Bruses??

My son is 5 months old now and I have been bf'ing. He recently decided that he is too nosy to bf any more outside of during the night and first thing in the morning. I have stopped my prenatal pills as well. Now the last week or so I keep waking up to new bruses on my legs (and I don't bruse easy). Where are these coming from? I keep telling my hubby to stop kicking meat night, but since he is sick and sleeping in the recliner I know it isn't him. Am I low on iron? Is my son bf'ing taking some thing out of me?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So far it sounds like I am right with the low iron. Usually to check this I go donate blood. I found this to be the cheapest way to check my iron levels. It helps me out and it helps out someone else if I can give blood. It is a hit and miss for me and iron.

Yes, eat more iron-enriched foods. If you stopped takin prenatals, thats part of the problem. Prenatals usually give you more iron than normal vitamins. Start taking those again. Also, eat more spinich, and iron-enriching foods. Hope you feel better!

I am 19 yrs past BF but I too occasionally wake up with bruises on my thighs. My doctor told me that I've been bumping myself inadvertently (yeah, right!) but in my research I've found that there are many things that can cause bruising including vitamin deficiency. See http://firstaid.webmd.com/tc/bruises-and-blood-spots-unde.... I started back on vitamins B and C and haven't seen any recently..

if you are going to continue breast feeding you have to continue the pills the bruises are most likely iron.

Sounds like low iron to me. I bruise easily when I am low on iron. If you want to continue bf-ing during the day, make sure it's quiet when you are nursing so your son doesn't have any distractions and want to look around.

It could just be the fact that you stopped the vitamin. I would try adding it back or at least some type of vitamin. I was sick last week and couldn't stomach the prenatals. I haven't started back on them yet, and noticed bruises all over my arms...Guess I better start again too.

please get this checked out. This happened to me when my son was 4 months old and I ended up with acute leukemia and was very close to dying. I wouldn't just check your iron levels, I would have a CBC, check for white cells, red cells and platelet levels. It is a very common test, so shouldn't be too expensive and you never know. Sorry to freak you out, but I kept trying to chalk it up to low-iron and the baby carrier hitting my legs............

I Bf'd and pumped for over a year and I didn't take pretals (they made me sick) the entire time. I am one that bruises some what easliy, and I might occasionally wake up with a bruise but I wouldn't neccessarily say its because you stopped the vitamans. worst comes to worst call your doctor he might want to see you or he may have a different answer. as long as you are eating healthy and taking care of your self my doc said i didn't need to take the vitamens. ps I didn't take them during pregnancy either (first 2 months maybe (not recommened) I took pills) my son was a healthy weight, no birth defects or mental/medical problems of any kind even now he is doing great.
