Anybody know anyone thats had this surgery? My mom has 6bulging discs in her back & it was recommended that she have this surgery done or they say she can eventually become paralyzed if she doesnt. She has a lot of pain & numbness in her hand & arm as well. She's afraid of the surgery, but is also afraid NOT to have it done...

My mom had to have the surgery done over the summer for the same reasons. After 6 months of dedicated physical therapy, she is almost back to normal. It is a long/hard recovery, but worth it if the person is willing to really be dedicated to doing 1-2 hours of exercises daily.

Hi,
I have had several friends that have had surgery & only one that I know of went well......
I would suggest at the least.....GET A SECOND OPINON!!!
There are several new types of treatments that may not require surgery....
Good Luck & Happy Thanksgiving

Dear Ninenine,
I would definitely get a second or even third medical evaluation and opinion. I know people who had the surgery and were glad they did, but I also know people who had it and wish they'd never done it because they felt worse than before. One close family friend even became addicted to pain medication after his surgery. I'm not saying that to scare you, like I said, I know people who benefitted from the procedure. I think it depends on the extent of the problem and also making sure you have a really fabulous doctor who knows exactly what they're doing and explains things in a way you can understand so you can make an informed decision.

I really wish your mom the best!

While not being a fan of going under the knife unless it's the ONLY answer, I would look into it getting a second and even third opionion. Also, see if your mom might try some alternative things first such as physical therapy. Not sure if Reflexology or Acupuncuture would offer any temporary relief.
