So What Happened?

Thanks for all the information, I bought this stuff called Kanka at Safeway and it worked like a charm. The canker sore is gone and he is happy again.

I would suggest the baby orajel. The "baby" formulas don't have the burning sensation that the adult formulas have. I've used it with great success. Rinsing with warm salt water is a great idea as is staying away from acidic foods - OJ, ketchup, tomatoes, etc. There's also a product called Orabase (which has lidocaine in it) and that's a thick paste that's good for night time use and/or people with braces. Good luck I know these can be so painful!

Anbesol will help for immediate relief. Rinse 2x a day with a warm salt wash (just add salt to a glass of warm water and swish around). This is not painful and will cause the sore to heal faster.

Baby orajel works great - esp just before meals. And you can get cherry or grape flavor. I recently read about a new product that is like a band-aid for canker sores, but haven't used it yet. Might want to check for it.... It helps prevent more trauma. Good luck!

There's an over the counter medicine that you drop on the site, it's called Kanka. My husband has chronic canker sores and uses it. I also like Zilactin. It not only relieves the pain but creates a type of bandaid over the spot.

There are many many home remedies most that work well and all based on a similar principle: that bacteria in the mouth need to be reduced. The simplest and very effective are merely swishing the mouth with salt water 3-4X per day or peroxide if you ae sure to spit it out. Easier, and as my mother did and we continue with our children: swab the sores with a q-tip dipped in a cap of hydrogen peroxide. At 8 years old your son can be shown how to do this and should do it himself as often as possible for 1-2 days and the sores will be gone. Determining if trigger foods (e.g. citrus, strawberries, certain nuts)or medications have caused this or a vitamin deficiency (e.g. B12, folate) are good practices too.

I saw on the show Doctors that there is treatment you can get thru your dentist I beleive it was. They rub on this medicine that makes it disappear in like 24hrs. Of course you will probably have a heck of a time finding a dentist in the area that has it, but you could call around.
meantime maybe gargle w/ warm salt water a couple times a day. drink lots of fluids. and avoid spicy food and touching/irritating it. Thats all I can think of.

Listerine will cure it quickly. If he is too young to swish something that tastes so strongly, you can dab it on with a q-tip.
