There's a stray running around who likes to use my son's sandbox as a litter box, and it's getting old. We used to have a cover, but it fell apart quickly. We're planning on changing the sand out soon, but we want to know how to deter the cat(s) before we do that. I've heard that you can spray something (like tobasco mixed with different things or something like that???) Does anyone know of a safe something I can spray that will get rid of this cat? Thanks so much!

You can also call your local animal control and see if they can help you. In Stephenville, they will give out live animal traps and pick them up for you, and take the critters to the Humane Society. IF it is a wild animal they drive out and let it loose at the edge of town away from houses etc. If it is truly a feral can it is probably best that they pick it up. If it is someone's pet running loose they will help find the owners and give them a citation for not controlling their animal. I have been on the giving end and receiving end of the animal control officers. I don't know how effective the spray is, or red pepper. I have also heard Moth balls work. You can also try a sprinkler if you happen to see it coming over.

Red Pepper. As long as your son doesn't eat it or rub it in his eyes you could sprinkle red pepper over the sand. You have to do it every day, but it might deter the cat, along with the ammonia around the box, long enough to break the habit.
I'd do it at dusk... Red Pepper doesn't last that long and the cats are probably sneaking over there at night.
Ammonia. Spray ammonia around the perimeter of the sandbox. It smells like a predator's urine and that should deter it. Even once the obvious smell is gone, the cat will still be able to smell it and that should keep it away.
