Please go see an Endocronologist or maybe even a Reproductive Endocronologist. I am not sure which type would be best.- they both specialize in hormonal problems. It sounds like there is a homonal imbalance because what you are experiencing is not anywhere near normal.
Good luck and keep us all posted on your progress.
Take care,

K., I think you need a check up asap and also put a carbon monoxide monitor in your house. You may have a leak of some kind and that can make you very sleepy. Also, get the car you are driving checked to make sure there is not a leak of fumes or hole in your pipe. You may just be anemic but you have to find out what is wrong and I hope you have someone to watch the children so you can get checked out soon. Do your children sleep alot, too? Do you have a pet? Is it sleeping more than usual. God bless you and I hope you find out the problem soon.

K.,
I totally understand about the sleepy issue. I have always needed more sleep than other people. Actually, more than ALL other people that I know of. Ten hours straight just wasn't ever enough. I went to bed early most nights although it took me sometimes 2 hours to fall asleep. I would sleep late and within 3 hours, I wanted a nap and would nap for 3 or 4 hours.
I found out I had asthma and went to the pulmonologist. He saw me once and he scheduled me for a sleep study. This is where I went to the sleep clinic and spent the night there hooked up to some wires that measured my depth and length of sleep as well as my breathing. Long story short, I have obstructive sleep apnea. It affects millions of people without them knowing it. I was one of them.
I went back to the sleep lab and they did the test again but had me hooked up to a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine. Once I got my machine at home, I use it every night.
It has been 1 year since my diagnosis and I haven't slept so good in all my life. I dream very vivid dreams and wake up refreshed and ready to start the day. I have energy that I haven't had since grade school.
I sincerely hope that you will get a check up with a doctor who will listen to your concerns, check out the possibilities of possible apnea, and resolve your issue. You'll be so glad you asked about it.
Good luck. If you have any questions about it, I can help you get information if you need. Write back anytime.

Take a look at your diet. Are you drinking too much caffeine after 4 pm? Do you eat a lot of sugar and refined foods? All those things can affect how you feel. Too much caffeine and you stay awake and have to take a sleeping pill to go to sleep then are groggy from the affects of it and drink more caffeine to wake up then you can't go to sleep... it's a vicious circle. Sugar is also a HUGE toxin to your system. Find a really good health food store with food alternatives and get a sweetner called Xylitol - all natural, no after taste. They can also give you advice on how to eat healthy.

Hello there K.,

You know you may want to have a check up and make sure that you arent anemic. Low in iron. Because that is what it sounds like. I was anemic before years ago and I had the same problems with my sleep habits and at the time I didnt have any children. I now have 2 boys ages 2 & 3 and sometimes go to sleep late and wake up when they do around 7am and I have no problem with the rest of my day except and few yawns here and there. But I would definetly have my iron checked out if I were you because if you are low in iron then you can take suplements and get back to yourself in no time. Or hope that nothing more is wrong with you. Because being as tired as you are through out the day doesnt sound normal to me. Please check yourself out just incase.
Also you are not a bad mom at all. Just a normal stay at home mom who works her butt off just like we all do. It is normal too be a tired mom I have two boys the same age as your kids and I know how it is to be tired and not want to do anything all day. But your tiredness concerns me a bit so take a trip to your Doctor though just incase. Good luck. Julie

Hi K.,

I think that you should talk to your gynecologist or family practitioner about this. It certainly seems to me that you are showing signs of severe depression. Make an appointment and get your life back on track. If you need I have an awesome gynecologist who has helped me turn my life around. I was depressed and I'm now the person I always wanted to be to my child, my husband and myself. Best of luck to you,

M.

