Try to get a baby's soothing music cd to play. Also get some glow in the dark stars and put them on the ceiling. He can gaze at the stars while listening to soothing music. This has helped me in the past. Good luck.
My son falls asleep each night watching his mobile and listening to the music. He will by 5 months old in a couple of weeks and his mobile will need to come down. I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for an item I can use in place of the mobile. I have bought two aquariums and neither one fit on his crib due to the decorative style of the crib.
Please let me know your thoughts so my little pumpkin can continue to fall asleep. Thanks!
Thanks for all the advice. I am going to get some music and explore the options of wall mount mobiles and the pooh starlight projector and see what makes the most sense. Thanks Everyone!

I guess I don't understand why the mobile has to come down at 5 months...even if he's batting at it, it should be fine to keep it up. I have a Fisher Price fish that attached to the side of the crib with ties that can double as a floor toy. It has three things to pull on, lights, and a mirror and plays music. That could be a possibility if you are really concerned about leaving the mobile up.
you could hang a picture or a few pictures from the ceiling or tack some colorful art onto the ceiling depending on how high your ceilings are (if he'll be able to see them) and put a radio with a soothing cd on in his room.
Why does his mobile need to come down? I used mine until he could pull on it. Also, i'll be there's a way to rig an aquarium to go on the crib, even if it doesn't fit on the way it's designed to.

Why not just keep the mobile up? Until he can actually pull himself up in his crib and reach it, there's no risk of it harming him. By that stage he may be over it. My son really enjoyed his moblie too but by the time I decided to remove it, he didn't seem to notice it wasn't there...
There's not really a good reason to take a mobile down if he's not pulling on it yet. My son loved his mobile and never pulled on it so we just kept it up until he grew bored with it (about the same time he moved to a toddler bed). You just have to be the judge for yourself when it is the right time to take down your son's mobile.
One thing I've learned is that a mom really does know her child better than anyone else. All the "rules" and advice are great, but you have to make judgement calls based on your knowledge and understanding of your child. We used to have a great pediatrician in Massachusetts who would tell me "I can tell you what the statistics say and what the experts say, but I can't tell you what's right for your child, only a mom knows that."
There are a few mobiles that are able to mount on the wall. This way your son can still have a mobile but you can place it high enough that it wont cause any problems. Here's an example... http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2266803
Hope that helps!
My daughter for years insisted on having the music part of the mobile. I took the mobile down and cranked the sound part laying it on the dresser and she would fall asleep listening to the music. Sometimes I had to crank it a couple times.
just wondering why are you taking it down im not sure i understand why you are taking it away
Try putting a CD player in his room, and play a CD of "white noise" (ocean sounds, wind, etc.). Target has several of these CDs over by their greeting cards. CD clock radios are fairly inexpensive and small...and they usually have a "sleep" feature that will automatically shut-off the music after an hour or so.
An even simpler idea is to run a fan or humidifier in his room...something that makes a humming noise.
Hope this helps!
Someone recommended this Pooh starlight projector to me and it has great reviews! I never got around to buying it, but it seems like the perfect solution for you:

Our son loves the Fisher Price Rainforest. When we put him int he crib, he rolls right over nd looks for it He can also turn it on by himself with his foot in the middle of hte night and fall back to sleep.
I'm curious as to why at 5 mths the mobile has to come down. My sons mobile stayed up until he was over a year, only because then he started messing trying to pull it off that we took it out. If he enjoys it, then I say leave it. As they say if it aint broke don't fix it.
Although he won't be able to watch it, you might try putting a CD player in his room. Both of my girls (ages 3-1/2 and 17 months) go to bed with their music on. We also have an in-the-crib music box - probably similar to your aquariums that don't fit - and that's been a huge hit with both of them as older infants/young toddlers. Also, we still have the mobile in my 17-month-olds crib ... she can barely reach it and doesn't seem to mess with it, so we made the decision to leave it in there for a bit longer.
Why will the mobile have to come down? If it is working for him LEAVE IT THERE!! Don't take it down just bc he is 5 months old. I have a 6 month old and he loves his aquarium to watch and listen to. Maybe get one of those sound machines or one of those lamps that play music and also go around and give off the shadows so he can look at something around the room. hope that helps! Remeber if it is working for you, you don't have to stop it at any certain age just because it is recommended!! Your the mom.
Well if the crib toys won't work with your crib i'm not to sure, they do make table lamps that have parts that spin and cast colorful shadows on the walls and most of them play music, no idea where you would find them though. i like the idea of keeping the mobile but fixing it to the wall or ceiling so it's not within reach as well, obviously he likes it and is used to that imparticular i think it's a great idea if you can find a way to keep it.
Any chance you can simply hang his mobile higher, so it's not in his reach? I wouldn't remove it completely, especially if he's fond of it! I'd just want to know why they say to remove it, and then take whatever precaution necessary to relocate the mobile safely (like figure out how to hang it from ceiling instead of clipping it to his crib, for example). Don't know if that helps at all... just one idea!
I guess I'm not sure why he can't use the mobile anymore, unless he's pulling it down. My son is 9 months old, and we still occasionally use it - he learned how to make it turn on from the "sleep" mode, which is actually kinda nice. We also bought a cheap cd player and play music that way for him and nap & bedtime. It's pretty relaxing music, piano instrumentals, but probably whatever is fine. I have a friend who's daughter falls asleep to metallica so.....
There are little lamps that you can purchase that you can set on his dresser. They light up and project an image onto the ceiling.
Could you find a chair and attach it too the back and put it near his crib so he could still watch and listen to it? It might be hard to find a chair with the right kind of back though.
