I am thinking about taking a cake decorating class at Michael's craft store. Our local store has basic/beginner classes available once a week for a month. Has anyone taken this class before and if so did you enjoy it? Did you learn the basics? Would you recommend it to someone?

Thanks!!

I took a cake decorating class at a craft store AGES ago and really enjoyed it. It's a bit of work, as you have to make your own frosting, and if you don't have someone to give the cakes to, or some people to eat them, you're going to be overrun with cake. My co-workers were very happy with me when I was taking the class LOL! It was fun :) Definitely take it if you like that kind of thing. You do have to buy some tools, so I'd ask them for a list of supplies you have to buy and price them out. Then decide if you want to go ahead.

It's a lot of fun to do. You get out of the house and have a good time learning the basics.

But there is a big cake world out there that doesn't include Wilton so don't go crazy buying Wilton products. Most of them aren't very good. I highly, highly recommend looking into getting Americolors gel colors to color your buttercream with. And Satin Ice fondant is great to work with if you get to that point. Also, look into buying Fat Daddio's or Magic Line cake pans. The Wilton pans are pretty flimsy. Using quality pans like the 2 I mentioned will give you better results.

I've been decorating since 2000 and enjoy it. I took what was the equivalent of the first 3 classes and have learned the rest on-line or with a DVD series that I adore:

Sharon is an awesome instructor. Her fondant dvd made a huge difference for me after watching it just once. I had fondant experience but her tips and tricks put my work to another level.

Another biggie-invest in an oven thermometer-less than $5! Very important to make sure your oven is running at the right temp!

Have fun!

My friend did Joanns. She loved it. But there is a lot of cost involved to buy your stuff.....so hopefully Michaels will supply more. She had to bring her cakes in and use tools and such. It got costly. But she learned a lot in just 4 weeks ( 1 time a week ) and loved it.

I took the Wilton class and had a blast. I had zero experience with cake decorating, and l learned a lot about the basics. I even made my daughter's first birthday cake after that class. :) It does take some time outside of the class though since you have to make the cakes and the frosting. I was totally unprepared for that part of the class. Hope you have fun!

Yes, it was absolutely fun. I made my teen take it with me. We did all classes and later took additional classes at a real bakery. It was very costly for all the supplies. Each class was $30, but supplies overall ran us probably up to $500 in all and we shared. Plus, we did not use the wilton colors due to they are weird tastes we bought our icing colors and later fondant from a real cake bakery due to wilton's taste odd. All my icing we made we used real butter mixed with a little crisco to not have that oily taste and the instructor loved how my icing and cakes tasted. Overall, was a fun bunch of classes to get basics, but the real bakery helped us with additional techniques. I also bought all my cake pans at the bakery not michaels due to theirs are light flimsy etc. I prefered professional grade products due to I always do a lot of baking even before the michaels class. Take the classes its fun.

I took the beginning cake decorating class there before I was married. I loved it! I've since made my son's Birthday cakes every year. It is really fun!