K.,

I had the same problem for years that didn't get properly diagnosed the first time. I was just miserably sleepy all day long, and never felt refreshed,... no matter how much sleep I got. It didn't start until I got into high school. Rather than referring me to a specialist,.... my family doctor told me that I just "need more sleep than other people". I suffered with it for 7 more years until a friend referred me to a pulmonary clinic, where I was diagnosed with a mild form of NARCOLEPSY. I never fall asleep while I'm talking or driving or anything.... like you see in the movies. I just simply have "Excessive Daytime Sleepiness". It's only ONE of the 4 possible symptoms of Narcolepsy, (thank goodness), but it's still considered to be a form of Narcolepsy,... so it's treated with medication. This changed my life! I'm so mad that I waited so long to go to the sleep disorder clinic! I rec'd my sleep study in the Pulmonary Clinic at University of Texas Health Center in Tyler, TX under Dr. James Stocks. Phone: 1-888-396-6802.
I recommend that you do a Google Search of "Narcolepsy symptoms" and see if any of the symptoms come close to describing your symptoms. If so,... you should find a sleep disorder clinic (like the one mentioned above) and schedule yourself an appt. to speak to the doctor. It just might change your life.

Three things to check into:

delayed sleep phase syndrome- http://www.sleepdisorderchannel.com/dsps/

add-
http://www.add.org/articles/TheLatestintheTreatmentofWome...

Add in women is very underdiagnosed...not saying you have it but it isn't all about hyperactivity...you can be at the other end of that spectrum which girls tend to be. (I was diagnosed recently)

Depression is the third suggestion I have.

Everyone has different coping mechanisms...take a look at your life and see if you can pinpoint what could be the issue if you don't feel it is medical. This could just be your way of dealing with stress.

Setting a schedule does help with your body trying to fall asleep. IF you read the article about the delayed sleep phase syndrome it gives you suggestions.

Hope this helps...feel free to drop me a note if you need an ear!

Kristina,
Well, I can see just by the fact that you're married to a marine (is he home, or away for long absences?) and that you have two very young kids, that you certainly have reason to be tired. During the first year of each of my kids' lives, I was completely exhausted - and I have an incredibly supportive husband who did half the work. So if you're raising the kids pretty much by yourself, like many military wives, then it's absolutely understandable that you're tired. Time will help, but of course, that's not what you need to hear right now. I'd say the second biggest help would be some down-time. Just for you. Excluding the kids. Yes, that's very hard to do, and requires asking for help from friends and family. But it's absolutely essential to being a good mom. You HAVE to have time to recharge your batteries, and you should NOT feel guilty about it. You can have mini-moments, like very long soaks in the tub with candles and a good book. Or walks by yourself, time at the gym, a massage or hair appt that lasts for a couple of hours. At best, maybe you could have an overnight. I did it one time when my kids were the ages of yours, and it was horrible and wonderful. Horrible, b/c I missed my family, but wonderful b/c...well, b/c I had a CHANCE to miss them. We need distance sometimes, and that really does give us energy. Even if you just need to take a night by yourself - go to a nearby hotel - and sleep until you can't sleep anymore. And one more thing. Exercise can NOT be over-stressed. It is so important. It helps you sleep better, helps you have energy during the day, and helps you with endurance, stress, and mood swings. Try to exercise at least 15 minutes a day - just jog in place, or around the house, up & down stairs, etc. Just enough to get that heart rate up. Maybe get some light weights and do some reps on your arms, some squats for your legs several times a week. You'll be amazed at how everything improves - including your self-esteem. Good luck, and remember that taking care of yourself is also the best way to take care of your kids.

Sincerely,
M. B

My advice would be to see a sleep specialist. My husband did this because he had a similar issue. You spend the night at the clinic and they videotape you sleeping and hook you up to all sorts of monitors. Then the doctor sits down with you and you work out a plan. Hopefully your insurance will cover it.

Best of luck,
S.

You should try taking vitamin B complex. I used to sleep alot also, and once I tried this vitamin I am not tired at all and never consider oversleeping. It also helps me feel energized. Let me know if it helps. It definitely helped me.
