Call to 911 - My DD Is a Hero!

what a morning we had!

Our bathroom doorknob was acting funny, but I didn't realize it was broken until I shut the door while I was inside the bathroom this morning and IT WOULDN'T OPEN again! I was stuck in the bathroom!!!! and my 6 month old was sleeping on MY bed in the next room! I had safety rails up on each side of the bed, but still, she moves around a lot and if she woke up could find a way to fall off the bed. Hubby had left for work. My 4 year old DD is in her room.

SO.... I unscrewed the doorknob with my TWEEZERS (!).

but even taking it totally off it didn't help, the thing was broken and nothing could pull the closer tab out of the hole.

My 4 year old DD woke up and I had her go get my phone. but it was double locked (so she couldnt get ahold of it and call 911 like she did a couple years ago). so I had her get Joels 'extra' phone, but she couldn't enter the right password to unlock it. After many, many tries I realized she couldnt unlock the phone.

this has been like 25 minutes and the baby is waking up now. DD keeps going to check on her.

so I showed her which buttons to push to make an 'emergency call' (the side button on a blackberry, then is asks if you want to make an emergency call and you have hit the button, THEN it asks if you are SURE you want to make an emergency call and she had to scroll up to yes and hit the button) and the phone dials 911!

and then she put it on speaker (!) and I told the sherrifs office the situation and they sent a cop out (DD unlocked the doors and let him in) and he worked on it for 20 mins or so with a screwdriver and finally got the tab out and the door opened. (right before he was going to kick in the door).

SO he waited for me in the living room while I got my ROBE, and the baby. and then he got the info he needed for his report and gave my DD a sticker and left.

NOW I know why one of the options is "Emergency" (or unlock or cancel) on a blackberry!

Has anything like this ever happened to you?

What can I do next?

What a trooper! Never had this happen before, but my best friends husband is a Highway Patrol man and has taken calls like this before.

My husband (12 at the time) was watching his brother (3 at the time) while his mom ran a quick errand. His brother got angry because my husband wouldn't let him play with a truck. So his brother called 911. My husband found him and asked him who he was talking to and his brother says, "Officer Jones and I told him you won't let me play with my truck." Yikes.

Nothing like this has happened to me... BUT...

KUDOS to your 4YO for getting the phone and dialing 911... and...
KUDOS to YOU for being able to take off the door knob with tweezers and talk your 4YO through it all!

Great job to you both!

I'm always the one calling 911 ;)

When my baby brother was about 4, my other brother (around 9) was practicing his gold swing in the front yard. Baby brother walked right into the golf club while it was going full swing. My dad used to be a medic in the military, but because it was his own child, he froze. I called 911 while putting pressure on the side of my brother's face (the club went THROUGH his cheek; he was poking his tongue through the hole to my hand!)... Paramedics came, parents went with him.

Then I was like, where's my other brother?! I found him curled up in the fetal position in shock in the front yard. Dragged him upstairs, threw him in a cold shower to try to snap him out of it, called 911 AGAIN, and he ended up on an ambulance that day as well. I was 11 years old.

I think about scenarios quite a bit as it is only my daughter and I and I fear that she would be so afraid she may freeze. I second and third all those that you kept calm and made it possible for your daughter to be a hero. Love hearing stories like this!!!

Rachel D - OMG what a story! Yikes!

AK - good job to your daughter! What a responsible and smart little girl you have there!

Last January (my DD was 2) I had just started a nice cozy fire in the living room fireplace, and I said to her 'lets run to the garage & get some more wood for the fire', she took my hand and we walked to the door that leads into the garage (the garage is attached to the house). I open the door and step into the garage to grab another piece of firewood, and my DD slams the door shut with a giggle. I am in the garage, and she is in the house and the door LOCKED when she slammed it shut. I freak because there is a fire roaring in the fireplace and my daughter is in the house alone. I am picturing her sticking her arm in the fire to touch it or something horrible like that. I am screaming her name, begging her to unlock the door. She disappears into the living room. I run over to the neighbors house (in my bare feet in the snow) and ask my neighbor to call 911. Then I run back over and try one more time to ask my daughter to unlock the door and let me in, and sure enough she strolls over and unlocks the door and lets me back in. All was fine, she never played with the fire, but that was the last time I ever lit a fire when I was home alone with her!
