Looking for a basic camera for a decent price. Probably a SLR. My kids are busy in sports so I will also need a zoom to 200 or 300. I have the Canon XTI but it is old and I feel like it isn't doing what I need. I would love to get a camera to get great pictures on the baseball field. I did see the Nikon 3000D on Sale at Sams for a great price.

What can I do next?

I am a Nikon user, personally. They are both good brands, but I just never loved Canon. You have to remember, that it's the lens that is important. Your camera body, should be good, but you need the correct lens. For sports, you want a wide aperture. (Low number.) The lens that comes with the kit, probably only goes as low as 3.5. You want to be able to go lower. You need a fast shutter speed, which works with a wide aperture. The lens that comes with, is probably 18-55, or 18-90mm. That will be acceptable, if you will be close to the action. If you are a bit further away, you might get a 200mm lens. In fact, I don't like using less then a 200mm + lens for sports photography. However, you might not see that necessary, since you are taking photographs for your own pleasure. They can get quite pricey, depending.

I have a Nikon 5100. LOVE IT. The pictures I get are amazing (in my view) and not because I'm a fabulous photographer...I'm just a mom with a good camera :).

I have an 18-55mm lens, a 55-200mm lens, and a 55-300mm lens. The lens to 300mm was the BEST purchase ever. I get the most amazing shots with that. The extra 100mm makes a big difference.

I am a Nikon user but its kinda like Mac v windows comouters..its all in what you are used to. I will say Nikon has better lens overall and I'm not sure about cannon but I can use every lens I have from my old film camera to the newer ones for the digital on my digital so if you have older lenses. I also have a Leica that was my fathers and by far it is the best camera I own but its film and well not many of us can afford digital leicas. But I have a little point and shoot Panasonic that has a leica lens and it takes fantastic photos even the actionn shots so if you don't want the bulk you may want to look into something lime that. My suggestion is to test the cameras out. If you have a camera store in your local mall go there ask them to put a card in and you shoot some pics, play with the settings and try different brands and ease of changing the lens'. Some people like the grips on cannon more then nikon. Once you have test driven the options then head to Sam's or costco but please try them before ya buy its an investment you don't want to regret!

Canon and Nikon are both good cameras and either should do what you need. Look at the camera/lens package with the lens you want most when you compare prices - no good getting a good price but not the lens you want. I just got a new Nikon after years of a Canon Rebel and like the Nikon better - but the Canon was old so that's probably not a fair comparison.

I have a Nikon D60 that is six years old. Love it. Takes great photos. Just this past Friday, I took 150 shots of my granddaughter. All came out great.
Would love a 3000d but too expensive for me.

My husband has the Cannon Rebel 3 and my brother has a fancy Nikon that is a little bit better I think. They BOTH swear that theirs is the BEST one. So, it really is what you prefer. They trade/share lens so that is not an issue at all. I know that you can rent lenses at a local shop downtown here, may be you could find one that will let you rent the cameras for a day. Or, buy a used one and if you don't like it then sell it and try the other one. Or sell it and buy a new one if that is what you want to. Good luck and have fun!

Both brands are good cameras. We have a Nikon 3000D and we absolutely love it. The picture quality is great. No more blurry sports pictures too. We bought another lense to go with it and haven't regretted the purchase at all.
