Broken Thumb??

My daughter (4) had a small TV fall on her hand last night. Her thumb and palm area right below her thumb are quite swollen. There is no bruising and I can not really tell how much range of motion she has because she gets nervous and cries anytime I try and look at it. Here are the questions, is there anyway to tell if it is broken at home? How long should I wait to take her to the doctor? should I give Ibuprofen and ice in the mean time? Thanks

What can I do next?

I would take her to the doc's childrens bones are very small and growing. Children don't bruise when something is broken. Keep us updated....

Don't skimp on health and safety. When in doubt, go to the Dr or Doc in a Box to have it checked. IMO, there is no waiting to see what happens if I think my child is sick or injured.

You don't know what you don't know.... Her thumb may have nerve damage, etc and the sooner it is checked, hopefully the damage can be fixed without longterm issues.

Hopefully it is just a bad bruise. Good luck.

I would have already had her to the emergency room. Why wait? No you can't tell at home if it's broken unless you have an x-ray machine. My daughter fell off of a chair she was standing on at age 6 and broke her thumb. There are growth plates in their bones at this age and you don't want to wait on this because it could affect the growth of her bone if it is broken. If it's not broken, at least you will know for sure once they x-ray it. Please take your daughter to the doctor now.

Our thumbs are critically important in using our hands effectively. The swelling indicates a real possibility of serious injury to bone, tendon or blood vessels. Please get her to a doctor ASAP.

When broken it hurts like the dickens without even touching it, and touching it will make her scream. Since she won't let you touch, I would say ice and ibuprofin and then off to see the doctor. If this were me I would call the Sunday doctor on call at my pediatrician's office and ask for their opinion. Perhaps see the doc tomorrow AM if you cannot get to see one today. Since it is not life threatening I myself would not go to an emergency room where you will likely have to wait for many hours before you get help (and unless admitted the insurance co-pays are usually very high) unless the doctor on call advised it. Good luck.

I'm going to chime in and agree with everyone that you do need to take her to the emergency room and have it x-rayed. Personally I would go the extra miles to Children's Hospital because kids are their specialty and if it needs set you want it set right. You do not want someone who specializes in adults setting your child's broken bone.

I hope it is not broken!

Take her to the emergency room. My sons arm swelled after he stood up and fell out of the shopping cart. He broke his arm and was in a cast for six weeks. Give her ibuprophen and ice the area. If she is in pain and it is swollen I would not wait.

Yes give her some ibuprofen and ice, but she needs to have an xray. It seems since she cries there is something going on and it should be looked at. Things are a lot easier to correct when they are fresh than later when they are healed.

First of all, I hope that your daughter is feeling better and I'm glad that this "accident" caused no more than a bruised thumb. Icing is a good idea and ibuprophen for pain (Please check the CPSC recall list). If she is nervous about your checking her thumb, it's probably painful. If in doubt, call her doctor.
Separately, as a safety professional, I get very angry when I hear about an event like this. I am also glad that you shared this. Your family was lucky! It becomes an opportunity to impress upon moms, dads, grandparents and ALL caregivers the serious need for securing tv's, computers, appliances, and furniture to ensure the safety of your child. If a baby can pull up by holding on to, a child have reaching access to an object like a small appliance, any child...any age..PLEASE use one of the MANY anti tip products available.
