lasts a lot longer!

Try Nylabones sold at Petsmart and Walmart. They were invaluable when my golden retriever nearly destroyed our home as a pup. She chewed for a few hours a day and our carpet, toys, and furniture were saved! Just be careful not to let your pup "overchew" due to tooth issues. Best of luck!

The Kong is the only toy my yellow lab has been unable to destroy. You can get it at Petsmart and they have several different sizes. We got ours the largest size. I hope that helps.

I saw the other reply about the boxer not liking the Kong. My boxer doens't really like it either! Okay, but you asked about a lab, I don't know about labs but my guy loves this toy from Dr Fosters and Smith called the everlasting treat ball. it is a rubber ball that you pop in refillable part that they lick or chew. We gave it to my dog on Christmas and he worked on it for 4 hours!

Hey E.:

Oh Boy does that take me back! We have an 8 year old lab and for the first few years I thought I'd go out of my mind. He chewed on everything! We bought stuffed toys and they'd be destroyed in minutes. We got rawhides, pigs ears, chews, Kongs filled with peanut butter, tennis balls, tug ropes you name it he had it. But Ed would chew through, eat and tear up everything in no time flat.

The one thing he wasn't able to completely ruin were Nylabones. You can get them in different flavors and your dog should be OK with that. (I hope.) Another thing that works well (to keep him busy and keep tartar off his teeth) is Dentley's compressed chews. We get the variety pack and Ed's never had to have that costly tooth cleaning procedure at the vet's. Gotta love that!

Good Luck.

all the chew toys recommended are great - one other thing that helps chewing beleive it or not is a long walk! I don't know if your walking your dog every day but I do dog rescue for large dogs and have 3 large dogs (two lab mixes) of my own- the walks really help keep them calm and relaxed around the house and significnatly reduces chewing -they still chew and need chew toys but the anxiousness and anxiety chewing goes away. Big pressed rawhide bones are great for chewing too. Good luck!

Our Boxer hated the Kong (I hear most dogs love it) so we settled for a new, clean children's bike tire.

She hauls this thing around in and out of her doggie door all day long and has yet to destroy it.

Just a thought...

I would suggest a rubber Kong toy. They're practically indestructible and they even make a tougher one for power chewers. There are several different types and most of them you can hide biscuits or stuff them with peanut butter to keep your dog interested.

We have a lab puppy- someone suggested nylabone for us- they are virtually indestructable, however, she's not very interested in them!
good luck
