Gardensalive.com has a product called sting free its an alternative to deet products. I have found it to work VERY WELL for me in my backyard and at the Morton Arboretum.
I have a 14 month old. Is it ok to use bug spray on him since there are so many mosquitos out? If so, what kind is reccomended??

My Doc. said it was OK to use the Deet on my little one, but be aware that it is a neurotoxin. I guess you have to do your research these days and weigh your options...neurotoxin or west nile...you know what I mean? I used the California Baby bug repellant on my daughter this year and she really is bug bite free. It is made with citronella.(I had to stay away from the Deet because I am preg.) We were in the yard the other day and my friends little girl got 8 bites in about 10 minutes and my daughter didn't get any - she was wearing the California Baby. They were both sitting on the same blanket. You can get the CB at Whole Foods. I know Target carries tha brand, but I am not sure if they have the bug repellant.
If you're looking for something that works and is DEET free. I have used Burt's Bee's Bug spray for years on my kids. I also use it on my dogs too.
I swear it works! It really does keep the skeeters away. It's an oil type of application, and very easy to use.

The mosquitos are AWFUL this year. I have never seen it this bad!!
You have to be really careful with bug spray. I refuse to use any of the store bought stuff. They say it *might* be safe and then all the reports come out about DEET.
We use Shaklee's Basic H2. It is non-toxic and environmentally friendly. I have no fears about applying it to my children's skin. It works great. Since you are pregnant, you need to be really careful too. Shaklee is 100% safe. Let me know if you'd like more info.

I agree that the mosquitos are awful this year. We've been using a lotion by California Baby and it has been working so far. It is all natural and DEET free. I like it because it is a lotion so it makes it easier to put on my little one and my older daughter can put it on herself. I don't have to worry about anything getting sprayed in their eyes.
I just heard on the news the other morning that if you are using bug spray on young children you should use one with 25% deet. With the west nile virus in the nasty little bugs the deet is they way to go. But it is dangerous. Avon has that skni so soft stuff that is suppose to work. They also have a deet free. I hear ya about how bad these mosquitos are, my son is in football and I have been spraying him with that cmaping type, his legs are covered in them .
Good Luck!
Hello,
we use natrapel plus insect repellent. it came highly recommened from one of the baby magazines. so far so good.
My pediatrician said bug spray is fine, but you can not use Deet on them. It is hard to find bug spray without it, but the online site One Step Ahead has it. Also I found bug spray at Walgreens with Picodin instead of Deet. Hope that helps!
I would recommend you keep your child inside - most of the sprays on the market contain chemicals in them which are not good for "ANY" of us to be using --remember anything put on the skin can be absorbed into the blood stream. I highly recommend using Natural products -- I have a home business with a company called Melaleuca -- I was amazed--I combined a few of our natural products in a spray bottle and "tested" it -- the mosquitos flew over to me and NEVER landed-- I also sprayed it on one to see what it did and it died instantly. Its nice because its not sticky - it doesnt smell like a repellent. My 18 y.o. son used to make fun of me - BUT now he asks me where it is :) If your interested in switching to safer - healthier products in your home --please visit my profile. I think you will be amazed at the things our Natural products can do :)
My one yr old just had her appointment last week. I had just happen to ask him. He said if it doesn't have Deet in it it's like putting water on them! No use in keeping the bugs away. Being a pediatrician from the Childrens Hospital in Miwaukee, I trust him. After all, when we were kids my parents used Deep woods off on us! We're all fine! Just don't ever spray in on them!! Spray it on your hands then rub it into them. Avoid hands and face to. As I am sure you know! LOL I've used Off on all of my kids too!
FYI-In our area though, it's so bad we just stay inside right now! There's bug spraying truck that goes through the neighborhood fogging and mosquitos are still bad! Nasty year for them!!! good luck!

Mom to four children!
I agree: no deet, can cause neorological damage. I bought one at Walgreens with Picodin instead of Deet. You have to put on more frequently. I read somethign comparing bug sprays thta included skin so soft, it said for that you have to spray it every 10-15 min to work. ug.
We only use all natural products. We make our own "bug spray" with natural oils because we don't want to use any chemicals. I know a lot of doctors say it's ok but I don't use it.
Skin So Soft lotion seems to have some repellent properties. Also I found this stuff called Family Care that does not have deet and is the only bug spray I've found that doesn't say "do not use on children under 3."
my advice--keep the baby in when bugs are out. Anything on baby will get on his hands and we all know hands go in mouth. this came from my pediatrician--
JB you can use bugspray, but it cannot contain more than 20% deet. I think it is 20%. I use the kids bugspray I think it has 7% deet. I tried the all natural stuff. It just did not work. Hope it helps.
